My Casio PDA had a large AOL setup program built into the ROM. Even in the unlikely event that i would have needed it i would only have ever used it once! Bloody idiots wasted all that space instead of including some useful software.
Actually Forgent doesn't own JPEG it owns (according to the last Slashdot article) run-length encoding which is used in many more things than JPEG including fax compression. To say RLE is what makes JPEG would be misleading, to sue people for it would be to sue CD manufactures because you came up with the idea of making the disk a circle shape. Now what RLE is, is basically counting the number of repeating symbols, in a line, in a data stream, and replacing that sequence with a special symbol that basically says "there are 352 X's here" or "352X" etc. That basically means Forgent is not only a pile of shit, they are 352shit. Looking at the DCT algorithm in JPEG it is a masterful weave of mathematical genius as beautiful as the scantily glad Victorias secret models it purveys to millions around the world and had Forgents team of dedicated masters spent years perfecting this and had they bled their souls and bodies daily into the project i might find it in me to see an ounce of respect and maybe they would deserve some royalties from those who would use the algorithm for solely commercial gain. but they don't and they didn't. They bought RLE and now they want to milk the world for a 'technology' even a judge could understand!
At first i thought it said that they were asking kids to grass up their friends and name the kid in the class who was burning the most cds, of course any kids worth their salt would immediately point to the principle and governors just to spite them for letting all these freaks into the schools! The BSA is just gonna have to learn the hard way that comming into schools, doing a little talk and handing out free ferrets is never going to pursuade kids not to do something! what you think they are going to say "oh, well i really wanted doom 3 but you know, i guess ill just have to save up for it, darn what a pickle."
Its not a good feature, its a vital feature and anyone not implementing it is partly responsible every time a virus comes out that exploits it, its just the most basic common sense.
Of course all fingers will be pointing at the authors, and even though they are assholes, the real problem is not in this 'virus' its in the the phone or the OS - it simply should not be letting add-on software have access to the sms functions! its just like the whole outlook crap. Lets say you give your plane passengers a network they can plug their laptops into to use the net, you dont then connect that network to the planes' own bloody computers and let anyone have access to the "flying the plane" functionaliy, its just stupid and if you did that and someone plugged in their laptop and said "hey look at this, i think ill fly this plane and crash it" as much of an asshole as they are it would still be your fault. This sort of stupidity has to stop - sue the people responsible.
Google has for many the only respected advertising model on the internet. In my entire life i have only ever clicked on google ads. They're pretty noticable too especially when you start talkin crazy ass hoe y'all in some gmail and the suggested ad comes up as poof daddy. Google is also the most visited site in the world - thats gotta be worth something? Did i mention they sell page ranks? Also gmail is gonna take off in a big way, people are going to get sick of hotmail, its slow, clunky, and has a poor interface and no space - with millions of people already just begging for a gmail account hey are gonna need shit loads of storage space - they're gonna have to make that pay off somehow? google are building a little empire to take over the internet service by service, and we love it!
They're targetting the corporate PHBs who for whatever reason hate linux, they then tell their admins what to use. Also sometimes a Windows admin will need a *nix system on their network for something... 8/10 Microsoft users prefer SCO for a health admin and a shiny coat
Thats the problem with these sherifs, they're mostly redneck hill-billys who have no idea what a human right is! "y'all best be-have your'selves or i'll be givin u both barrels from ol betsy here. hey jimmy, you got that there e-lectric chair ready for fryin us some prision dawwg?"
You guys really need a data protection act. Those grocery cards companies have to keep your data private and tell you exactly what they have on you whenever you ask, why, and how they process it - same with the car.
Actually thats a good point, why is skipping adverts on TV 'not to be allowed' while ad skipping on the net is fine? Frankly i say fuck em both, when its my screen in my house, im afraid i have the last say about what goes on it - anyway, wtf are they gonna do about it? break down my door and demand i watch the adverts?
Just look at the DMCA - its spreading all over the world. Of course theres no way to stop file sharing, what-ever governments do to try, people will always be one step ahead ready to come up with an even less stopable system, but that wont stop governments trying, its in their best interests to do what the US wants or else, and its not like any country in the world actually has a proper democratic system where the government has to answer to everyone else so they've got nothing to loose.
Anyone has been able to pick up a card reader cheaply for years, most office supply places sell them and that monster-battle toy had one. Or if you cant find one in a skip you could probably make something crude from an old tape-recorder (i guess?). Infact you can pick up an old ATM too! Most people wouldnt have a clue what to do with them, even if you get to the point where you can see the bits/bytes on a computer you still have to have some basic engineering knowledge and instinct to figure out each system or know who to ask. The problem is a quick fix is never quick, most systems will be proprietry code that was written years ago and editing even the slightest thing would require a whole lot of work and money. Hopefully most systems were designed well - its not like its hard, just make sure you understand the premise that anything on a strip is like anything written in pencil on the front of the card: it can be seen and changed by anyone.
Nice wording in the post, it should say a new card format with up to 2TB storage. Backwards compatability is always good but i cant help thinking 2TB addressing is not gonna be enough. Can this be used as a multi-purpose card? Things like PDAs and phones really need a couple of slots that can be used to plug in memory, wireless cards and other things and it needs to be a single standard - something like USB in a long card-shaped socket?
I think its happened before - people calling up their bank etc and saying "hey, your card is insecure it stores your pin in plaintext" and the bank says "you shouldnt have a card reader! what do you think you're doing"
Its the standard bullshit you'll get from clueless people and experience says most cards in your wallet are probably badly designed, so yep, its probably not worth it to try and help these people by explaining whats wrong and what they can do because they are more likely to try and sue you.
Bu I think technically you have a legal right to see whats on the strip - its your personal data and would fall under the data-protection act?
Unless you have the equipment or a good friend in the phone company you cant track phone without the permission of the owner, unless some country has decided is a free-for-all. even so it brings up the old "Well if you have nothing to hide, why not let me track your phone??" which can be countered by the increasingly needed "Because i believe in a free and fair society where we are deemed innocent until prooven guilty and where we are resonably free from privacy invasion. It is my feeling that such a breach of privacy as you have suggested would be far more intrusive to me than it would provide you with peice of mind."
But really there needs to be more done to stop this being abused - maybe restrict tracking only if a missing-person has been filed.
Where else would a bus pass be more expensive than a PDA? Dont forget that a wireless system designed for 10cm could potentially be hacked to 10m, people who use any sort of wireless device in their projects have to remember this and i dont think they are.
Getting your messages in front of the right audiences requires an integrated approach, blending a range of marketing communications vehicles. hand grip? sliping and sliding? missing action? coating your joystick with rubber? improving your score?
And every post so far has been serious!

What happens when i want to change my neighbours tv channel through the window to piss them off?

If everyone is doing it then you dont have a choice but to agree to most contracts/eulas therefore its a monopoly and should be investigated!
Wouldnt patents just make the whole thing not matter anyway? Otherwise, what are they for!?

Well if your browser was decent it would be able to handle making those fonts bigger
