Not knowing much economics i have no idea if im talking crap or whatever but maybe there just inherently arn't enough jobs for everyone? What happens if/when we get to the stage where robotics and automation (some very small shell scripts) remove the need for most people to lift a finger? I know some jobs will always be around (unless we get AI!) But sooner or later we will get to the stage where we can all either go tan and have our robot servents do everything or have some serious economic crisis. What do the people who have no useful (in a money making way) purpose in life do if they make up 90% of the population?

There was a scene where a security guard was checking a passenger at an airport and the passenger put some matches and a lighter into the tray and asked if she could take them on. The security guard said "oh wait" and took out one of the boxes of matches and said "you can only have upto 4 boxes of matches" the audience just laughed.

Another scene showed an anti war group who had been infiltrated by an under-cover cop (photographic evidence and an interview by the sherif was given).

Then there was the "we don't actually read bills" interview and also a man who was visited by the FBI because he was heard saying that bush was an asshole.

I think the divx could have been an early cut or from the festival, it was also missing a couple of songs, but it was worth seeing the film on the big screen.

  5. Do they read what they vote on? on USA PATRIOT Act Survives Amendment Attempt · · Score: 2, Interesting

I just got back from watching Fahrenheit 9/11 where the congressman says to the effect of "Do you seriously think we read all the bills? Can you imagine how much work that would be?" we discover that most politicians haven't actually read the PATRIOT Act (so Moore goes around in an ice-cream van reading it to them) even though they voted on it. I know thats just one politicians' opinion chosen out of hundreds but it really seems to explain allot about government and makes allot of sense - with all these stupid bills flying around, who actually has time to read them all and even if you read an abridged version, can you really be expected to understand what it means on both sides of the debate within the time given? It doesn't take an expert to conclude (unless someone cares to give some evidence of congress being a super-efficient organised system) that the government has a crappy environment to work in and coupled with dick-head corrupt politicians nothing useful or meaningful beyond utter bureaucracy can ever get done there, people just sit, look bored and vote the way they're told.

Oddly there were many extra things in the film I saw (in the uk) that i didn't see in the cam-divx version from the us - anyone?

If your kids cant handle seeing a naked body or hearing the word fuck then really they're going to have issues in the real world, and if you want to keep it from them then just don't let them watch that stuff its perfectly simple. If i was running the FCC the most i would do is demand that stations stick a delay in and if they swear they have to press a button that sends a signal to the listeners radio/tv that generates a beep/blanks the screen (like the v-chip?) its up to the listener to enable that function though.

  8. Broadcast flag my ass on TiVo vs. Windows Media Center Edition · · Score: 1

I think the right to bare arms also applies to DRM in a round-about way. 'Arms' isnt actually defined as "guns, knives and other physical weapons" so technically it could be interpreted to mean general weapons, or even more generally it could mean "things that could easily be used to break the law but that are required for maintaining the security of the free state" - thats what the right to bare arms is all about right? Tools which may be used to break DRM or copyright can also be used to maintain security where security means the freedom of the people.

On a side note, school kids should be reciting the bill of rights and other important laws each day instead of some brainwashing sentimental crap, if the entire population knows what a law is all about, its harder for politicians to trample on it.

  10. The real question is - on Besieged Movie Industry Suffers Record Takings · · Score: 3, Interesting

How much longer before hollywood totally runs out of ideas? At the moment they're getting an average of about 0.2 original ideas per year from the mainstream industry but experts are predicting that the worlds supply of film ideas could run out as soon as 2006. Remakes have helped stretch the supply but already an IP crisis is looming. Movie studios however are confident that they have the reserves to meet consumer demand for the time being: they're using sequals, prequals, adaptations, book-to-films, comic-to-films, even old saturday morning cartoon-to-films to keep supply levels up. Recent writing-pool technology has even allowed combinations of comic-to-films and sequels as seen by Spiderman 2 and ofcourse the less environmentally friendly 'trillogy' which generally closes the door to additional sequals later on. Some say we already reached the point of no-ideas between 2000 and 2003 with the releases of Scooby-Do and Scary Movie 3 but others are more optimistic, suggesting that we can recylce remakes in another 20 years - remaking The Italian Job or Titanic for example could go on indefinately.

Its a good thing for bands to start doing this tho and thats basically the story of the internet - people making sites out of their basement that become big. CDs are just going to become secondry items to downloading, the record labels hopefully will loose out and go under (all the execs have big crack problems). New bands will start off with a website distribution model and make a bit more money - thats going to make them think twice about signing a contract unless they get a better deal and the end result will be cheaper and better music and less boy-bands which is good for everyone except cookie-cutter wannabes and crack sniffing execs and lets face it - who gives a shit about them?

It seems to me plainly obvious that something is so so wrong with the government that it needs everyone in the entire country to stop what they are doing right now and work on fixing it. Its the sort of wrong that should be on the bottom of the screen of CNN with the words "breaking news" this isnt a case of "oh poor poor people not being allowed to break the law" its a case of there actually being totally corrupt people *criminals* in the government and running very big corporations - you know when there's helicopter video of police about to find that murderer that's been at large and 20 cars are surrounding the house and guns are going off and dogs are running through fields getting a trail, well there's actually major criminals sitting right there in congress! forget the president getting sucked off by his intern and lying about it - this is here and now, real people, taking money, making laws that affect almost everyone - surely that's slightly more important than pretty much anything in the news you can imagine that doesn't involve 100s of people dying? i really expect to see fbi cars pulling up outside and carting off people, and i challenge anyone to present even a shred of evidence that im wrong! in fact it would actually make me feel good to know that the american government wasn't a land of total farse. All i can really say is good luck to the EFF!
