  1. Where is all of this money coming from? on Bitcoin Tops $1,000 For the First Time · · Score: 3, Interesting

With the high profile shutdown of Silk Road the number of things you can buy with Bitcoin would be considerably less. While it's true that there are other services available, it seems strange to me that so much money is being dumped into the system now. Maybe someone is trying to buy up enough coins for a trip to space? Or maybe someone is laundering a crapload of money and is having trouble on the outbound side (converting the money back into real life currency) and is creating a backlog?

Or it's an attack on the system itself, maybe someone figure out a way to race the market and make money?

NewEgg's lawyers spent a fair bit of time proving Diffie's claim. They had a textbook, his original paper, and he gave a very informative talk about the early days of public key crypto. I suspect what happened here is that they took TQP's argument to heart that said TQP has a piece of paper that says they own it, so the law says the must find in favor of TQP, despite whatever feelings the jurors might have on the issue.

TQP managed to make the trial about "Did Newegg infringe on this patent?", not "Is this a bad patent that should be overturned?" In that case, the answer is probably a yes.

  4. Re: Stupid judge/jury. on Jury Finds Newegg Infringed Patent, Owes $2.3 Million · · Score: 5, Informative

The most amazing thing is that TQP's argument against Diffie involved them finding potential prior art to show that Diffie wasn't the inventor of public key cryptography. Even if this argument succeeded, then it should have put an even bigger nail in their coffin since it would show even more prior art for the patent.

This really was the worst kind of patent too. So I see you're doing asymmetric crypto for key transfer...but ah ha, I got a patent for asymmetric crypto for key transfer using RC4! Checkmate! Like wow, you applied the most common (at the time) algorithm to a system that kind of resembles a SSL connection, except that it's with modems and came a few years after the big Diffie-Helmann paper.

And of course they aren't suing the people who made the SSL offload appliances that got NewEgg into trouble, they're suing all of their customers, for using the thing with the default settings. And they're calling it willful infringement because they didn't go an explicitly disable the RC4 feature to comply with a patent they knew nothing about.

Well, until the next update of course.

That said, there are always options. You can use dial up, you can use Internet Connection Sharing on Windows (or NAT on Linux) and an ethernet cable (crossover is better, but generally not necessary anymore) to hook up the PS4. A 300MB download will only take ~15 hours on a 56K modem, which is bad but you can leave it running overnight and into the morning. There is also Satellite Internet (a much too expensive option if all you care about is 1 300MB download though).

The easiest solution is probably to lug the box over to a friends house and bum their internet for awhile (maybe take them out to dinner while it downloads) to get the box fully set up.

My memories of Blockbuster was a store that if you weren't interested in the latest half dozen or so releases, then they weren't interested in you. The selection of older movies was extremely sparse and they were always checked out. I went in a few times and came out empty handed because there was just nothing interesting in stock. Then Netflix came along and I never went back to Blockbuster again. Netflix was rarely out of stock, and had an absolutely enormous catalog of older and obscure movies. Even if a disc was out, they would put you on a queue and send you the disc as soon as it was available.

Plus, Netflix didn't lie to me "Three Day Rental--Including Today, the Day you return it by 10AM, and a day we made up!" or try to rape me with fees. Oh, and it was cheaper per month than two rentals from Blockbuster.

If Blockbuster had bought Netflix I would have exploded with rage. Of course Reed Hastings went kind of loony there for awhile and made me worry about Netflix, but they seem to have gotten the leash back on him and kept the company from driving off the cliff.

Also, I would never pay seperately for the lyrics, that's rediculous.

The worst part is that those lyric sites always included links to Amazon/iTunes Music Store to buy the song. They were undoubtedly responsible for at least a few sales. The law says they're allowed to act like idiots though, so we gotta let them.
