The situation here is analogous to that faced by the developers of Wine - they aren't hacking individual applications, they're reverse engineering the overall system in order to bring about interoperability. The difference is that the CSS code can also be used to facilitate piracy (though DVD piracy is uneconomical).
DVD piracy is not only uneconomical, but almost lunatic -- who's gonna run an ftp site that carries decrypted DVD's? For the money you put in to something that requires that much storage & bandwidth, you could have not have only purchased a copy of every DVD in existance, but probably have cash left over to spare.
Plus Bandwidth. Who cares about cable modems, DSL, T1's -- the timeframe for copying ONE movie with one of those goes into the "days" range. Considering the fact that most people do not have high speed net access yet, we can only assume that Johnathin Q. 28.8ModemUser isn't goning to be hunting for decrypted DVD movies on ftp sites anytime soon.
You brought up wine -- we can use wine to run warez copies of applications, can't we? Does that mean wine caters to the warez community? When was the last time you saw a/pub/mp3,/pub/appz,/pub/gamez,/pub/pr0n,/pub/wine directory structure?;)
This is unfortuantely what the DVD people want the public to think -- that we're in this to copy DVD's to make our own profit, or to take away their own profit.
Ironically, they could have made a profit, AND prevented this entire fiasco if they would have LISTENED TO US AND RELEASED A DVD PLAYER FOR LINUX!
Okay, I'm done;)

I've NEVER gotten any error message saying I was missing some file in Windows when installing software.
This is one of the reasons why Windows apps are so bloated in download / cd size. Almost every application you can run will come with the shared components it needs to allow itself to be run. When was the last time you had to go online to download a shared library for Windows? Short of downloading the vbrunXXX.dll's, I don't remember a single time.
That's another reason why Windows is so unstable. One app may require component A, and install component A. Another app may require component B, and install component B. Another app may require both component A AND component B, but install predated versions of A & B than what was previously installed. Thus, when those two components are called by the first two programs, they may perform executions in a manner different than what was intended for the original applications, therefore - CRASH. The install programs are getting better with shared components, but it's a dangerous assumption to know that an installer will know what's best for all applications on your computer.
I was one of those who couldn't wait -- sorry to all diehard Linux fans -- and bought the Win32 version. Getting the demo to run in Win95 was a 5 month feat (mostly because it didn't work when I first tried it, and 5 months later I finally tried again..), in the meanwhile I fragged in Linux, and fragged often.
Now that the full version is out, I have a bigtime question. Is distributing the binaries for either platform considered Warez, even if no crack, CD Key, or PAK file is included? I can only assume that pak0.pk3 is Unchanged from the Wintel / Macintosh / Linux versions, so if I have that and my own valid CD key, am I legally entitled to download the binaries for another platform (in this case, Linux); or would it be considered illegal?
This is fuzzy ground, and I'd really like to hear some/.'s user's comments (and maybe some comments from those at Loki / Activision / id).
(Please note that for now, I have no plans for pirating Q3 on any platform)
Based on the McLibel case, I'd rather work at Microsoft than McDonalds.
Think about what would happen if Microsoft took a cue from McDonalds. About 90% of the people that post on/. would get nice little legal notices in the mail accusing them of sladering & [verb tense of libel, I don't think libeling is right] Microsoft.
"Flame Microsoft? We'll see you in court." Even MS hasn't stooped to McD's level yet...
Anyone wanna run NMAP on all these servers & grep the server OS version output on here? I would, except until I get back on campus, I have no 'net access in Linux -- too lazy to reconfigure PPP.
If they can manoeuver themselves to be a supplier of desktop applications under a "commodity O/S market" or whatever, then...well, what then? Is that a bad thing, a good thing? Would they matter? Show of hands -- who here is willing to drop vi or emacs for Word2K? Nobody? I didn't think so. Though most people might be happy with Office, I'm not sure the Linux crowd would be all that interested. Hmm.
(Raises hand)
I would. In a heartbeat, as long as the price was something I could afford. I find both vi & emacs almost intimidating with their REQUIREMENTS of learning the keyboard shortcuts. I can use vi to edit any file that I mess up and as a result am forced to boot into my system -- but that's the extent of where I use it. I've tried emacs. It's big, it's slow, it's powerful, and it's not for me. If we lived in a command line only world, I'd use it more than anything else, but this is the age of the GUI, like it or not, and I'm looking for something that's functional, stylish, ergonomic & streamlined.
For some reason, Microsoft products seem to fill out these categories fairly well, even if they skimp out on the stability & the software becomes horribly bloated by features most people will never use.
I don't want to spread around pro-Microsoft or pro-Linux FUD, because I'm quite happy with my dual boot system. But like any reasonable computer user, I have gripes with both sides of my computer. Microsoft releasing some of their prodcuts for Linux would definately help to reduce the number of gripes I have with Linux.
I can hear the shouts of "assimilation", the borg refernces, and the rest already.
Wouldn't the shouts of "assimilation" come in the opposite direction of what we're expecting? From the Microsoft supporters?
We're seeing the possible advent of Microsoft software on the *nix's & the *BSD's, not the possible advent of *nix & *BSD software on Microsoft OS's. If they were truly assimilating, wouldn't they take our technology, and add it to their own? Instead, they're taking their technology, and putting it into a market where they've already found out that they can't compete unless they adapt, not by forcing us to adapt.
{...} Why? Because unlike a private company (which can buy MS software all they want, for all I care, and more power to 'em, if that's what makes sense), government agencies are also simultaneously supposed to be stewarding the tax dollars of the taxpayers whose money allows them to function {...}
There's one thing I want to mention. You're in favor of Corel, however, if you're a US citizen, then you realize that if Corel wins & the DOL loses, the money won from the lawsuit is going to be coming out of our pockets. The DOL IS a Government agency, where do you think they get their money?
Even if the US Government is wasting their money by spending [our] money superfluously (like they haven't ever done that in the past;-) ), if they lose the lawsuit, we'll feel the pain from their loss -- we'll be footing the bill:-(
And the frequent sex changes must make things that much more confusing!
Oops. I checked through for that, & must have missed. I've gotten razzed in High School & College for using "Their" instead of "His or Her" more times than I can count;P
If there was a child concieved on any space station, imagine how hard it would be for her to adjust to actual gravity? A baby born in Zero-G, and spends his first few months, even years in Zero-G is going to have a hell of a time learning how to crawl, walk, and may possibly distort her sense of balance for the rest of her life. Plus, there's physiological issues here. INS, but I think we haven't done tests on creatures born in zero-g and adjusting to gravity. Would being exposed to earth-like gravity after several years of it's life developing in zero-g crush it's internal organs, much like we would be crushed if we were to visit the surface of Jupiter (if one existed...)?
And even the child's body wasn't crushed by the adjustment to gravity, would he even be capable of learning how to walk?
I'm opposed to animal testing, but this is something that should be researched before someone makes a mistake and loses a child unintentionally.

Hypothesising that the surface will one day heat up to meet the surface temperature of our planet, I'd say, oh, somewhere within the range of 4.6 billion years, give or take a few eons.
Now as soon as we can train OUR microbes to play baseball, we could get a game on.
This appears to be another sad case of Christianity infringing on Scientific and Social advancement
This isn't a sad case of Christianity infringing upon Scientific & Social advancement, it's a sad case of Christians infringing upon that which they do not take the time to research.
We are on the brink of something truly great, and God has to step in.
God has not officially stepped in for several millennia now.
An example of the sad state of the Church knowledge would be this: the Catholic Church in 1992 issued a statement saying that Galileo was right, the Earth does in fact revolve around the Sun. (... ) What are some things that religion has done?
Impeded progress of Science in general.
Denied the proof of glaring evidence.
Slowed the course of Science hundreds of years.
Instilled Fear and Hostility in the masses.
Don't get yourself confused. A Church is a business -- religion is not. Any business's goal, no matter which product they are trying to sell, is ultimately left up to the few at the top of the corporate ladder, or by a mandate of the masses who represent that business. The Catholic church is no different. There is a big difference between The Church and Faith. Christianity (of which I am a strong believer) or any faith has never impeded science, learning, or freedom. Churches have.
IMO (because again, I am a Christian), all churches have ultimately the right ideas and ideals, however the methods they use to achieve those are questionable, at the least.
(And yes, I belong to a specific denomination of Christianity. And no, I will not mention it in this thread -- it is irrelevant.)
If we had god given limitations, I'm sure the all-mighty would have let us know if we exceeded them.
Therefore to most Christians, we have not exceeded any limitations God has placed on us.
Is it hard for aethists to believe that God could have created Man not only in his image, but in his scope of potential? They're too hung up over whether not a God exists to ever get to this line of thinking.
To me, it's the opposite. My Voodoo2 crashes in Windows in Q3A, while in Linux it's silky smooth (albeit being 800x600 & 16 bit color). Although my Matrox G200 renders Q3A in Windows fairly well (and looks a little bit better due to color depth than the Voodoo2), it's slow on my P3-450.
I agree with you, if I can download the Win32 binaries, I'll buy the Linux version. Maybe if we're reallly lucky Loki will add in an/unsupported folder on THEIR cd with the Win32 binaries.
Why isn't it just going to be bundled into the Win32 box? I thought that was id's original idea -- to have both the Win & Linux executables on one CD. Has Activision pulled a GT, i.e. they're not willing just to include an/unsupported folder on the CD?
Well, until I find a box (tin or not) that has both the Win32 & Linux executables's bundled, I'm not gonna buy.

Doubtful. (no, Q3 is NOT like this, but I've played a few games recently that were ^_^)
Remember, it's a matter of opinion. No matter what any magazine tells you, there is NO proven "better game". I can't tell you what's better between UT & Q3, just because I have more fun playing UT, I think it's a better game. You don't have to agree with me, but don't go pointing out flaws in my logic as to what game I believe is better -- there's no way you can tell me that I *should* have more fun in Q3 than I do, or that I would have more fun in Q3 over UT if I was better in Q3. It's strictly a matter of opinion.
Don't go throwing flames, because I'm not in the mood. My original post is opinion, so is this one, and as such, it may disagree with what you believe.
Each particular gamer has their own tastes as to what's good or not. I can spend about 15 minutes at a time in a q3 server before I get frustrated that I've only gotten 3 kills, but then go hop on an Unreal Tournament CTF server & score 100 points in 20 minutes. As such, I think UT is a better game than q3 ^_^
But all these games are getting old if you think about it. They're the load of the same weapons, occassionally something unique coming alone (railgun for q2, ASMD for Unreal, Egon for Half Life). Each game is trying to pile on as many features as it can without really adding anything NEW to the genre.
