Hehe, due to `slow reading', I still have snippets of books I read once over 15 years ago. Mind you, they were novels, and those snippets are stored as images (scenes) rather than words, but that's how I read anyway.
Only problem, reading texts (non fiction) usually puts me to sleep. Might have to try the coffee beans mentioned above.
Oh, and for books that I re-read several times, even ~15 years ago? Just about the whole story line is in my head (sufficient to describe the story), with the odd detail crytal clear.
preferences just plain don't work

It's probably the '.'. Perl is probably usning it in a regex and '.' means `match any char'.
That arch field is in the first 16 bytes of an elf file, so a `multi arch' arch type would be needed with additional segments (? my spec's at home) for holding the arch dependent info and pointing to the arch specific sections). Could be done, but is it worth it?
Hey, imagine the cheap Beowulf cluster ...

hmm 30000+ (for networking) for a 100 node cluster. Not bad.
Or even better, 3000+ for a 10 node cluster. Truely afordable super-computing.
Actually, I have (at home) a SCSI tape unit that takes standard audio cassettes! The only reson I don't use is the only scsi card I have is VLB and the VLB slot in my computer is taken by my video card (et4k). When I get some more memory (RSN) I'll be able to get my second 486 going and hopefully use that tape drive. Hmmm, wonder what its capacity is....
Also, I bet his peers will make comments about the high gravity, low atmospheric pressure, high oxygen content (assuming it's still there, it is a biological by-product)...
BTW, I beleive X maxes out to 6 for billions of years (the sun will go `pfft' around then)
Your thinking in the wrong direction. You're right that the required capacity is 50% less than the supplied capacity, but the supplied capacity is 100% more than the required capacity (a nasty trap that gets many people).
Using your glasses and water, your 2 cup glass can hole 1 more cup of water than the 1 cup you have, and 1/1 is 100%. So, using your words, the glass is 100% too big, or the water is 50% too small (???eep, now I'm confused!)
Basicly, it depends very much on how you look at it; you're back to the half full/half empty problem, you just can't get away from it.
I agree with your comments about `usage'. Others keep complaining that most people don't have a need for the source, or the ability to do anything with it, but that's not the point.
The whole point of free software (I prefer `free' to `open source', means more to me) is that these people have the choice to make use of the source to the best of their ability, even if it means aquiring new skills. The option to tinker/distribute/hack/whatever is the point of free software, not the obligation (what obligation, I never felt (externaly) obligated to do anything with software other than get something done so I get my payslip).

RedHat doesn't "feed off" the community, they provide commercial support. A method which has been recommended by many in the Open Source community as a good way to make money here.
Actually, Red Hat does feed of the community, but as you say, they give something back. So, as I said elswhere in this thread, Red Hat is a Symbiont rather than a parasite.
At home on my cdrom I burned 15 months ago. It's sitting there waiting to become legal. Yes, I grabbed it off one of the ftp sites before it got zapped, but I never did anything with it due to my respect for id.
Yeah, yeah, I could/should have deleted it before I made the CD, but too late now, so I hope that JC releases the Quake source sooner than later (I have ideas...)
joke They should talk to my wife; she has ~63 warm fuzzies (cute little pink balls with eyes, antennae and feet, reminicent of Dust Puppy), available for a gold coin donation ($1 or $2 here in NZ) %LT;/joke
NOTE: my wife does the the above mentionsed warm fuzzies, but I'm submitting this as a joke
It takes some stuffing around, but the source tar balls have the *.spec files in them needed for building the rpms, so you could do it yourself (I do).

Go read `Heart of the Comet', by Gregory Bentfor (sp?) and David Brin, then answer your own question.
As a quick summary, who's to say that the earth bactiera that used magnetite didn't originate from that meteorite? (I'm not saying they did, either)

But isn't evolution part of life? I would say that `variety is the spice of life' covers evelution quite nicely.
Having said that, I agree with you: without variety, there can be no (?little?) evolution.

No, that's the whole point of Beowulf clusters: to tie crappy hardware together to make good hardware.
I think I know what card I'll be demanding when I eventually get a new computer. Hmmm, actually, as my 486 has 3 pci slots in it (asus mobo)...

Wow, they are committed.
I wonder when/if AP/Linuz is going into the main tree.
*sigh*, somebodies got to say it. A Beowolf cluster of these things could be interesting:):)
Thanks! I'll poke around and dig out the rest of the info I might need myself (ISTR seeing xanim mentioned on freshmeat)
Do I use xanim?
Other options?
Will my 486-66 cut the mustard?

Not a lame title!

Now, if only I had the hardware (a 486-66+ET4000 just doesnt cut the mustard (cheese, maybe:)).
True, the dog is more dangerous.
I did most of my growing up there (Medicine Hat).
BTW, MicroSoft -> MS -> Multiple Sclerocis (sp). Windows is one heavily scarred beast.
