Honest question, Iâ(TM)m not american: is this seen as an unexpected good bonus? I honestly assumed they would get free healtcare since they cant go out and see a doctor or pay for it.
If you want to be honest, please call it Taxpayer funded healthcare. "Free" is a lie..
$2-3 copay fed
TX $100/year MAX some situations are free and you get it even if you have no funds.
Liberal? You do understand the previous poster was trying to point out the fact that someone is paying for it, right? Nothing is free, someone has to pay, in the end...
It's cute that you think everyone can be rehabilitated.. Like that swatter guy, who was trying to swat people from jail... Some people are too stupid to be anywhere else other than jail...
Consider Bernie Madoff. $20 billion profit from his scheme would result in a 20,000 day stay in the slammer, which would be 54 years, which seems very reasonable for the crime committed, although I wouldn't bicker if somebody wanted the 270 year penalty instead.
Using your math of 1 day per $1000, I have arrived at a far different number than you. I come up with 20 MILLION days in jail.. That's 54,794 1/2 years...
You are valuing jail time at 1 day per million dollars stolen, which seems woefully inadequate...I suspect if I stole a million dollars from you, you'd be rather upset if I got 1 day in jail.....
It is a core tenant of capitalism. Some growth is always desirable. If you don't grow and one customer leaves, you'll have less revenue.. If that happens too many times, you'll have to fire someone... As long as you are growing, jobs tend to be stable. Of course the best growth is sustainable growth and growth where you aren't compromising yourself.
Since you want to use the biological analogy, no growth gives you dwarfism.. Not a desirable outcome either..
Growth can continue indefinitely as long as the population is growing.. We'll add another 5 billion humans over the next 50 or 100 years, so, in theory, Amazon can continue to grow for at least another century.
Mind you, I'm not suggesting that this would be good, just that it's possible.
It's amazing how you people never bring up "other people's money" when billionaires get local taxpayers to pay for the sports stadiums for their professional ball teams.
Of course it comes up. Most jurisdictions in the US require a public vote on it. The issue is that _most_ people are idiots. They don't understand that it's just another subsidy. We don't have Capitalism in the US anymore.. We have crony capitalism, corporate welfare, and an addiction to spending money. At every step the Government is engaged in crushing competition and small business.
Yeah, you're not getting it.. It's not about $50 for 50 channels or $20 for 30 channels.. It's about paying for ONLY the channels I want.. We want to choose exactly what we pay for.. I'm not paying shit for bundles of channels. $1 for 100 channels is no bargain if it's a bunch of shit I don't want to watch.
There needs to be a menu where I add the channels I want, one at a time, and Google or [insert company name here] then delivers those EXACT channels and bills me appropriately (and reasonably).
Valid points, to be sure. But we already have this phenomenon in regards to professional sports.. The odds are what? 10,000-1 that someone will end up being paid to play a professional sport? Some kids try that route, others are more grounded in reality and hit the books..
....but come on...they're letting him drop out in 9th grade. There no chance anyone in this family is going to be able to protect his interests against the sharks
At best, this kid can probably expect to do this for a few years. With the right planning and saving (I know, we're asking a lot out of a 9th grader) he could earn enough money to be very comfortable for the rest of this life. I value an education, but I don't see the problem with giving him this opportunity. He can always go back to school but this income may not be around in two years. Sometimes you've got to "get while the getting is good".
Makes me think back to the JennyCam girl.. What was her run? 3 years or something? But she made a shit-ton of money while she was doing it. I don't know how wisely she invested it, but if she was careful and conservative there will be money, for her, forever..
Always the attitude of the statists... The government must do it... Nevermind the fact that the first police departments, fire departments, and road construction were all volunteer or privately funded endeavors... Hell, we had volunteer fire departments still in operation here in California until just a couple of years ago when the State forcibly absorbed them... They did have some limited state funding, but the vast majority of the operations were done sans-payment.
People can/will band together to get things done..
A tree won't benefit from increased rainfall if it all happens in one month of the year and the tree experiences drought like conditions the rest of the year.
Says who? That's exactly how Joshua Trees get through life. Things adapt.. Takes a while, sure.. But to simply declare that life won't benefit seems rather...short-sighted. To be clear, I'm not claiming Climate Change is a good thing. We know things are good the way they are.. They could become better, they could become much worse.. I'd rather stick with the devil i know, but I don't run around declaring how things are going to go.
Everything he said was accurate. There are absolutely FREE SPEECH ZONES on MANY campuses.. Controversial speech is labeled HATE SPEECH.. And if you really are a Marxist, then you are a goddamn moron.. How many more millions will need to die before you get it through your head that Marxism (as opposed to socialism) is a BAD FUCKING IDEA?
Most people aren't strung out on heroin.. But we don't declare "Heroin isn't a problem!". Maybe it's time to understand that, for some people, these games are a problem.. I've read a couple of study blurbs that talked about the link between addiction and serotonin levels in people. These same studies show that, for some people, social media / games / you name it will generate these addictive levels of serotonin. It's a small percentage but so is the percentage for heroin addicts..
Few things in life are YES/NO, BLACK/WHITE, ONE/OTHER. There are shades of grey. Most people do fine with video games.. For some people they become life consuming. I've watched it with my own eyes.. This doesn't mean we have to implement regulations.. But maybe we could fun a couple of really comprehensive studies.. Get all the facts and then decide, as a society, what to do about it..
Standing up and declaring that "video games aren't a problem" might be 99.8% accurate.. But that.2% inaccuracy (if it exists) would affect a HUGE amount of people in a nation as large as the US (or in a collection of nations as large as the EU). If nothing else, it bears further study and perhaps some level of monitoring/data gathering on how many people are being treated for video game addiction (if any) and data of that type..
But, it's pretty hard to have a useful discussion about anything when the data seems to be lacking..

Restitution should be having to pay for the replacement systems and personally rebuilding and configuring each one of them.
Right.. That's the guy I want building my computers...... I hope you aren't serious..

......Then the seller curtly told me to take down the bad review.
Hope you told him/her to go eff themselves.

That you would think a human needs to monitor a display 24/7 is idiotic.
Well, as the article pointed out, you can't call OUT from these numbers... You can't even reply to a fucking text, so......
It's like a crippled version of Google Voice with less functionality and more cost.. So yeah...
Thanks for proving, once again, that slashdot readers don't actually read..

Guess you don't know what durable plastics are made from.. Biodegradable plastics aren't always an option...

According to this article we might end up with another habitable continent. Seems like some of the losses might be negated by gains.
Yeah. It is a work day. It's great when your job involves the internet... Can fuck around all day on Slashdot if I want, and since I'm the boss....

You do realize you have a mental condition, right? Seriously.. Normal people don't act like you. Seriously.. You need to seek treatment..
Maybe they can move out of the igloos and into normal houses. ;)

An AC calling someone else a troll... That's rich...
It isn't THE problem. It is A problem for SOME people.
