Umm. There's very little information on this project here. But is it possably VNC repackaged? or is it something else? I would imagine it's something else for the price. but then why the name? maybe VNC bundled with something else?
One other thing what's up with all the renderings of the cases? why no pictures? REAL pictures I mean.
There are many who belive you do an act for the sake of an act not for fame. Many famouse quotes in history are anonymous. Why? mostly because it was less important people know who wrote the message then it was that people heard the message itself. It's the content not the name that matters in the end. Though something can be said for having name recognition. But the main problem with name recognition is that when a person has faith in you they stop lisetning to you. they follow you blindly and do not think for them selves. The icon becomes more then the man or the idea. When this happens egos inflate and people start holy crusades.
I've been looking for something like this for a very long time now. Imagine couple it with a switchbox. "on A is alpha linux, on B is Intel linux, and on C is Beos" heheh... or for those who like the distro wars "On A is debian, on B is redhat, and on c is slackware." heheh... Gotta love that!
Yes it will definatly be interesting. but what do you have aginst over-zealious users with no life? I mean how does one know if they're in this catagory? I mean if you spend more time on slashdot than, say, you do talking to other people would that count?:)
Ok. I think we should all step back a second and look at this. We need to evaluate whether it's fair to use this parady of the microsoft slogan or not. I would like to say that I don't see it as incringing upon microsoft as it's not that widly used. 400 searches on altavista is negligable. I think what has microsoft worked up is the intention of the parody. The intention is of couse to show linux's superiority to windows. We know of the superiority of Linux and this seems the easiest way to say it in few words. This is a Good thing(tm). Unfortunatly it has a nasty side effect as well. This side effect is that it TIES us to microsoft. By creating this sort of symbiotic realationship in the end are we not doing more harm then good?
Would it not be better to come up with some slogan that could be used across the board and not bind us into a paradigm? In the end we need to ralize this is not about linux vs windows. this is about creating good, solid and reliable software. And the PR needs to be about that. Sure there will be comperisions it is the medias way. But do we have to fall into that and create the paradigm within our own community.
Atleast you told us what microsoft was going to do next. Beware DotSlash! (I'm being comical here but the sad part is I wouldn't put it past them though I doubt they would be that obvious about it.)
The problem with all this is that we keep getting more and more over our heads. If there was a civil war how many of our own military would turn? if our world were to fall into total economic collapse how far would world wide war be? how far are we from that now? We never intervened in south africa. we never intervened in Turkey killing kurds. How about china? Last I heard they still had most favored trade status who cares that they mowed down their own students with tanks. Now what are we doing? How long untill the world finally speaks up? how about the more cluefull of the american public? how long untill we break the walls that seem to blind us? Do we have to destroy the earth before we understand?
Ok very good writeup. But let's talk about democracy and capitalisim for a moment. First off they are not the same thing as you do point out but most people seem to acuate one with the other. The comment that they go hand and hand is not correct. One is a system of government and the other is an economic system. Now to truly get into this I need to start to say that elite power around the world has done a good job at spreadding economic FUD (this IS what it is) about ANY other system of econimic diversity. If I even speak socailisim I'll get my head cut off by a bunch of people who don't know the technical definitions of the words and attack at an idea they have about capatilisim somehow meaning democracy. This notion people attack on is plain wrong. We have people who buy cars every other week who live in multi-million dollar houses simply because great-great grandad steve was in the right place in the right time. while people starve and live on the streets a few miles away. We have great ogopolies and monopolies running the world. States compeating with each other for a companies buisness they sell out their people. We are destroying our environment simply because it cost to much not to. our world is OBSESSED with money and this in turn will destroy us. This is the root of the problem from wich most problems stem. The rich keep getting richer as the middle class keeps shrinking. When we destroy our world over green peices of paper is when we will look very foolish I would think.
Sorry about that I had to get that out. It's a point not often made and you know us philosophers we have to throw a few wrenches into the works and hopefully get people thinking before it's to late in the visions of tomarrow we see.
Mildly Burnt out are we? First off Take a few breaths and relax. Second I think alot of people have these problems and I really thik it comes in the order of what's installed on a system seeing as new dll's cause there to be an almost infanate amount of different windows installs. I myself have a network running a bunch of 98 boxes at my work. Unfortunatly about a week after I installed them they started crashing right and left. No idea why. Had to re-install on three machines. and the sad art is these people don't even know how to install software so nothing was installed on it after I left. I really hate windows.
I was talking more along the lines of the people who use the code. it is the masses that move things and their voice counts. It is the people that drive an application and it is their voice that matters. I know alot of hackers will say they produced an application for themselves but if the Linux kernel had not recived such widespread use would it have so many features?
I don't think it will make anyone stop coding. But if we are to get past this point there needs to be a realization that attacking people for their belifes will getus nowhere.
if in the end no one said thank you and only attacked you would you bother releasing your code? would you add features the people who attacked you wanted?
All I'm saying is that we need to stop this bickering it's making us look bad and hurting people. And fellings do exisit even if we try to ignore them.
Now we come across the problem of the infamous Thinking about what your going to say next instead of listening paradigm. We all have opinions but why should we tear ourselves apart because they differ? why should we "Fight with ESR" if we don't agree? why should we destroy ourselves with our own arogance?
We are at a crossroad now. Many people proclain FUD as our worst enemy when what it quite simply comes down to it that we our our worst enemy. For great movements usually do not fall from outside pressure but from an internal inability to comprimise built out of arrogence and disrespect for each other.
If we do not stop seeing these ideas we hold as "the one true way" then we are no better then microsoft or any other closed freedomless system. We become the enemy and in so doing create in ourselves everything we stand against. for when there is only one true way then freedom and choice go out the window.
I don't think they're so much ignred as much as not acted upon. It is the lurkers in the shadows that hold the real power here in their voices that are so often not used. Even a short letter of thanks to a developer or a service provider (say slashdot or freshmeat) can and does make a difference. I've submitted a small peice on this and I'll try to write a few more on other topics as well maybe they'll get posted. Some things that hide in the shadows need to be brought into the light alittle more.
Slashdot Longhairs flame ESR for trying to make a point. I can see it now. Amazing that the guy has feelings. You'd almost think he was human or something.
I mean is it really to much to ask that makers of software and people doing a service to the open source community not be flamed at every turn or even thanked once in ahwile? is there so little respect that we can't atleast recognize another for their achievments and actions?
At what point does the ego take a back seat and we try to work toghether? why should an idea be a reason to totally discredit a person? I have an idea. instead of flaming try to make your points of disagreement known and if you don't have any points to say don't say anything you'll help your self in the end by showing your intelligence is above that of a 12 year old who just got a new computer.
actually... I use debian on my laptop. and haven't used slack since well it's been awhile. my point was more to those people who use a distro as a way to look down on someone else. To me it's all linux some of it may be packaged rather strange for my taste but it's still linux.and that's the point taste use what you want I use debian and don't care what anyone else uses.
The error in ignoring a problem is that it never goes away. It locks itself into a cycle of getting larger and larger untill it's almost to hard to deal with later when the problem effects you MUCH more then it did earlier. Therefore we have to speak up.
People take life way to seriously. use what you want to use and stop trying to make everyone fit into your mold for life. and when someone challenges your mold does it truly matter?
Remember what I said about looking in my closet. I really think you should stop that the last time you broke my voltron!

What fun would that be? I mean if it's going to crash it might as well go down with enough flames the whole world can see eh?

sorry about it not flowing when I go into rant mode sometimes my spelling and grammer get neglected.

Imagine how many sites we could bring the slashdot
effect to with one of these...:)
People take life way to seriously. use what you want to use and stop trying to make everyone fit into your mold for life. and when someone challenges your mold does it truly matter?
And there is much efficiency in you taking the time to whine about it...
hehe the resonant gravity coil...I truly never thought I would see that one again.
$5100 wtf? I really hope this got so high because some people found this a nice way to contribute to charity. if not...
