When you're talking about Unix, the line tends to be blurred a lot. My machine for example does it all, server tasks, workstation tasks, everything I need it to do...and it can, it's Linux

But I think one of the main reasons people advocate Linux for workstations is its wide support of hardware and quick support of hardware. I would switch to FreeBSD in a second if only I could use my IDE cdburner...but I can't, so its Linux for me. Just one example that illustrates the bigger point.

Another reason for this (IMHO) is that you will get super-deluxe security w/ OpenBSD, You can run NetBSD on more platforms, and FreeBSD has the highest level of stability (on i386). I think these characteristics are much less important for workstations, where periodic reboots are ok, everything runs on intel chips, and no server processes are running.

When it comes down to it, you just have to know what you need, and what each OS can provide. The server/workstation "rule" is more of a rule of thumb, just a guideline.

I have a friend who goes to the University Of Pittsburgh (CMU is also in Pittsburgh in case you didn't know). She just got an email yesterday and they said they would be scanning the network soon and disciplining students who have illegal mp3s. So apparently this is becoming more common.

    I suggested the following:

    1. Rename *.mp3 to *.3pm or *.zip or *.123. I doubt the University really cares, they're just trying to cover their ass.

    2. Hide all illegal mp3s. In their place put a few legit ones from unsigned bands at mp3.com. See what they say, if you're willing to test the system.

I'll try to get the letter and post it under this thread (or if anyone has it please feel free to do so).

You email them and they get back within 3 hours, any time day or night. If you want to change something at 3am, send an email and it'll be changed by the time you wake up. Once I even recieve a personal call to make sure everything was ok. (It was a particularly drawn out q&a back and forth between me and them.) All the conflicts between distros and libraries, etc etc. Face it, it's not as easy as double clicking setup.exe.

Also, the reason I use RPMs when I can is not to make installing them easier...its so I know what is on my system and so I can easily uninstall it.

I am not a Win user (except at work) but I am not blind enough to think that everything is easy as pie. Linux is fun but it takes some fscking work.
