The only types of people I know with crackberries are attorneys, hedge fund managers and accountants that would have zero patience for learning a new way to type. They don't want to fiddle with T9 when most of the stuff they type is very specialized and wouldn't show up automatically. A mini-QWERTY kbd is quick and good enough for their needs.

If your friend has been working on the business plans and can serve as a "face" for the company, then he should be the CEO, if only for those reasons. He should probably also be the CFO, although most finance students out of college don't have any practical knowledge to speak of. Since you're clearly the nuts and bolts guy, you should be the Chief Operating Officer, or COO. When I interview clients to evaluate their companies, I ask the CEO or CFO about the financial questions and the COO about the operations.

I've been using Pine since 1994 or 1995 when I got an account on my college's Solaris network. When I signed up for a web hosting service a few years ago, I made sure that a) I could SSH into some flavor of *nix and b) they ran Pine. It took no time at all for Pine to show its age and inflexibility. First of all, I can't always SSH into my service, but a web browser can be found almost anywhere. When it comes to sending or receiving attachments, basically any web or local-based email client pwns Pine. With Pine, I need to FTP attachments up and down from the server. That said, I still love its interface...each function is a button press away and the command options are displayed on the bottom of the screen. Honestly, if Google one day decided to implement a web-based and multimedia-enabled Pine-like interface for Gmail with all of its keyboardy goodness, I'd be in heaven.

In my opinion, a child in possession of X dollars, where X dollars equals the price of a desired video game, constitutes parental permission. It's not a matter of saying that parents "should" be responsible, it is a matter of stating the *fact* that parents *are* responsible. If a child cannot be trusted to make a purchase, then it should not be given responsibility to handle money.

Let's look at this another way. Retailer-based rating/permission systems are flawed because they do not in any way consider the values of the parents. One parent may not mind if Junior purchases the latest and greatest violent M-rated game, because he or she is aware of that child's capacity to understand such topics. On the other hand, another parent may not even want Junior to purchase a particular E or T-rated game, because perhaps the underlying message or theme in the game is something that goes against that family's value system, whatever it may be. In the end, the most objective judgment as to whether Junior can buy a certain game comes when the parent puts X dollars in his little hands.

Hundreds of bytes? Spare me the drama. If you're the type of person with the wherewithal to even think about developing a number-blocking app for your phone, then you probably have the type of phone where hundreds of bytes isn't going to matter. What you call a "cheap and dirty" solution I'd call "cheap and simple." My "cheap" referring to less use of my time thinking about the problem.

Cool, another fan of Father Roderick! I'm not a Catholic or a Christian in general, but I listen to his Daily Breakfast podcast every day. He's definitely changed my idea of the stereotypical view of a priest. He's a huge fan of things like Star Wars and Harry Potter, and even does specialty podcasts that explore the mythological concepts in both. Among other things, he's a huge fan of the TV shows, "24" and "Lost." He once geeked out for about 10 minutes talking about how cool it was to have the cops chasing him while playing Need For Speed Most Wanted.

The most insightful thing I ever heard him say was a commentary about sex and violence in movies and video games. In general, he's not against it if it's integral to the story at hand. And, to paraphrase him, "Do you realize how much sex and violence there is in the Bible?" He's also very open about the history of the Catholic church and talks about how a lot of its holidays (such as easter and christmas) have pagan origins. Recently, he had a lengthy discussion and criticism about the church regarding all the sex abuse scandals.

All of Fr. Roderick's shows are under the umbrella of his fledgling Starquest Podcast Network, that includes the podcasts of a couple others that he's working with. The web site for SQPN is at www.sqpn.com.

Ah-HA! So you're the guy my old finance professor used to make fun of. When a stock splits, you don't get anything for free. The company is still worth whatever it's worth, it's just that now the stocks on a per share basis are worth half as much because you have twice as many shares. When I examine companies, I don't even bother with per share statistics, I look at the aggregate numbers only.

On the topic of dividends, whenever a company pays dividends, that equates to less money that can be invested back into growing the company. Unless you take your dividend checks and invest it in more stock of the same or similar companies, your total rate of return will be lower.
