I still see it as appeasement and favoritism. It should either be one way or the other. I understand what you're saying, I just disagree with the thinking that has apparantly gone into this loophole.

But who decides that? What if I have more money to burn than sense and decide I want to buy a Mainframe? Shouldn't I then be allowed to alter it any way I see fit, to follow the philosophical logic that the FOSS community purports to embrace?
No, you're not alone. It's an overhyped, yet to be market proven piece of gear. Looks pretty, but it's hardly worthy of all this hype.
Go ahead fanboys, mod me down as flamebait for speaking the truth. They'll sell some units, but they won't be taking over the world of mobile phones by storm anytime soon.

For all Stallman's huffing and puffing about defending freedom, it sounds like he caved in to big business here.
That's because he has.
As for the greater issue of the GPL 3, I don't have much doubt that a lot of business that were considering going to FOSS based solutions will take pause and adopt a 'wait and see' approach while the lawyers sort things out. I'm not arguing the pro's and con's of it; I'm just making an educated guess based on many years in business. The net result may actually be a slowdown of the pace with which FOSS solutions become adopted by business, even if it's just because of FUD being flung around by FOSS opponents.
I've played guitar for over 25 years. If I sit down and transcribe a song to tab by ear, is that not reverse engineering? Isn't that supposed to be allowwed? I don't have the original music, so in effect I'm creating it all over in a clean room approach to 'look and feel' like another song. The tabs you see out there are rarely 100% accurate representations of the original music.
This is just silly BS. I'm tempted to start posting tabs all over the place. Tab tshirts, anyone?
I should have said I have little doubt, mainly because of history. I'm fairly certain that future models will make our current understanding of cosmology seem feeble and even wrong, because time and again advances in our understanding of the cosmos have revealed to us how little we really know.
I've had a MythTV box for a couple of years. It's nice, works well. However, my new Vista Home Ultimate media machine is far easier to use and 'just works'. The ironic caveat, as mentioned in the article, is that MythTV (and it's underlying Linux kernel) have *better* hardware support than Vista! On supported hardware I find the Windows Media Center experience to be far better in general though.
That being said, if I were building a quiet entertainment center PC, I'd go with a Myth box and customize it to my liking. I can do that because I know how. Most consumers do not.
Actually nothing has been 'proven' with regards to the beginning of the Universe. Everything is still theory, and while significant holes have been blown in the ekpyrotic model, I've no doubt that the 'real truth' if ever found will probably look significantly different from either the Big Bang or the Ekpyrotic model.
I stopped really caring after the last player's strike. An average family can't even afford to go to a game anymore while barely in shape steroid ridden slobs scratch themselves on national television (when you can see the game that is) while making fistfulls of cash. I voted with my wallet and viewership.
The MLB has *really* jumped the shark on this one though.
That still isn't a very good reason not to offer support for any application, not just MythTV. Better to expose the DSP functionality in an easy to access manner that any application can use.
I read it before I posted at all, thank you. Your are correct about their *older* product, but this discussion about their *new* product. It's a step backwards and I still maintain it's overhyped overpriced garbage that nobody really needs.
A software firewall is more than enough for those situations. Heck, for half that price you could buy a little router and carry it with you! I'm being a bit facetious here, but I really don't see a good niche for this product as you can tell from my previous posts in this thread.
A true hardware firewall wouldn't have to hijack traffic via a driver. It would have it's own ethernet port and would inspect data before it even touches the network stack on the host OS.
Driving a display that's good enough to view movies on and decoding video at the same time draw quite a bit more juice than decoding audio/still image files. Still, I am hoping they can get the 1 day in your range, otherwise it's useless for anyone who travels at all.

It got modded up because any post that makes the US look bad, true or not, gets modded up here.
There are plenty of real reasons to take shots at the US. No need to use false or misleading information to do so, yet we see it daily on Slashdot.

Yes, because we all know advances in materials science have never benefited anyone.
Some of them are busy fapping to the pic right now, so hush. You'll spoil the mood.
Because if they run out of redundant laws to pass they will be out of work.

A small handheld airhorn, like the kind people use at sporting events. Try it. It works wonders on unwanted callers.

Maybe they *want* MS to buy them? After all, the major shareholders and the directors would all make huge fistfulls of cash in a buyout.

It's a hyped up device that nobody really needs. We're posting in a Slashvertisment thread after all.
It's a marketing gimmick. At the very best it's a software firewall with a (not really needed) co-processor to do packet inspection.
Personally it looks like a waste of money to me.

A bit hyped up if you ask me.
I've seen the same thing on my Comcast HD DVR and my Media Center PC's, but on our TiVo it nails it every time. Why is that?
If you count celebrations for the Vernal and Autumnal equinoxes you can just stay drunk all the time.
