I agree, and I had fun playing it. What people seem to be forgetting is that ID's business model is more about selling game engines than the games themselves. They make games these days to showcase their engine as much as they do to sell the game itself.
I wouldn't have used the terms that the AC did, but I can understand his anger. The OP was out of line for the real reasons mentioned, minus the ad hominem crap.
Nah. Experience has showed me that trying to be clever or thinking one is clever usually leads to failure. Read my latest journal entry and you might understand. I could care less how I'm moderated or what people think/say about me. I just like to talk sometimes (or type, as the case may be)
I'm 41 and at most games I've play online, and they are many, I totally own the 13 year olds. They don't like it much either. Then again I've been playing various games in arcades on on PC's since I was...hmmm about 13. Maybe experience and natural dexterity is better than good gear or having too much time on one's hands?
At least the astronauts didn't die in vain. I mean, they didn't anyways since they all know there are risks, but recovering useful data from the drive adds maybe a tad more meaning to the loss.
In that light I stand corrected, if that was the OP's intent then I withdraw my criticism. I've just seen too many people calling the RIAA and it's ilk terrorists because of their heavy handed tactics. They are reprehensible and IMO an illegal cabal/trust, but they don't sink to the level of true terrorists.
I know you were joking, but comparing the likes of the RIAA to those who blow themselves up to kill innocent people in order to make a political statement is just as bad or worse than the RIAA saying that downloading is stealing. Both are unnecessary hyperbole that cheapens the real meanings of 'terrorism' and 'theft'.
Not exactly, but I am in favor of anyone who has not committed a violent crime having the right to bear arms for protection from both criminals and tyrants.

Exactly! I'd mod you insightful if I had the points today. It's not even about stopping crime. That's just a ploy along the lines of 'Think of the children' or 'We need to go get the WMD'. It's about having the infrastructure in place to engage in pervasive monitoring of citizens in the future.
I'm not saying it's a true conspiracy born in smoke filled rooms over glasses of single malt, though it may be. Governments are entities of their own and act as such. They will continue to grow and try to take more and more power as time goes on. It's their nature. Only vigilance of a free populace can even have a slim hope of stopping that inevitable trend.

While you make a good analogy and your conclusion is possible, I think it's more likely that the current Internet will just continue to increase in bandwidth and services to end users. I would not be surprised to see Internet2 one day be either still stuck as an academic only network, or just dissapear altogether.
I work from home when I am not travelling. Granted, I travel 1-3 weeks out of each month (average is maybe 3 days every other week), but when I am not travelling you can keep all your fancy high tech offices. I have it far better in my high tech home office.
Plus there is nobody to tell me I can't have a beer during afternoon conference calls.
We need MASSIVE spending cuts. That much is true. However, keeping taxes at a reasonable rate is essential to keeping the economy going. Government spending does NOT help the economy; it hurts it for the most part due to the massive waste inherent in most bureaucracies.
Nobody can tell me that the founding fathers intended for the Government to be mother, father, and caretaker. Certainly we need some safety nets for the most disadvantaged among us, but the current level of spending on social programs is totally untenable and unsustainable.
I never understood why they didn't put in some sort of interpreter and make SCR files some kind of bytecode that can only display graphics data. SCR files are a HUGE vector of malware infection because of the absolutely insane design they used.
Just to short cut the 'Screensavers need network access! I want my Flickr photos to display...or my Weather data to display', etc., IT IS A SCREEN SAVER. It's purpose is to secure and protect your computer and screen when you aren't using it. WTF are you doing sitting there staring at your screensaver? Good pot?
I really wasn't bashing it. Like I've said I use and have worked on GPL software. It is what it is. There was no bashing in my post. Save your knee jerk reaction next time:-)

That was exactly my point. The meme of 13 year old uber gamers is very, very old and quite incorrect.
;-)
I'm happy to say that I can enjoy recreation. I don't have much time to game these days but it's still a good outlet.
The flames and naysayer posts are just jealous
Thank you, she is. Not because of my recreation activities but because of my other accomplisments in life like my career and my lovely family.

You're fired.
Next!
Forgot to mention that I'm the boss. So sorry.
I applaud you for your excellent strawman argument.

If more people would just stop buying crap like that it would go away.

Kidding aside, 10^24 is a Yottabyte.
I think they should use 'Lottabyte' instead.

I am a bit underpaid then, and I should probably gain some weight. I do fit the 'hairy' and 'middle aged' description though.
Yeah you remind me about that NOW. Too late I'm afraid. At least I didn't get fired.
Kidding aside, I tend to dress business casual most days even at home. It helps with my mindset. Fridays I wear jeans and a tshirt.

The RIAA is a cartel and should be disbanded and it's members prosecuted under the RICO Act.
Of course, IANAL so maybe I am incorrect or just engaging in wishful thinking.

Just ask Tom Cruise. It was the Xenu!
