I disagree. If an employer is paying for the machines and network and paying the employee to work then they have every right to read any email they want, anytime.

It's got nothing to do with human rights. Don't use work email for anything other than work and you'll be OK.

I just stay invisible on IM most of the time. If someone is on that I want to talk to, I can message them. My close friends and family know that if I am around I'll answer them even if they can't see them.

I also don't feel the need to instantly answer, even on private work related IM. If it's urgent sure, but urgent matters warrant a phone call generally. I place IM somewhere in between email and phone for the sense of urgency factor. Of course the actual content and context of the message matters and everything in life should be taken case by case :)

People stress themselves out too much with the 'OMG I JUST GOT IM'ED I'D BETTER ANSWER RIGHT AWAY'.

"Slashdot's ads are actual advertising, while those seizure inducing flashers, popup windows, and fake system alerts are marketing.

In the past week or so I've three times clicked on a discussion link here only to be greeted by one of those full page ads with the 'Click here to skip' links at the top. I'd call that just about as annoying and intrusive as popups.

I'm a capitalist and have no problem with sites using advertising to generate revenue, but this is an instance where marketing research was just plain bad. I'm betting quite a few other slashdot users are annoyed as these full page ads become more common here.

You're correct to a point. I should have clarified as 'inciting to violence' rather than inciting to break the law. Civil disobedience is a good thing. For that matter, there sometimes comes a point where violent revolution is a good thing as well (prior art: The American Revolution).

I am basically of the mind that you just have to follow the course of the three boxes. Soap Box, then Ballot Box, then Ammo Box. I also hope and pray that the latter option is never really required. I would far prefer a political revolution to an armed one.
