I can't say the same for Mac OS X. In total I bet these worms cost the United States alone $10 billion in lost productivity and computer repair costs. Now I seem to forget the last time Macintosh had any sever problems that affected anyone seriously. I know this is flamebait for you Windows fans that disregard the Windows worms like it was all a haulocause type conspiracy to make light of your beloved Windows. To all those conspiracy theorists out there, I love you man.

  4. Re:Solaris will become a legacy OS.. on Solaris 8 & 9 Free for x86 Once Again · · Score: 0

The threading model will far surpass the threading model that Linux uses. Solaris uses a hybrid user/kernel level multithreading that allows user level threads to receive kernel interrupt messages to interact with a user level thread scheduler. In Linux kernel level threads a blocked thread will block for its CPU time and give up when its time is done. In Solaris, if a thread blocks on I/O or something of that nature, it can give up its time to the next thread for the app currently running. This sounds like whatever and of course with all the smart programmers this should be easy to accomplish, but it is not in Linux yet and it will take a lot of years to fully reprogram the threading system for Linux to allow for Solaris's method or a better method if one comes along

There is a simple reason for the lack of investment in trains in the US. THE US AUTOMOBILE INDUSTRY. The automibile industry spends millions of dollars lobbying politicians not to build or subsidize the train system any more than they have to. Between this and marketing the great features of cars and the freedom that cars can provide, there is not the public interest necessary to make politicians invest in passenger rail travel. They have been talking about railways in Southern California for years, including one from LA to Las Vegas that would take 1 hour (a bullet train) and one from Orange County to Los Angeles that would take 30 minutes that would help the immense polution and insane traffic that polutes the lifestyle of the residents here. I don't see the downside to creating better public transportation in a place that is a nightmare because of cars. Do you?

Beyond the type of stuff on the Discovery channel, which is really Science/History rolled into one and is pretty interesting to watch when you have nothing better to do. What more in detail do we want?

That said, I think as a society we are way behind the rest of the world in respects to math and science as a whole (Some of the greatest social acheivements in science and engineering have come from the US). Look at the crazy math geeks out of the Eastern Europe and pit them against a math geek and they will be quoting the proof to Fermat's Last Theorem while our geek is talking about Magic the Gathering Cards. Maybe if we focused television away from sitcoms and over to intelligent programming we may see things change. I know if I could watch my college lectures at home with some cheesy poofs, a beer, in my underwear while my girlfriend is giving me a hummer I would be more apt to go to class and pay attention. I could do that with a real science channel.

  14. Linux - Minix Connection on SCO's Plan Examined · · Score: 0

The tree that everyone has that links Linux and Minix is a hot topic. There is an argument for the connection and against the connection on the UNIX distribution tree.

    For the connection:
Linus did not like Minix, which is the Unix he was using when he wrote Linux with his friends. Linus no doubt studied Minix when he was in college and Minix is one of the few Unix (not true Unix) variations that is taught with published code (as of 1991). Minix was no doubt the inspiration for Linux 1.0.

    Against the Connection:
Due to the licensing restrictions of Minix (you cannot redistribute any derived work) Linus had to do a clean room implementation with no Minix derived code. Linux is a Monolithic Kernel and Minix is a Micro Kernel. This was no doubt done do to ease of code writing, but Linus and the Minix guy have volumes of arguments about what is better. This split is the key reason that Linux is not derived or a child on the tree of Unix from Minix.

If you have some to add or correct, feel free. It has been 5 years since I was in OS classes and I knew every detail about the arguments between Linus and the Minix guy.

Casinos would not make money if they let card counters play blackjack because counters are the only gamblers that are not cheating and can make money no matter what you do to the cards (except a continuous shuffler is used).
