Come on now Salsa is not easy to learn. It's statements like that which put people off when they've been taking classes for two or three months and find they still struggle with the basics. "It's easy to learn but I can't do it, what is wrong with me?" and they give up.

Well-motivated ladies can get to "OK" in about six months, guys double that.

  8. I'm not convinced about net-based tracking system on Adeona Warns of Instability; OpenDHT Mothballed · · Score: 2, Interesting

The functionality depends upon the thief being unaware that information from the laptop is being transmitted somewhere and thus could give away information revealing the theft. If the thief knew about the client then they would of course find a way to disable it before attaching to a network.

With the current state of technology it's credible that a thief would steal the laptop, connect to the internet, then hopefully get caught. But what if laptops routinely had a GPS receiver onboard, and possibly also a GSM/UMTS modem? At that point it would become widely known by even the dumbest thieves that "laptops are trackable when you turn them on" and an arms race would ensue. The distributed tracking system would no longer be any good though

I already have a mobile phone with onboard GPS and there is an app which at power-on can auto-send a GSM text message containing the phone's detail to a pre-specified number. This is not defeated by changing the SIM card.

I really wanted to have Linux on my Acer Aspire One but the struggle was just too much. I spent days then gave up with Linpus, then tried again unsuccessfully with eeebuntu. It's now got Windows 7 and runs fine.

Is it too much to want to close the lid on a netbook and then everything to come back again when I open it? And to get a bluetooth 3G modem connection without huge messing about?

How do you live like this? Serious question. I mean you are at continuous risk of dangerous insect attack? 12. It's not that bad a place on Quebec Says 'Non' To English-Only Video Games · · Score: 1

I'm English so I speak slow stuttery French (England is about 20 miles from France.) I've been to Quebec a few times (ski-ing or on business) and whenever I try my French on the locals they tolerate me for a short time but then voluntarily switch to English just to speed things up.

Crucially though I've run into plenty of people who honestly don't speak English at all. Usually this is at the financially poorer end of the scale like people who serve me in Wal-Mart. So it could be that protecting those people is the real intent of these weird laws even if it fails in practice.

  23. Make sure the numbers add up on Six Questions To Ask Before Telecommuting · · Score: 1

When you're looking at how much you save on travel don't forget to factor in the less-visible costs of working at home. To begin with heating and lighting costs are coming out of your pocket, also you'll be needing a home office so you are effectively paying the same rent/mortgage but for a smaller living space. Plenty more small expenses that soon add up. Maybe there are the intangible benefits of being with your dog all day but make sure you do the numbers to make sure you are not losing out financially. That's why you have a job in the first place isn't it.

I can work from wherever I want but I choose to make the short journey to the office every day - home is home for me and I want to relax not work. I can see how my attitude might change though if I were faced with a long commute.
