    You can't blame Valve for Nvidia's problems. There's a known issue here, and they've said even with the NVIDIA-SUPPLIED optimizations, it doesn't run the way they'd really like it to. This is a fault in the card, not the software.

    The first thing *I* would do is to have a talk with the legal department at your office, or a lawyer under retention for the company. Find out what their official stance is on this license before making any solid decisions.

    You don't want to sign paperwork if you're not sure of the consequences, but you don't want to overreact either. Let a legal expert determine if the risk is real.

    I switched almost entirely from Tom's Hardware to Anandtech because of the bias. After seeing article after article of biased reporting, I finally came to my senses after reading an article about a year ago where the facts (and graphs) went completely against the conclusion in the article.

    There are definitely a few reporters over there that should be canned for not doing their work right.

    Ergh.. lost my first post to the 2-minute wait. Let's try that again.

    Yeah, and the only games that ever make it onto the demo kiosks are the really big titles. Metroid Fusion? Castlevania? Like I really needed to play them to know they were going to be an immediate grab for my collection.

    By the way, nice link-- being a huge Rockman fan myself, I'm going to go sign that right now.

    My sympathies. This is precisely the problem-- and for those who say "read the reviews" you get cases like the recent pulled review of Savage on Gamespot..

    The consumer really CAN'T win in this case.

    Not always possible. Many games don't have a demo at all, and those that do don't always have accurate demos. It took Epic two or more months to release an updated demo of UT2K3 that accurately represented the final product instead of being the pre-release open beta.

    Then you've got console games, where demos are only obtained through magazines and are often inaccurate as well because they're 6-month-old betas in many cases.

    Every store I've been to in the past.. oh.. five or six years has had a exchange-only-on-open-box policy, except on games like Everquest or Planetside where the box pretty much says no resale-- those games I can't return if the box has been opened since they can't rewrap the box and resell it.

    I'm guessing that's pretty much the standard everywhere in the USA at the very least. It can be frustrating when you buy a complete dud...

    Well, with the speed increase naturally comes heat increases. I'm thinking we're rapidly reaching the point where we're going to be having to use mandatory water cooling or air conditioning-- the whole design will be generating too much heat to be usable otherwise.

    Of course, that'll require a complete redesign of the case scheme for airflow, but BTX might just be up to the task.

    Hey, I didn't exactly say OS/2 was better, now did I? You'll notice there's no note of Linux there, either, or BSD. So, your response is even MORE knee-jerk and "pathetic" under the circumstances.

    Not every device needs to be based on PC (PC being a generic term here) architecture. In fact, it's an inherent security liability in that it makes the device more complex in this case, and adds a lot of additional points of failure. The fact that Windows adds even more atop this.. well, now we've reached my original point.

    I think what everyone missed was the implicit "in general" in the thread. Yes, these kids were old enough to know better, but the statement I was replying to was:

    "I'm sorry, maybe I'm just cold hearted, but I strongly believe that no human being should have to be told to NOT fire a firearm at another non-aggressive human being. If they DO have to be told, they deserve to either be put away or put down."

    A rather general statement in itself.

    Now watch, we'll see the first magnetic card buffer overflow exploit for free cash.

    You walk up to an ATM at 2AM (from the side, of course-- keep out of the camera's line of sight), put a black jacket over the camera port, then swipe a magnetic card through the system that overflows a buffer and runs arbitrary code to dispense free cash.

    Yeah, brilliant idea, guys. Choose the OS that's been hit most frequently with this sort of abuse in the past. Exploits are definitely going to be possible, considering the inherent issues of the underlying OS.

    Just as bad, how about reliability? We're going to see tons of bluescreened ATMs. I've already seen a few Windows ATMs in the past, and I could always tell them by the bluescreens they inevitably have.

    Sure. First thing comes to mind for me is that you can get decent generic keyboards with all the standard keys and none of the excess for anywhere from $3-15 USD. (I know $3 sounds low, but I had a local computer shop that really was selling decent keyboards and mice that cheap.)

    Well, it's because past history with Microsoft shows a very definite trend of Microsoft making proclaimations like this, then subtly slipping in things that completely change the nature of the situation. For instance, Microsoft Office has perverted XML and RTF under the name of "open standards".

    The old saying of once bitten twice wary still applies. In general, we refuse to take Gates at face value and continue to look for the fine print, but it would be nice if the guy would actually change his ways...

    I'm going to respectfully disagree. I believe children need to be told once, twice, however many times it takes for it to sink in. It's not immediately obvious to a kid that guns kill permanently.

    However, I do agree that it is the parents' responsibility to teach their children, and that by having failed to do so, the parents should be the ones held responsible along with their children.

    Now, if I understand the theory of SSDs correctly.. SSDs were moderately common back in the mid-80s in the form of Hard Cards, expansion cards that acted as disk drives but used memory chips. The largest I ever saw of these was 20MB, and I've always wondered from time to time if the technology would still hold up today with modern memory architecture. It would probably be more expensive, but I do have to wonder at what kind of performance such a drive system would use.

    Alright, but how many consumer phones are also a breeding ground for this sort of thing now? I'm sure the bacteria spread fairly quickly, so I have to wonder. Also, how would a consumer clean such an infected phone without destroying it?

    I really can't agree. I've been to Kuro a few times, and each time I'm startled by a system that seems to be filled with even MORE junk and trolling than Slashdot. I really don't see how people can see the site as being that much "cleaner".. but, that's just my own experience.

    Eight megabits; the largest NES game I'm aware of is Kirby's Adventure, which is a full megabyte IIRC.
