    Sigh. Where the fuck did that come from? All I'm saying is that I didn't pay for a time sharing system cause I have no good damn use for one. I want a computer for me, not anyone else, just me. That's what I want when I buy a "personal" computer. So when it says "you will need to enter the administrator password" I'm gunna have to ask "what fucking administrator?! This is _my_ computer. I'm not some corporate drone, I'm sitting in my own house already." Just like when the computer says to me "access denied". What? You are denying me access? Who's computer do you think you are? It's not my system design, it's Denise Richie's system design and it has no place on my home machine as it was made for a completely different environment. If you're gunna make stupid design decisions (like trying to palm off a time sharing operating system as a desktop operating system) then you can at least have the common courtesy to hide your mistakes from the user. Asking the sole user of a desktop operating system to enter a password (basically ever) is not only stupid, it is insulting.

    What is the point? It's a single user machine, why does it need security? If we're talking about protecting the user from his programs then what we need is a capabilities system that is intimately tweakable and preferably has unlimited undo accessible from a global event log.

    Call him what he is, a copyright violator. If Microsoft wants to sue the kid for violating their copyright then that's their business but it is hardly anyone else's duty or responsibility to report him to Microsoft (unless you're a shareholder I can hardly see why you would even be interested). Trueth is, they're not going to sue him and, even if they did, they would probably lose or be fined for bringing a frivilous lawsuit (in states that care about wasting the court's time).

    Man, you just dont get it do ya? I can do each and every one of those things that you have just said and in none of those cases would I be charged with theft. Not one! Try to get with the program sunshine. When they pass laws that say you can be burned at the stake for copyright violation it's idiots like you who will be standing there saying "yer, well they're thieves right?" Excluding the very dubious NET act, copyright violation isn't even a criminal matter, it's civil. So yes, there is a big god damn difference between copying and theft and if you can see that then I guess Jack Valenti's job is done. Sheesh.

    I tell ya, criminals of the world should form a union and crack down on this watered down version of the word thief. He didn't steal shit. He copied display software onto his iPod. Big fucking deal. The store still has their copy, which they probably didn't pay for anyways. He's a kid, he never would have bought Office anyways. It is totally inappropriate to associate this with shop lifting. The CompUSA dude was probably looking at this narq blankly because he didn't give a shit. Why should he care?     The judge in this case is ill qualified to sit it, plain and simple. she seemed to think "linking" code was analogous to hyperlinks on the web, and that a single package was like a single icon you would click on on the desktop. This is incompitence. As I wouldn't hire a lawyer who didn't understand the specifics of tech law I shouldn't have to put up with a judge who doesn't understand the specifics of tech law. How can justice be served when we're trying to have sophisticated conversations about what is legal and what is not legal and the judge is sitting there saying "what's a binary?"

    Just because some lawyer doesn't know what an emulator is doesn't mean you should go around repeating him. It's a piece of interoperable software man, there's no emulation involved. The one byte crack is certainly circumvention, but that's not bnet, that's Warforge, and as for ignoring the CD-KEY, what else could they possibly do? They dont have the algorithm to authenticate it. Personally I'm against the whole thing. The only reason bnet is/was a successful open source project is because it is largely trivial. If they sat down and tried to write their own game the project would have blown appart (or stagnated significantly like the Freecraft project - which anyone who has actually used the game and not just read the Sourceforge stats will tell you is the case).

    Get sued random small ass person who has code under the GPL. Get the GPL invalidated. Shut down all the millions of free software projects that make use of the GPL. Hell, forget Microsoft, how do we know that Theo da Raadt or some other cat stroking evil genius isn't gunna do it (no offense Theo). If the GPL is declared invalid then surely you have to be wrong about this whole "no rights to distribute at all" stuff. Surely 99% of people using the GPL would immediately issue statements saying in essence that they are switching to a BSD license. Ahhh, fun with copyright law.

    It should be noted that I have a 3 month interest free period... So I aint paying shit in the way of interest if I pay it off within 3 months. Also they make it excessively difficult to pay that $20 a month from a foreign country, which is where I am 99% of the time.

    I dont live at my billing address anymore and really isn't it in their interests if I take as long as possible to pay that money? You know what they do when I miss a payment, they charge me $20! I guess the logic must be "Hey, he cant afford to pay this month, better make him owe more!" If you're one dollar in debit and dont pay for 6 months you are now $121 in debit. Great!

    that's what pisses me off about credit cards. It's CREDIT ok? What do I have to pay $20 a month? Know how I finally solved this? Every month I charge $20 to my credit card and dump it into my savings account, then 5 days before the end of the month I put it back onto the card. Now they're happy. Why? I dont get it. It's obsurd shit like that which really makes you wonder if there is anyone minding the store at credit card companies.

    I would just like to express my approval with the recent action taken by Blizzard to defend its online key verification system. It is a shame that other gaming companies are not so willing to shut down third party servers such as the makers of Ultima Online.

    I know it's a strange term, but generally a whitehat finding a bug doesn't do it all alone. They do it with the help of others. So if I'm looking at a bit of code and see something that looks poorly coded, am I still permitted to go post on a public mailing list "hey, this kinda looks broken, someone wanna take a look at it?" or is that against the draft (and as such I'll be labeled as "malicious"). If I happen to be looking at a config file or a protocol specification and notice that the design seems to have an inherent security flaw (trusting user data for example), am I permitted to talk about it publically, or as a "reporter" am I required to go look at every product that implements that standard and report my findings only to the vendor of those products. I suppose all these questions will get sorted out in the wash eventually.
