I just spent about 1/2 hour video chatting with a friend after clicking on his Google Chat video icon in iChat. Hm, that is a rather unweildy phrase. What do you call chatting with someone in iChat via Jabber on Google's Server? how about iGoogleChat?:-)
Well then, I clicked on the video icon in my iGoogleChat buddy list to start a video chat with my friend, and it worked just fine. User experience and video qualkity were the same as "native iChat". Not sure who's "fault" this is -- iChat for managing to send video presence info through Jabber, or Jabber for supporting video presence. Whoever is responsible though: well done.
"Pseudo-Science"? I'm sorry, but as soon as I saw the word "Batman", I'd understand completely where the article was coming from. "Pseudo-Science" is reserved for that which seeks to deceive the reader. Unless you really think there *is* a Batman, this does not qualify for that term.

I've noticed that, aside from those obnoxious films with ads before the main menu, simply pressing the "play" button when the main menu comes up usually starts the movie.
Is there a DVD player with auto-play as a feature? That would be cool.
I really like Apple's iChat 'solution' but it simply doesn't play well with others which makes it worthless (unless everyone you know owns a mac... which they inevitably don't)
Another problem is that "death" isn't permanent. Indeed, some people can only seed at certain times (e.g. at night), so the torrent can appear dead during the day and have 3 seeds at night.
I would say that a torrent that has had zero seeds for less than 24 hours isn't dead, just "restin', pining for the fjords". After, say, 72 hours, I think you can actually call it dead.
This way of measuring productivity is simply wrong
What would you recommend as a new way of measuring productivity? Page rank in Google Scholar?
This is not a flip question, I'm wondering if this could really be a valid metric. Of course, it would be subject to the same scams to which Google page ranking has already been subject.
If you increase the surface-area-to-volume ration by orders of magnitude like that, most of it will burn up in the atmosphere and a significantly smaller mass will actually hit the ground.
Now, the stuff that burns up might still cause a lot of smoke and dust -- that would be interesting to check out -- but it would be nothing compared to a giga-ton explosion at ground level.
I was really, really disappointed that there was no multiplayer. I even bought the game, installed it and played for a few days before a friedn of mine (Hi Iain!) alerted me to the fact that there was no multiplayer element. I was agast! How could any modern first person shooter **not** have multiplayer?
I can only conclude that they're either brain dead, or it will be made available, perhaps in this "surprise". But I'm not holding my breath. There have been several brain deaths like this in the games industry recently.
1) It's unsafe to all the other things (including people) to leave unneeded space junk up there.
[..]
3) Moving it then requires keeping it in place and also repairing it, if it's to be useful.
I thought a LaGrange point was gravitationally stable, requiring no "keeping it in place" whatsoever. If that's so, it would certainly not be "unsafe to all the other things".
The bit about population control is bogus. Look at the world today. "First world" countries, who have the most food, have the lowest population expansion. Indeed, it is negative, the population is falling. So "any economist" will NOT agree with your premise.
Secondly, if corporations try to DRM this stuff, I would imagine we would have Open Source items in no time.
The upshot of all this would be that only purely intellectual work -- designing new stuff -- would be valued. Surely even service work would disappear once we achieve Robot Domination of that sector.
CBC Radio has always been ahead of the rest of CBC in terms of technology. They've been making one of my favorite radio science shows, Quirks and Quarks available in mp3 format for years. It's been available in Ogg since September 2002. I think they were broadcasting in stereo well before CBC Television, too.
Apple doesn't really have a competitor in the Macintosh market. In the Windows world, Dell competes against HP who competes against Gateway who competes against Joe Schmoe Computers etc.
There is no "Windows world", there is only the real world. Who competes with Microsoft's OS? Apple does, with MacOS. So do the various Linux and BSD vendors.
On the hardware side, Apple competes with Dell, Compaq/HP, Gateway and the rest. On top of that, Apple also competes with Adobe (and others) for application software revenue.
So, rather than competing with nobody, it looks like Apple is competing with *everbody*.
That sail would have to be pretty massive, like the mass of a planet, in order to counteract years of acceleration so you could push it away from yourself to slow down
100 grams is not massive enough to slow you down.
Of course, a high-mass solar sail is a waste, as it would have an extremely low acceleration. Probably faster to get out and push.
Hmm, along the lines of SETI@Home, we could ask everyone to point a $3 laser pen at a solar sail to help it go faster. The difference in acceleration could even be measured and posted to a website, live. Hah!
Actually, Roxio is a spin-off company from Adaptec. All of the initial employees were Adaptec staff. So there are a large number of people who have been through the (soon to be) three different company names.
What I want to know is whether Sonic was smart enough to grab the "Roxio" brand name along with the software?
I would earnestly hope that this or any other Presidential administration would have 'total control' over how its employees were spending their budgets. Wouldn't you?
Don't you want some control over how your employees -- the President, Congress and Senate -- are spending their budgets?

Maybe.. we could just use a grey font or a reduced type size?
Isn't about time to try some sort of spinning assembly, perhaps only part-time, just to regain some bone mass?
I would say that the bandwidth used for blog RSS feeds pales in comparison to that used for downloading TV shows these days.

8. Your IP gets banned.

Not so. Windows AIM users can video chat with OSX iChat users.

And, of course, the patent-holder for fusion would be Sun.

Right, so now that Half-Life 2 Deathmatch has been relelased, I'll shut up now.

Doom 3 comes to mind. :-/

Could the frequency being broadcast have a correlation to the damage? Perhaps we are more vulnerable to AM frequencies than cell phone frequenncies?
