"is that they are publishing/designer people, and all their choices reflect that. one major example they chose amiga over commodore 64."
I think that Apple have seven spots on the list proves it better.
From the article: "The Apple II may not have been the first personal computer, but it was the spark that ignited the personal computing industry."
Its one of the computers that ignited it, there are other more important contributors then the ridiculs overpriced (at release US$1298) Apple II. For example the VIC 20, C64, TRS 81 and the Sinclair Spectrum.
He argues that competition in this case is something that was positive for the newton (no competition) and negative for the iPhone.
Its the other way around, with Newton apple had to educate a market, in this case everybody knows what a cell phone is, and are looking for the next cool thing.
I think the biggest blunder is to lock it to a certain carrier.
"but just once I'd like to see them actually create something original"
I think your out of line here...there is allot going on in Redmon that must be a "first"...just check these fine examples, no prior art here (no "post art" either)!
Sadly, not much have happned on the usability front comparing the average form based input page and the 3270 terminal system anon. 1972. Chances are that people is going to be fed up with subpar performacne and cluncky interfaces and head back to the "fat client".
Will probably be a hit among smaller companies that can stand the fact that their data will be stored elsewhere, and possible never be deleted.
As I see that it would be hard for Enterprises, of any moderate size, to store any remotly sensitive data on googles disks. In their case it would mostly be used as a way to work together, and then one might ask if gotomeeting or any other internet meeting service + openoffice/office/staroffice is a better solution. I guess time will tell...
When we started to grow and get more customers, we needed a new system to handle everything from bugs, support requests and personal TODO lists. We searched and evaluated allot of these systems, we finaly settled for Fogbugz, the combination of features/price was right.
How ever came up with the respons at Linden Labs should get a bonus, turing something that would have been negative news into something both funny, positive and yet still manage to defened their tradmark.
This is just speculation, but I'm pretty sure that what they are aming for is administrative power of what gets released and whats not. Just like Nindtendo/Sony/MS have a firm grip over what gets published for their (gaming) hardware.
After all, the hardware is a one time fee, controling the software sales (earning royalties on everything sold for the device) is the big revenue stream.
"key optimizations" as you mention might be important for your Oracle database to run.
Game code is written in a totally different way (should be at least) , often are out-of-order exections a road block for game developers rather then a help.
What you are doing is great and shows that this issue is something that we as private citizens can do something about, if we just cared.
In addition to what you wrote I would urge everybody to ask their electric provider how they produce the energy you buy and look around for companies in the grid that produces energy in a sustainable way.
The Swedish goverment have stated that the nation should be oil independant/free by 2020 (we do not have any indigenous oil production). Big words, but I really see allot of alternative energy (wind, solar, wave etc) companies starting up here in Sweden. E85 fuel cars (Saab BioPower, Volvo FlexiFule) have become very popular just the last year and a allot of people is investing in geothermal heating system.
"I wonder, though, whether this makes the difference."
They control the hardware, they have less then 20 or so different configuration that can run their OS. It is one thing that makes life allot easier for Apple.
"Part of me is cringing from sticer shock but realistically I know that in a few years they'll be in the sub $1.00 range when other manufacturers figure out how to make them"
I want to think the same thing, that the media will eventually drop to the same price tag. But I think that the climate is a bit different now, with the whole circus around filesharing etc.
The creepy thing is (if I'm not missinformd) is that the big movie/record companies is involved in these new format in a whole new way then the previous formats (CD,DVD).
I dont know, but I got a hunch that they are going try to keep the prices for raw media up. It will of course fail since the sales wont be the same, but I'm pretty sure that they will try.

"and be able to break into computers connected to the Internet without much effort"
Didnt know that spoofing an IP what all it took to break into a computer.....
Sounds abit like Adobe Apollo http://labs.adobe.com/wiki/index.php/Apollo
Sorry to crash the party but you have to fix Mars magnetosphere first....
Georges Lemaitre (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Georges_Lemaitre/ was a priest for example. I do not see a problem between faith and science, each have a valid context.

Its not an PHP/MySQL solution, but that was not an important parameter for us.

How do you know the machine your typing on isnt replaced with one thats built for harvesting your passwords ?
omg!, its an application suit with a single sign, stop elevating it to such a god like stature....

We will also add support for this in INM if possible.
"which will support future visits to Mars"
Why in the name of God do we go to the Moon first if what we really want is to go to Mars ?
Robert Zubrin have written an excellent book on the subject, more info here:
