    Unless the bootable NIC cards become standard in their machines. Otherwise many of us will still need a boot disk to image/ghost machines. I actually prefer floppies to bootable CD's for this purpose. CD-burners would also have to become standard for laptop users, no more saving to floppy! The cost is minimal and a floppy can take much more abuse than a CD can!

    I am sharing my connection with 4 other machines in the house. There is no way that dial up would compete in a house with 2 adults and two teenagers sharing a connection!

    Although I was with a local ISP, the cost of the 2nd phone line was $25.00 and my ISP was $15.00. Broadband through the cable company was $40.00 so it was a complete wash for a huge increase over 56k, why would I want to stay on dialup? They can thank all the baby bells for not wanting to go the "last mile" to give people a choice of providers.

    Because at the rate IT firms close and layoff, we will have to keep working! Not all companies offer any retirement benefits at all. We will just have to keep on working, and do some smart investing if possible!

    Could this be because of the huge numbers of layoffs since the dot-bomb explosion? There are less people being paid to maintain and monitor the data, hence rendering it obsolete. Also, I am sure there are people who "maintain" to just keep the site alive and not actually doing anything as far a changing it since in most cases, it was not their site originally.

    How would you load an OS on a blank drive if system does not boot from CD? Not everyone has a second system to slave the drive into to copy the data. Furthermore, wouldn't that render thousands of "restore" disks useless that ship with new systems? Most operating systems give you the option of a recovery disk in the event of system failure, what would be the replacement? I don't think the lowly floppy is the culprit for PC makers losing money!

    Since a large number of Comcast's user rent their modems, Comcast has the ability to throttle them back. Why not identify the "hogs" and simply throttle their modems back. Or is this a way to allow them to raise prices AND throttle back service?

    I've gotten to the point that I don't even have Real's products installed on my systems anymore. The only way they creep in is that they are bundled with Netscape. At least I can uninstall in most cases. And with P2P sharing I can usually find the same thing in Mpg,AVI, or MP3 anyway so I havent felt that I am losing anything except the annoyances that some with Real products.

    Is this an instance where the government is scared of technology sipmly because they don't get a piece of the pie? You can look anywhere and get stereos which allow you to record tapes from the radio, copy tapes, cd to tape, and even radio to cd!!! You have dual deck VCR's , VCR/DVD combos, and no one is shutting down the manufacturers? No one has mentioned that these devices essentially perform the same function!!!! However, there are taxes paid on theses items, so that makes them ok? just my $0.02!!

    When my cable modem was delivered, they actually recommended use of the Linksys boxes which perform the same way, but not as good as a pure linux box. It uses NAT to provide firewall type protection, does this mean linksys and other manufacturers may begin to lose business? I think they will first go by the amount of traffic generated and work their way down.
