    OSS in the server room is very different from OSS on the desktop. It folks tend to be educated, and PHB look at the bottom line.

    Oracle is not as established as MS. They even note this. That is why they are trying to pull an IBM and turn themselves into a service company, not a DB company. What they sell is support. DB2 has just as strong a foothold.

    You can't put aside the technical considerations. This isn't about the desktop and perception. This is about the server room and services. All there is here are the technical considerations.

    And SQL server has never been a threat to oracle. Comoditization of the market is their onl;y real threat.

    FYI:
    eRServer has fail over of the master to the primary slave, which makes it just fine for HA applications

    Replication in postgres is still quite alive. The website is dead, but the mailing list and development is pretty active.

    They were trying to get replication code into the main line 7.4, but that got pushed back. However people are still hgacking away at it.

    I think it will be interesting when these thing are integrated into systems like Gibson's vr glasses in Virtual Light. Walk around walmart and see the REAL facts on a product as you look at it. Or personal data and info about people you meet. But I really like the idea of a preference based system. ie. "When I'm shopping i'd like to use the Eco Effect plugin, while dirving around twon however, I'd like the Driving Record indicator showing the number of tickets, DUI's and accedients of the car in for ont of me. "

    I think they are just going to kill their retail channels. BestBuy, Virgin etc, not their boxed version. Why sped all this money on boxes sent to stores when most of their purcheses go through their site. I always go straight through them. There isn't a store for 80+ miles around here that sells a box.

    Glad to hear it, 'cause that's how I show my support. By making my company buy every release, and the professional edition at that. I just wish you still gave out hats, mine are starting to show their age.

    I find that as I get older, I'm not quite as willing to hookup the stimulates as I was. I'm a little more health conscious than I used to be. Too many penguin mints and jolt chasers make me a bit fatter than they used to. This makes me a little less likely, not to mention more difficult, for me to step into the ZONE. It can and still will be done, but not at the drop of a hat, only after the design is done.

    I agree, that has driven me nuts. I've devloped methods of work, that depend on things like that, and gnome 2.2 killed my productivty. I never really understood the arguments for switiching from sawfish, it seemed to work really well. I would have atleast waited till all of the functionality was the re before switiching.

    I've found that the way to deal with the focus issue is to click and hold on the desired task in the task manager which will cause the window to popup, and while still holding the mouse button down go oever to the desired window.

    I was hoping that XD2 would have an upgrade to Metacity. Nope same crap. But I wouldn't call it any less flexible. After a days worth of use, id say it'
    s worth the 300MB download. Galeon sux though. yeah it's light weight, but they haven't kept up with mozilla development. No more groups and stuff.

    The only problem I see, is that metacity still doesn't understand xinerama, and has the most screwed up focusing problems. Where when one windo gets focus it jumps to the front, even when the settings say otherwise.

    Do none of you write checks anymore? You know, for like the small asian grciery store that won't take plastic? Bills and such. I was always under the impression that cursive was what you were supposed to use for the written amount. Since it's a little harder to forge than block print.

    There are a few things that'd I'd like to see, and the main one is the 2.6 kernel. I'd like to know if once the kernel is stable (hopefully in 5 yrs :) that it will be distributed with advanced server. It seems like a major version jump would be required for something like that. I don't think they want to back port all of the new features.

    I've never even heard of her and never really expect to see anything else from her. However, I think her story has a right to be posted here, If only because she is a part of "Geek" culture. Even if it is in the same regards as goatse.cx.

    The current State of the DI sounds like the early 90's IBM. Organized in a very heirarchical fasion, that prevents it from adapting to new dynamics in the market. Perhaps they should look to the private sector companies that managed to adapt well to the current times.

    I think you're refering to the late 80's. Whereas we are discussing the atri generation here, when the only thing on cable was HBO and an atari was something that on;y your neighbor had. VCR's were also something only other people had. Saturday mornings were the only time that a kid had something worth watching. Unless ofcourse smokey and he bandit happened to be show on tv one nite. TV really only sonsisted of Shooting JR and boring Presidential speeches made in front of horid harvest gold curtains.

    There have been newer GOOD! cartoons. I thought the animainiacs were great. Almost a rebirth of the the classic cartoons, as well as educational. I just don't know what happened to them.

    The classics wern't so great. I got bored with bugs bunny, he was an asshole. Plus at some point I realised that I had seen all of the plenty times before. Bulwinkle rocked and so did scobby doo esp when they had guess stars on like the harlem globe trotters...:)

    I wrote a jdbc wrapper that allowed me to use multiple jdbc drivers simultaneously. This seems ver y very similar. The load balancing was nice. But the replication really fely like it should be down at the db level, and not at the driver level. Syncing to databases after one went down was a pain.
    Spliting up tables across db's seems a little rough, esp since you have to run the query on more than one db and then merge the results into a single result set. This means that you have to do your own sort. It gets even more fun if you use limit and offset in your query. It just gets wierd after a while. I say wait for postgres-R, it'll be much more of a kick in the pants for Oracle.

    They say this is to block spam, but it's to make everyone use there local ISP mail realy so that they have known places to put carnivore. Take earthlink for example. Won't let you run your own mail server.

    Why, 'because if your forced to use their mail-realy, they can run carinvore in one location, and scan a huge number of traffic, that's garenteed to be email.

    This strikes me as capping the other end as well. The only way for you to get your email out would be using your ISP's mail relay.

    ps.
    what happens if your ISP has DSL in it's name...?

    Awfully convenient don't you think, that an UN-FIXABLE bug shows up in NT 4.0 right before 2003 server goes gold. Seems a little toooooo convenient to me.

    Next thing ya know MS is going to tell us they didn't have anything to do with removing dividend taxes right after they started paying them.
