With a bit of creative modding, old laptops make great wall-mounted digital photo frames, with more interesting possibilities than the dedicated ones you can buy these days.

Low-powered home audio client. Put one in every room you want music in, and dump Amarok on them. With the lower power consumption than desktops, you could probably afford to keep them on 24/7.

Datalogger/server. Have one in the basement logging your power usage/temperature sensors/whatever about your house.

Uh, I think that would be a really bad idea. It takes a lot of energy to instantly heat water and, while old HWCs are inefficient, modern ones are much better. You can choose any (or all) of wetbacks, heat pumps or solar heaters to plug into your modern cylinders and get better energy efficiency than what any instant heater can provide.

Of course there is a usage point at which keeping water warm becomes less economical, but if you use more than a couple of litres a day then you're better off with a cylinder.

Not so much these days. A lot of hard drive use glass platters now. Much better temperature stability and, as it turns out, breakability.

For me the procedure is thus:

    Undo hard drive screws
Go out back door into alleyway carrying freshly opened drive, brush & shovel and $10 hammer
    Place hard drive on ground
Tap hard drive with hammer at arms length
    Look away
    Wallop hard drive with hammer
Gather up 1mm shards of glass with brush and shovel
Dump now platterless disk in dumpster along with contents of brush and shovel

Why should it be up to the manufacturers to write drivers for their hardware? If they release the specs, then the community of FOSS developers can most likely make better drivers than most hardware OEMs. And without nefarious licensing terms that restrict us packaging them however we want.
