    A problem with standby in CRT tellys is that they often employ a small heater around the electron tubes to reduce startup time. This would draw perhaps 20W when in standby.

    Most of the energy consumed by an LED circuit is dissipated as heat in the current-limiting resistor. You could replace that resistor in each of those LEDs with a CMOS 555 chip and Pulse-width-modulate them at a high frequency. Same apparent brightness, and very little energy wasted.

    Of course that's for old sooks. Speaking for myself, I just replace all my status LEDs with 3W Crees. If a disk on my server is swapping, dammit, I want to know 3 floors up!

    I administer debian boxes, and have done so since 2001. I keep up to date with debian news, and frequent sites such as debianadministration.org and Planet Debian.

    This is the very first I have ever heard of a repository called 'volatile'.

    I now feel kind of silly.

    Tzdata isn't the only affected package.

    PHP keeps its time zone information internally, and of course there isn't a debian update for it so you may need to recompile with a new timezonedb.h

    So if you have a web server, get cracking!

    No, you see Security would be the right place for it. Given that nobody has ever heard of Debian Volatile, Security is the logical place for critical time-sensitive updates. And it is a security problem. Imagine if I had a cron job set to close my bank vault at 4:30pm but it instead stays open till 5:30.

    It's only wasted power if you don't want the heat. If you live in a cold climate you've got yourself a perfect small heater with a COP of 1. So your thermostat-controlled heater won't need to work quite as hard to maintain your room at the target temperature, so you break even energy-wise and effectively get your F@H flops for free.

    Of course if you're in a hot climate and want to cool the room, well the opposite is true. You're wasting more power (200W to do the F@H work, and 200W/COP for the A/C unit to shift the heat out of your room).

    That just isn't true. Some catholic sects do hold the whole "sexual activity is solely for procreation" mantra based on a dodgy interpretation of one scripture, but I don't know anyone (and I know a lot of pro-lifers) who has claimed that sperm should be classed as human. Did you miss part of your biology classes, perhaps? A zygote is a different story, and is subject to more debate (all the genetic material is there, but there's no brain to speak of, but does a brain determine intrinsic value, etc).
