A problem with standby in CRT tellys is that they often employ a small heater around the electron tubes to reduce startup time. This would draw perhaps 20W when in standby.
Most of the energy consumed by an LED circuit is dissipated as heat in the current-limiting resistor. You could replace that resistor in each of those LEDs with a CMOS 555 chip and Pulse-width-modulate them at a high frequency. Same apparent brightness, and very little energy wasted.
Of course that's for old sooks. Speaking for myself, I just replace all my status LEDs with 3W Crees. If a disk on my server is swapping, dammit, I want to know 3 floors up!
I administer debian boxes, and have done so since 2001. I keep up to date with debian news, and frequent sites such as debianadministration.org and Planet Debian.
This is the very first I have ever heard of a repository called 'volatile'.
No, you see Security would be the right place for it. Given that nobody has ever heard of Debian Volatile, Security is the logical place for critical time-sensitive updates. And it is a security problem. Imagine if I had a cron job set to close my bank vault at 4:30pm but it instead stays open till 5:30.
OEM's can choose to bundle Linux, or OSX (oops, Apple doesn't allow that, but hey you can buy their computer too) any other OS that they want.
No, they can't. Not without losing their MS reseller status.
It's not Microsoft dictating what the OEM's use
Yes, it is.
(this was ruled by the DOJ over a decade ago).
The DOJ gave a ruling, and then utterly failed to enforce it.
The choice is there. As a libertarian I can't stand all of this rediculous government involvement in a situation where the free market is obivously working.
Yes, those stupid Boston cops. I mean, who wouldn't see the humour in littering the streets with a whole lot of boards with flashing lights depicting characters from an obscure television series that no one over 25 watches, involving talking milkshakes.
Next time let's tape a bunch of red candles together and tie them to a clock.
It's only wasted power if you don't want the heat. If you live in a cold climate you've got yourself a perfect small heater with a COP of 1. So your thermostat-controlled heater won't need to work quite as hard to maintain your room at the target temperature, so you break even energy-wise and effectively get your F@H flops for free.
Of course if you're in a hot climate and want to cool the room, well the opposite is true. You're wasting more power (200W to do the F@H work, and 200W/COP for the A/C unit to shift the heat out of your room).
Yes, I capitalised both my quantities (g and m) in an attempt to make it a bit more readable. It obviously failed.
As a side-note, as I clicked 'submit' I thought to myself "I bet some smart-arsed physics nazi is going to dress me down for bad notation". Congratulations:)
Because that's what weight means in real life. The term has been hijacked by scientists so they can sound clever when they correct people for using the "wrong" term.
The point I'm getting is that all of you pro-life wackos want to drive us towards a Monty Python "Every Sperm is Sacred" world and ordinary people see through your lies and bullshit.
Strawman.
That just isn't true. Some catholic sects do hold the whole "sexual activity is solely for procreation" mantra based on a dodgy interpretation of one scripture, but I don't know anyone (and I know a lot of pro-lifers) who has claimed that sperm should be classed as human. Did you miss part of your biology classes, perhaps? A zygote is a different story, and is subject to more debate (all the genetic material is there, but there's no brain to speak of, but does a brain determine intrinsic value, etc).
Just so long as we don't have to pronounce 'solder' so that it rhymes with 'fodder'.
(Hint: it's supposed to rhyme with 'older')
YEAH BT NU 1S R BEN UZD EVRY DAY TO AIGHT

You mean that repo that absolutely nobody knows about?
Until now.
The one that isn't included in any distro's sources.list?

5 ends in a 5.

I now feel kind of silly.
Tzdata isn't the only affected package.
PHP keeps its time zone information internally, and of course there isn't a debian update for it so you may need to recompile with a new timezonedb.h
So if you have a web server, get cracking!

Are you sure about that?
Either you're worryingly ignorant or are trolling, in which case I just bit.
How the heck is that even possible? Doesn't the US have massive industries such as steel mills running 24/7 sucking down major megawatts?

Hold on a minute, Magnatune does Ogg now? Since when?
(goes over to site)
Holy shit you're right! I'm off to buy some additions to my collection...

Sorry but your post is just too sensible. Please apologise and get back to irrational badmouthing The Man, like the rest of us.

Only problem was Apple screwed up by trademarking FireWire, so we get checkboxes such as iLink or IEEE-1394. No wonder nobody uses it today.
Then you'd better get testing, hadn't you?
in other words, they be lying
Arrr, fine wording that be for the day, me hearty.
It seems you're wrong (see other comments in this thread). I hope in future you won't be so quick to over-react and make yourself look silly.
Out of interest, where did you get the idea that the Phenom Toliman was a 100% new architecture distinct from the rest of the Phenoms?
I don't know. Perhaps they're saying that not being able to afford to feed a dependent is not sufficient justification for murdering them.
If your circumstances change and you find yourself no longer able to afford sufficient food for yourself, are you obliged to commit suicide?
