An environment where people connect and get along is generally a happier and more productive one.
But when I'm Deep Into The Code, I certainly don't want to be disturbed by office politics, what cool toy the geek down the hallway has bought, or who's playing rugby after work. That's when you may want to invest in a do-not-disturb OAR [On A Roll] sign for your door or cubicle wall, or ITZ [In The Zone] if you prefer.
2.) Like Windows Media Center, the Xbox 360 will play saved, unencrypted DVDs off a file server somewhere. The only catch is that Windows Media Center needs to be on that box (or connected to that box) to share out the movies. I have a "DVD jukebox" server with Windows Media Center that currently dishes out 50 movies on my TV. I can move that to the basement and just have my Xbox 360 now.
Yikes.
Can no one else see what's going on here? Microsoft wants control of your living room as well as your office.
Apt is not and never has been an alternative to Rpm.
Apt is a sophisticated front end for the packaging system, be it Rpm or Deb. The basic front ends are/bin/rpm and/usr/bin/dpkg for RedHat and Debian respectively.
Yum is another front end. The Fedora Project went with Yum, after spending some time with Apt as an option.
RedHat still prefers up2date, but you can still install apt or yum at your option.
Morton's Steakhouse offered to give all of the kids a free steak dinner, but the project declined, saying they needed to stick to their previous decision of powdered eggs for everyone...
I think you'll find it's more like:
Fluffy Bunny's Candy Shop offered to give all of the kids a free lolly bag, but the project declined, saying they needed to stick to their previous decision of providing fresh vegetables, books on farming, ploughing and harvesting equipment, irrigation systems and bags of seed for everyone.

Except you forget Sony is a multi-headed beast. Sony (the A/V equipment manufacturer) and Sony Computer Entertainment have absolutely nothing to do with Sony BMG, apart from being under the same group of shareholders.
Besides, if you wish to tell Sony BMG that their music policies suck, how is not buying a PS3 going to get that message across? If the record sales drop dramatically but everything else stays the same that would be a much clearer message IMO.
Besides, which up and coming console supports the greater evil? (hint: it's the XBox 360)
Since the industrial revolution the burning of fossil fuels has increased the amount of atmospheric carbon dioxide to about 1.5 times the level it was in the early 1800s.
No.
Look, just- No!
You don't know the cause of the increased CO2.
I think you mean: Since the industrial revolution the amount of atmospheric carbon dioxide has increased to about 1.5 times the level it was in the early 1800s.
The point the GP was making was that global warming is happening, and increased CO2 in the atmosphere is the likely cause, but the jury is still out on whether mankind has any part in that increase.
... it's easy to predict what songs are going to be hits, since the success of any given song is mostly dictated by payola, and has little to do with the merits of the song itself.
Just tune into any pop radio station to find out what the next hit is going to be.
Do people here really think the Top 40 is based on popularity?
So with all this patent badness how many of us on/. are boycotting Amazon now?
Since a few on/. have loudly declared they're boycotting Sony in a kneejerk reaction to the evil rootkit installer they purchased recently, it's important to offer a bit of perspective.
This IP rubbish will have a much greater impact on our freedoms than Sony Music (a very separate entity from Sony Computer Entertainment BTW) trying to cripple computers of people who try to listen to CDs with them.
If successful, one of the above will eventually lead to culture that distributes mainstream music/movies that only works in certain pre-approved devices. Which will of course lead to a shift away from the mainstream.
The other can only result in a society where no one will be able to perform any programming, business practice or artistic expression without being obliterated by the 1 or 2 megacompanies that hold all the patents.
It's not just motherboards that are affected - I've lost a couple of nVidia GeForce4Ti's that way. It's now gotten to the point where I have to specify motherboards and graphics cards without GSC capacitors. Every single Gigabyte GA-7VRXP we've had has had bad caps develop over two years - three happened in the space of two weeks, just after the warranty expired of course!
You can't guarantee that a given .DOC file will work equally well in Word and OOo. If Word complies to OD, though, you can make that guarantee.
:)
The same way Word compiles to RTF?
Yes but don't get too anti-social.

The economically disadvantaged will also suffer from the lack of Opendocument support in Microsoft Office.
How would the economically disadvantaged suffer? They'll just use OpenOffice instead. 100% OD support, and zero cost.
Unless they're already pirating MS Office and hopelessly locked in.

Are people really going to give it to them?
... what we really want to know on /. is:
How does Linux run on it?
I'm still holding out for the PS3
Now, for the love of God, don't put it back together!
Some of us are already boycotting the entire RIAA.
Do you really think this is going to stop at Sony BGM?
Who's up for a boycott of the EU since one member country, the UK is clearly doing evil things?
I mean, that's what we do here, isn't it?

Your comment would be funny if so many didn't believe it to be true.
spare a thought for us living in countries where copying music from any form to another is prohibited by law.
Sony are trying to say that they permit copying (they have to in the US, under Fair Use), but you'd better keep your masters in a really safe place.
Restrictive and archaic? Yes.
Unreasonable? Not necessarily.

Where do you think the stories about sea monsters and dragons across multiple cultures come from?

Both are very bad, but I know which is worse.
Pick your battles, people.
