Knoppix has done a lot of the groundwork involved with bootable distros.
IMO, if we can start out with a knoppix-based distro, cut out some of the less entertaining apps and replace them with the likes of Frozen Bubble, Wesnoth, Falcons Eye, Chromium, TuxRacer and some commercial demos we'd have it made.
That isn't the problem.
IMO, the problem is video drivers. We need to have 3D accelerated drivers, or no gamer will take us seriously, period. Unfortunately at the moment that means having to rely on closed source drivers.
Now that nVidia allows repackaging their drivers I don't see why Klaus Knopper couldn't integrate them into his Knoppix. Has this been suggested to him, or attempted by anyone else?
Ditto for ATi, but I'm not sure if their licence allows redistribution.
You're not going to believe this, but in one of my weaker moments, I bought a Hunger Buster McDs combo, and it came with a $10 music voucher on "selected titles" at Sounds music store.
As one who has made a few games, I can say that Linux is certainly the better platform for running games well.
The problem is that there aren't many games actually *made* for linux. On windows you can choose from hundreds (okay thousands) of games. On linux, the number of decent games is probably in the area of a few dozen.
Yes Linux does lose out in the area of games, but it's more of a business decision and market share problem than a technical one.
The RealMedia breach-of-contract issue aside, I'm much more worried that places like this are considering switching exclusively to Microsoft-controlled formats.
What ever happened to the more free formats like DivX?
The whole point of patents was to give a leg up to the people who invent something before for a few years before making the methods available for all to implement.
Christians (as opposed to Mormons) are compelled to "Love thy neighbour" by mandate, but it goes further than that. Most acts of love (the real selfless ones) are done with very few, if any, other people knowing about it. Good works occur not to earn brownie points with each other or God, but out of Love.
Which, you might say, is inscribed into your very being when you let Christ take the wheel of your life.
Hmmm, I wonder if emphasis should be added to the word PC, or perhaps graphical.
So either they're planning on making a text adventure for the PC (long live Zork!), or..... (cold sweat) perhaps they've been bribed enough by Microsoft to make a graphical adventure exclusive to the XBox.
I know this doesn't address issues when working with multiple images, but with 2.0 you can dock all those little dialog windows into one.
Though I myself find it less usable that way. I like having my brushes window in one corner, my layers in another, and part of the filters menu immediately to the right of the file I'm editing..

No, Linux plays real games better than under Windows.
:)
Some examples include:
Quake3, Tribes2, Unreal (Tournament, UT2003, UT2004), Return To Castle Wolfenstein, TuxRacer
Hell even Jedi Outcast runs under WineX about the same as natively under Windows (Jedi Academy plays slightly better than under Windows)
Real games, just not very many of them.
And the samples are all live action..
What, you mean Mike Wasowski is real? I knew it!
Hey, I just noticed, that's like diVX spelled backwards!
Now that's clever.
Or does it stand for something like:
X Vid Isn't Divx
I meant for floppy disks. Internal ones.
Really?
Bugger I really did pick the wrong distro. Fedora doesn't seem to have any automounter support at all.
I don't think that's the issue.

What just happened to my squadron of uber-kittens? They've gone!
/. had an upgrade?

All you guys complain about is how the judicial system interferes with capitalism
I think you'll find that it's the other way around.
.. ripping every CD I buy to vorbis and uploading them to my Zaurus.
Pity the money still goes to the RIA*, not the artist, but what can you do when they've signed contracts?
It's good to see more of these places cropping up.
Another good one is Magnatune, the "We are not evil" guys.
Now if only more artists would add content to places like this...
...wouldn't it have long since expired by now?
The whole point of patents was to give a leg up to the people who invent something before for a few years before making the methods available for all to implement.
So how long to patents in the US live for now?
I think you have missed the point.

Remember that Microsoft lobbied strongly against recent anti-spam legislation proposals.
You can bet your boots that Microsofts foremost goal in this initiative is not to eliminate spam.
There is something much more sinister going on here.

OK! But we have to walk to dinner. No car...
Not a problem. The dinner, like the lunch, is free.
...that commercial outfits are starting to crop up that take advantage of the CC licence's flexibility.
I only hope we'll start seeing more places like this, and they'll rise in popularity.
It's called context; seeing the software running within a complete desktop environment.

Different strokes for different folks, I guess.
Yes, yes it does.
IBM and Hitachi are two of the few manufacturers that still offer 3-year warranties on IDE hard drives.
Along with Samsung and Western Digital.
Where I come from, IBM DeskStars are now known as Death Stars.
