One more example of why this country needs a loser pays legal system and capped awards. It's become so bad that if you have anything of value it's almost assured someone is going to come up with some way to sue you for it. Odds are they'll get something too. They may have no chance of winning but it's often cheaper just to settle with them. If the individual/company doesn't settle and they go to court... there's still some chance they'll some yahoo judge or jury to side with them and get a huge payout. So even if they sue 10 times and win once it still pays off. This nonsense is killing business, driving jobs overseas, raising insurance prices, and prices on everything in general. You make the loser pay that cuts some of that off. You put REASONABLE caps on awards you cut of some more. I really don't want to sudo finance idiots that do stupid things, sue, and end up getting rich because of it anymore. Of course there are times when something happens that's so outragous huge judgement are justified.. so in that case you have some panel of judges that examines these cases and comes up with something suitable. Of course this is probably wishful thinking to think this would ever happen. Trial lawyers are getting rich off this crap now and they have a bought a whole lot of political influence in the Democratic party and Republicans are too afraid to take them on (who wants to get in a fight with a lawyer.. not to mention ALL of them).
1. Open source software that does everything this thing does is available for free.
2. To do something like this on your own you really CAN'T use old PC parts you've got laying around the house. Assuming you plan to do the PVR functions you'll need a decent processor (otherwise you could get by with 500mhz), lots of memory, a very large RAID array (can't have all your work lost to one bad drive, plus video/mp3's are going to need some room), a good UPS, heavy duty power supply system, cooling that won't die on you, and a couple higher end video capture cards... That all probably all adds up to around ~$3500. The good thing is this is upgradable and expandable for the future.
3. Next you need some way to interact with the system in a easy and natural way. Voice control isn't exactly ready and if you go with touchscreen LCD remotes.. you'll end up spending nearly as much as this system. RF remotes connected to a computer that distributes video to TV's thoughout the house (so you can see what you are doing) is probably cheapest and easiest way to do this. Say ~$1000 for that (including extras you might need)
4. Lots of time... For someone who's fairly tech savvy say two weeks worth of work or about ~$3000. Most people would probably who are tech savvy would consider this part of the fun an not an expense though. If that's not you you'll have to pay someone to do it for you.
For all those that are undoubtely going to post something about how America and President Bush in particular are evil for doing something like this here's a little factoid:
Europe did it first to Spain for it's SUPPORT of the Iraq war. If you don't believe me here's a link (NYT -registration required etc..):
http://www.nytimes.com/2003/11/27/international/ eu rope/27BRIE5.html?ex=1072069200&en=bf36a06d6e81a8a b&ei=5070
Not that's I'd expect Slashdot (or the BBC) to get the whole story. As much as I like Slashdot this place is definitely ultra liberal and has an agenda to go with that... so always helps to verify anything you hear on this first before you believe it. (As everyone should on ALL media sources before they go spouting it as fact)
Name one war between two stable capitalist democracies in the last 100 years... You can't because it's never happened. The idea that it would between the US and a western European country is ridiculous. Of course our interests drive our foreign policy, as they damn well should. Private interests are part of those interests. That's what a democratic system of government is all about. If you think every other government doesn't do exactly the same thing you aren't from this planet.
As to your two "examples".... 1. First of all there is no "Hague Invasion Act". That's what it's been named by it's detractors. Its actual name is the "anti-ICC American Service members Protection Act." So right off the bat you show your bias. Prosecuting real war criminals is one thing, and sure there have been American war criminals, just as in an military. They are the exception though, as 99.9% of US servicemen are very professional well disciplined individuals. Letting the ICC, which is nothing more then a political tool, prosecute whomever it wants is absurd. They already were talking about bringing Tommy Franks, Dick Cheney, and every other US leader up on charges.
2. Your 2nd example is nearly 60 years old, surely you can come up with something better then this. Even at 60 years ago what the US did wasn't out of line for the time. If Italy had elected communists that would have been the last election they ever had. After all this is the same Europe the elected Hitler and Mussolini to Parliament.
"Since Americans are parochial and not very sophisticated"...
You lose all creditability with a statement like that. Ever since racial superiority and religious superiority have became unfashionable now you guys go out and come up with "cultural superiority"... pure stupidity. If you actually believe it then you have ZERO understanding of the US or the American people. So go home and keep to yourself because you bring nothing to an otherwise legitimate debate.
I don't think I'm over simplifying anything. Of course there are going to be differences in opinions. What's going on now in the world goes well beyond that, however.
Take for example the Kyoto Treaty. There was no way the US was EVER going to sign up for it. It wasn't in the US's best interest to what sign something that would in effect cripple the US economy. Not that the US rejected the principal goal of Kyoto, as it suggested alternatives. But Kyoto is always cited as "yet another example of American arrogance and greed, and the Bush administration in general". The fact that the Senate voted 98-0 against it, or that even during the Clinton administration an earlier vote was exactly the same is completely ignored.
Missile defense is another example. Europe said "North Korea, Iran... Ha you face no threat, you are just going to start another arms race" but look at that statement today! China, who isn't even supposed to be the target of such a system, has made statements to the effect of "the US cares more about LA then it does Taiwan". Again this is another cry of the anti-US crowd.
Iraq... That's a difference of goals, not the tactics of how to get there. Europe didn't want to do anything. (And that's what "inspections" were.. a way to sell the idea of doing nothing.) The US on the other hand sold the idea of WMD's. Really its goal was a paradigm shift in the Middle East. That hasn't happened yet, nor will it for quite awhile, but we'll see who's right 20 years from now. As to the political fallout of Iraq, I don't see that much of a change in Europe. It was pretty anti-American before Iraq. Iraq just brought that out. In the US, totally different story. The US wasn't anti anything European, in fact most of us feel a historic attachment to it. After Iraq though, a good portion of Americans are VERY anti French, German, etc...
Iraq most definitely DID have cruise missiles (They used them during the war!). So does every other semi-modern military in the world. If not they can buy them easily from North Korea. Hell... you don't even need a cruise missile to take advantage of GPS like system in warfare. Modify a plane, report troop locations etc... A couple months ago there was even a story posted right here on Slashdot about a guy who's trying to build his own GPS guided cruise missile for under $5000. During the war with Iraq the Iraqi's were almost able to hit the US's command center without GPS guidance. They only over flew it by a couple miles. Imagine if they had GPS! So to think a European GPS system that the US can't "turn off" is not a treat is very very naive.
Europe is going to have to make a decision which side it's on. They can't continue to say yes to all the benefits that 50+ years of good relations has given BOTH sides and then turn around and covertly attempt to undermine everything the US does. Europe faces NO threat from ever being attack by the US. The only agenda the US has is a world were all countries have some form of democratically elected government and a homegrown form of capitalism. How is that not in everyone's benefit? Ever hear of comparative advantage? That's what's made the US the economic power that it is. Europe hasn't had enough to do in these last 50 years. They've got themselves stuck in this ridiculous utopian view of the world and have ignored some very real threats.
Now... Not to get completely off topic... Any alternative to GPS is a major threat to the US. If you can't see that you are blind. If Iraq had access to something like this they could have hit every US base in Kuwait last March. Who knows what could happen in some other future war. With GPS you can literally turn off the treat. Why else do you think China would be keen to join something like this? If American troops are endanged I fully support the US military building a counter measure to either jam or shoot down something like this.
Call me old fashioned but I still believe the US is a moraly driven country. You might not agree with some of the tactics it uses but it's goals are just. History has turned out pretty much always on it's side since it's been a world power.
Besides, the US military is going to win any war it gets into at this point and I see nothing that's going to change that fact in the future. Why not work for them? The technology that you develop is going to end up saving lives. The wars themselves are going to be shorter, less troops on both sides are going to die, and certainly less civilians will get killed in the process. Eventually that same technology works itself into the civilian world too, usually with great benifit.
ReiserFS v4 is backward compatible with v3. So if there isn't a conversion tool yet (don't know) you'll still be able use your v3 filesystems along side any new v4 filesystems you might add.
The solution to losing weight is easy.. eat less and exercise more. Even if you are eating the wrong things you'll still lose weight doing that. The only thing difficult about it is maintaining the level of self disapine required to achieve results.
If you really want to get in shape you need to alter your lifestyle. (otherwise you'll eventually gain back anything you lose) To do that:
1. Change your diet. High fat foods, sugar, and refined grains (converted by the body into sugar), are all to be avoided as much as possible. If your incilin levels get to high you body sends an order to store the excess as fat. Anything with with the words High Frucose, Hydrogenated, etc... don't eat. That mean cut out the pop and replace it with water. Cut out drinking as much as possible. Eliminate fast food.
2. Eat less (while trying to lose weight). Start off by cutting 10% of what you eat now. When you get used to that, do it again. Also eat more often.. just smaller portions.
3. Join a gym and go 5-6 days a week. The best excerise I've found to lose weight for myself is running. Set as fast a pace as you can handle for 15 minutes, take a 5 min cool down, then do another 15. Try to get to the point where you can handle 45 minutes without stopping. Also.. lift weights. The best way to keep fat off is to have muscle. Talk to a trainer for that one. To much cardo while doing a weight program will dimish your results find a balance that fits you.
4. Measure and set goals. Weight yourself everyday at the same time. Set a reasonable goal to meet in the next few days and work towards it. (Something like 2 pounds in the next week). The fastest I've been able to lose (without losing water and being healthy) is ~3 pounds a week. To burn 1 pound off you need to burn an extra 3500 cal if that gives you are idea.
After I discovered squirrelmail I stopped using email clients all together. Of course you need a IMAP server.. or access to one. In a corporate environment that's not a problem though. Neither is it one for the tech savvy Linux/Unix/BSD home users out there. So why create an Outlook clone aimed at these people? Why even use Outlook in these places?
Added bonus... if you run your own IMAP server you can also use amavis-new and spamassassin.
China is about to do what the US/Russia did in the 1960's. Even then there are pretty much using a copied Russian design. They aren't developing any new technology. How is that impressive? I'll be much more impressed if someone manages to get a commerical fight into space by years end. They don't have the budget of a government like China's so they've had to do some real inovation. China hasn't had an original idea since gunpowder.
Sounds an awful like "yeah, we were going to do.. now we are thinking twice after getting caught with our pants down on Slashdot" SCO must be really at a rock bottom low if they are actually considering this hail mary. They would be stepping on some mighty big toes, IBM and Oracle to name a few. Not to mention the entire Linux install base! SCO would get stomped!
So does this mean Samba will actually support XP/2000 now or they just being teases? Yeah... it works great as a file server with XP/2000 clients. I want a replacement for a Windows 2000 Active Directory domain controller. I know Samba 3 is supposed to support this when it finally comes out.
Is nobody else here a runner? I run 7.5 miles a day so I can tell you that you can't use an Archos Jukebox Studio 20 for that. It's super nice MP3 player but it's too WAY to heavy and it would be almost impossible to control without having to stop. You need something super light (Like a flash memory player) that you can strap or clip onto your arm or the small of your back. If it slaps against you you're going to get sore after a couple miles. I have a Samsung YEP YP-NDU (about a year old) It's got a remote I clip on my shoulder and the player I put in the small of my back, makes it real easy to control and I don't even feel it.
A 802.11b based wireless repeater at does 20 miles for less then $100? How are they going to eat all those pringles chips? Does bbq have a better range then sour cream and onion? Seriously, this sounds like what wardrivers (www.wardriving.com) have been doing for a while now. An empty pringles can and $25 in odd parts and you can create your own antenna with a 10 mile range. Guess this just makes it that much easier to "explore" a few networks in the next town.
NO degree + No experience = NO job (especially in the job market now) I don't know any SA's without a degree.
An undergrad degree is a MUST if you plan to work for someone else. Getting a master's is almost a requirement at this point too. It doesn't matter as much where you go or what degree you get as the fact that you have one. Without a degree you:
1. Won't even be considered at any corporation. 2. Will not be able to get jobs that give you any experience that counts. 3. Will have an uphill battle being taken seriously.
A degree just gets your foot in the door... then you have to build up the experience. Installing Linux on your home PC isn't going to impress anyone. You need REAL on the job experience.
Consider this... Usually it's management or HR does the hiring. They look for just keywords when sorting though the stacks of resumes they get. It's only after they bring you in for the interview that IT gets a chance you look you over.
If the cost or time of going to college is a huge factor for you stay at home and going to community college for a few years. Most of the time the classes are cheaper and easier there anyway. Once you've got all the general classes behind you transfer to some place else.
Probably 10-20% of the population claims to be IT savvy. In reality 1% at best actually is. Having a tech degree or certification doesn't guaranty you know squat. Too many people get them only because they think they can make a lot of money not because they live and breathe the stuff. The people that hire for tech jobs a lot of the time are HR or management and can't tell the difference. Tech support is just worse then other IT jobs because it's one of the lowest paying, but the problem exists to some extent in all IT jobs.
The first part of this bill I agree with 100%. As it stands right now you could hide a camera in your neighbors house and it's completely legal as long as you don't record sound or plug it into the wall (power theft). Also when you are at home/private property there is an expectation of privacy.
How and why this would be grouped in with a law on domain names I have no idea. To me they are two completely different things. But that's one of the great mysteries of Congress. I don't completely disagree with the idea of requiring.prn or.porn addresses. It would make for a very effective way to filter porn from kids etc... I just don't see HOW they can do this. I don't think it's a free speech issue since you aren't blocking these sites out but obviously not all of these sites are run from within the US. US law could apply if they were selling access to their site to people here in the US. The problem is even if the company said "ok we'll keep our.com and only sell to people outside the US" that's really not possible to do. The US government is never going to get away with putting in a filter like China has. And there are a lot of technical and legal ways around this. As far as the hate speech side that is completely the wrong thing to do. Who's going to decide what is hate speech and what's not? Are we going to make "hate" speech sites use.riaa? If that's the case I'm going to request that www.dnc.org be filtered out because it offends me...
Congress is just law happy. I don't think 99% of them understand the technology the are trying to legislate. (Hence the DMCA)
Linuxconf breaks things. Redhat was right to take it out. The only problem is that they haven't really replaced it with anything. What they should include instead is Webmin. It might not have a command line interface but do you really need that functionality for a typical Redhat install? In my opinion it's by far the best Linux config tool around.
The only problem with server centric applications is that you are out of luck when the network goes down. I don't know about you but I have comcrap as an ISP so that happens probably once a week to me. My PC has never been down... and if it was I can either fix it or hack something together for a week or two. At the very worst I'd just switch to another one of my PC's and access all my data. (Backed up on a network and available from the net) So I'd suggest learning how do that too. If you rely on other people you will ALWAYS have downtime.
There may be a few news articles discussed here but this is no news site. This is more of a rumor mill / science forum / freak show site for the technically inclined. If you are looking a really good NEWS ONLY site I'd take a look at the Drudge Report, www.drudgereport.com. It's probably the simplest and most no frill site out there but you can always get the lastest news before anywhere else (even TV) and news you don't see anywhere else. I've made one of my regulars.

So does this mean Samba will actually support XP/2000 now or they just being teases? Yeah... it works great as a file server with XP/2000 clients. I want a replacement for a Windows 2000 Active Directory domain controller. I know Samba 3 is supposed to support this when it finally comes out.
Guess you really WILL feel dirty for watching those porn divx movies you've wiped onto your MASSIVE petrie disk collection.
It's \. silly!
Also when you are at home/private property there is an expectation of privacy.
.prn or .porn addresses. It would make for a very effective way to filter porn from kids etc... I just don't see HOW they can do this. I don't think it's a free speech issue since you aren't blocking these sites out but obviously not all of these sites are run from within the US. US law could apply if they were selling access to their site to people here in the US. The problem is even if the company said "ok we'll keep our .com and only sell to people outside the US" that's really not possible to do. The US government is never going to get away with putting in a filter like China has. And there are a lot of technical and legal ways around this. As far as the hate speech side that is completely the wrong thing to do. Who's going to decide what is hate speech and what's not? Are we going to make "hate" speech sites use .riaa? If that's the case I'm going to request that www.dnc.org be filtered out because it offends me...
How and why this would be grouped in with a law on domain names I have no idea. To me they are two completely different things. But that's one of the great mysteries of Congress. I don't completely disagree with the idea of requiring
