    It was on an ancient DGUX system and I was having a bear of a time upgrading sendmail. Management had no clue they were running an open relay. -- "Whats that?"

    So I stopped outgoing mail every night at 8pm, cleaned out the queues in the morning and restarted outgoing mail.

    I had to keep the legitimate stuff but that it was not a problem figuring out what was legit and what wasn't.

    After a few months I was able to install Red Hat -- end of problem, at least for a while..

    It depends what you mean by Europe, of course, but after the next round of expansion in 2004, when Eastern European countries will join the EU, Europe is actually going to have a populartion to some 450 million.

    It looks like you are the one who should explain what you mean by Europe . In the same comment you use Europe ("Eastern European countries") as a continent and as a political thing ("Europe is actually going to have a population ...")

    The population of the continent of Europe will not increase by the political action of adding countries to the EU. It is the population included in the EU that will increase.

    Apple did initially tell security experts they didn't plan to patch Jaguar.

    That is speculation. You have no way of knowing, unless you know exactly who said what to Goldsmith. And you don't.


    There is a very simple way to determine who Goldsmith talked to. Just check and see who was fired at Apple on Friday.

    Noting this, the fastest way to get data off a drive might not be a straight line.

    This is true. However it is also true that a defrag does not have to put the data in physically contigious blocks. It can just as easily put the data in whatever configuration makes retrevial work fastest on that particular drive geometry.

    This means that an intelligent defrag can improve performance.

    It takes about ten years for the power of whatever is considered a "Super Computer" to make it to the desktop.

    That means that in 2013 I can have a 7.5 TFlop game machine for about $2,000.

    I believe this was where Scully and Jobs clashed. Jobs wanted the mac to be priced low enough so almost everyone could buy one. Scully wanted big profits immediately.

    The board of directors listened to the one who would make their stock options go up sooner.

    Remember governments get to tax companies, so money for companies == money for govt.

    Not exactly true in this case. I work for the state of Massachusetts and I know that the state spends a lot more on Microsoft products than they take back in from Microsoft. The only return for Mass is the 5% sales tax when someone buys windows or office.

    And don't forget NO ONE is shorter sighted than an elected official. If the entire state government switches to open source tomorrow it will have no impact on taxes before the next election. In a few years perhaps, but not any time soon.

    That's interesting. Why did he choose qmail?
    I chose qmail. We are expecting to go to about 8,000 users over the next year. I wanted something that was bullet proof from a security point of view. (there is a $10k reward if you can find a security hole in qmail) I work at a community college. Students love to hack.

    From the numbers you mention I would expect almost any product will handle the load. Also with 10 users it is not a real problem to visit each workstation for setup.

    Things like:
    how many users will you be supporting
    expected traffic volume
    What are you using for smtp? sendmail/qmail/whatever
    Which web client are you using?

    I hired a consultant earlier this year to move our 1,000 user Red Hat based email system from sendmail to qmail, install Courier imap, and horde/imp for web access. He charged about $3k.
    This included migrating all the existing mbox format inboxes to maildir. Money well spent. Everything works well and best of all -- I didn't have to do it

    Almost right. They can charge $0.99 per track to make the transfer. There is no obligation for Apple's fees to be "nominal". They can charge whatever they want.

    I work for a college and the Academic Computing staff want nohing to do with anything but Microsoft. Under threat of an audit they bought a campus wide license and now use that as cost justification for everything else "After all we already have the software".

    I work in the internal IT department. We run the "business" on linux and HPUX. But the future, the students, are all being taught on Microsoft stuff.

    I wish Eric would be more clear about what he's planning next.

    Never "telegraph your punches" Once the bad guys know what you are going to do they can start to plan for it. SCO will lose more sleep wondering what is coming than they would if he told them in advance.

    Most companies indemnify their officers from personal lawsuits.
    It now looks like the officers of SCO are using this entire farce to make bundle by selling their SCO stock before the company craters.

    Once SCO is history it will not be able to protect them. So how about some individual lawsuits against the officers of SCO as individuals? I think it is time to shake these turkeys up a little.

    Now who do we suggest this to?

    about three years ago. It was reported in the NY Times. They were charging for DVD's based on past spending habits. If you were known to be willing to pay a lot for a DVD you saw the higher prices.

    There was a customer uproar and a threat of a class action suit. They publicly recanted and said "never again."

    Apple's chief of hardware design said that the G5s wouldn't be seeing the inside of a portable for a long time. I can't imagine why he'd lie.

    Because once he says G5 notebooks are around the corner -- NO ONE will buy a G4 never mind a G3 notebook

    There is only one rule --- WIN.

    I have worked for six different computer companies over the years. All they ever wanted to do was win ONE test. This is so the literature and marketing droids could focus on that test showing that we had the faster computer in the known universe.

    At one place there was a choice. We could have a C compiler that either ran the customers work faster OR gave better spec marks. I don't have to tell you which one management picked.

    The results are never that useful. Each manufacturer runs their soon-to-be-released hardware and software against the competition's already released product. It is always unfair. Everyone in the industry knows that and no one really cares.

    Apple now has a machine that stands up to the best for performance. Recognize that and move on. Because next month someone else will have another machine that gives "better" numbers. The only thing any of us care about is -- is it fast enough for what I want to do?

    Yes you can just learn perl from a book. But some of us need motivation.

    Signing up for a class gives you a schedule to keep, people to work with and compete with. This works better for a lot of us.

    I can read the book and learn things too. But I attend classes because it get me out of the office and forces me to spend the time learning insead of dealing with whatever today's crisis is.

    Then I go home after class, connect to the office and fix the crisis. But at least I spent time learning something new.
