    I'm surprised about the startup time... On a 1.8GHz Pentium, 512 megs of ram, RedHat 8.0 using JDK1.4.02 it never takes more than 20 seconds.

    If you want to see slow, try Netbeans.

    Points well taken. In retrospect, my example was tasteless, but I tend to freak out when people put out ideas involving a crowd ganging up on a few individuals. Historically, it's never been a pleaseant endeavor. Recently, this type of ideas seems to be more and more fashionable in the U.S. I think it's scary. Even when it's self-inflicted.
    Anyway, thanks for your perspective. Back to integral calculus now...

    Sorry to offend you. My point is PEER PRESSURE==FEAR THE MOB. I think freedom begins with individual freedom. Also, it's the classic pattern: opt-in first, it soon turns into: "why aren't you joining the 'good' people?". Etc, etc.

    You want morality? Reform education, fire crooked politicians, ban money in government, increase citizenship.

    Absolutely right! The DMCA is evil. Here's a bit of conspiracy theory for ya: Gilette makes new razor with FRID tags in it. CheapsRazors.com also makes razor blades that you can use with your Gilette razor but that don't include the chip. Well, that's reverse engineering too my friend. That's tampering with the device, etc.

    Search for MVC on Sourceforge and you'll find over 50 projects that use the MVC methodology. Most of them use Java. Some PHP projects out there and I'm sure there's a C# implementation somewhere... So what's your point?

    I was merely commenting on the reviewer's skills. it is a fact that people embed DB access, business rules, in the UI code. They've been doing this for ages. The fact that the reviewer thought the author's comment was dumb shows me that the reviewer has no practical experience with the subject matter.

    I agree with you on the rest of your comments. I don't think PHP or ASP are any good. We use server-side Java/JDO to do most of our development. Large project. (Once a) Fortune 500.

    When is the last time you worked on a production system? Every ASP, JSP or PHP app I know has them. Eventhough lots of people talk about MVC and Model 2 stuff, very few people actually implement solutions that way: it takes more planning, the code/build/test cycle is longer, etc. People cut corners, it's a fact of life.

    If the librarian still feels it necessary to include some information that may have been blocked by an erroneous porn blocker, they can get that information from another medium (books, etc.)
    what if the information is only available online? who is going to regulate possible abuse fron the porn blocker ? and who said porn was bad in the first place? It's not necessarily my cup of tea but it might be for someone else. Who gives you, me, the porn blocker the right to decide what's good and what's bad??? what's moral and what isn't?

    Well, I don't know about 'authentic', but:
    - we try to buy fresh fruit & vegetables at the market
    - we *try* to avoid canned/processed products
    - we try to eat fish rather than meat
    - we eat soy burgers rather than hamburgers
    The cost seems about the same as before. It does however take a bit longer to shop and to prepare meals, but I enjoy cooking.

    You should read the amazing "Fast Food Nation" by Eric Schlosser. One of the chapters talks about the "taste" industry ('flavorists') and all these companies setup along the NJ turnpike. They make a liquid chemical agent that smells exactly like a flame-broiled burger. The reason: the food is so shitty that the taste disappears when it is processed. It has to be added 'back'...
