You should throw that right down in front when the computer is brought in and explain the consequences (No windows update or whatever the hell it may be, i can't keep track) and if possible validate the key right then so they can see it for themselves.
Regarding your OP, maybe print a flyer with instructions on how to proceed through the validate/activate warnings when WGA eventually shows up, and what it all acutally means? I suspect most of your customers don't really give a shit about stolen software (after all they let their cousin put together a PC without actually purchasing a copy of windows or office) they're just worried about getting in trouble.
Most of us got jobs and responsibilities in which the end-user is someone other than ourselves, and most of us came to realize that alienating userbase on the modern internet, especially if you're selling something, is poor judgement
I used to deal with medicaid billing; while this has (for my locality) moved to web based in the last several years, before THAT, the submission application was a EDS-created java monstrosity that would, as far as I could ever tell, only run in IE6 (and barely run there)
This was a thing which, barring filling out the paperwork by hand and mailing it in, you had to use to bill anything to medicaid. Now granted, this isn't exactly corporate but it was issued by the state and was the only way to interface with them electronically.
Also, EDS is no minor player, so I wouldn't doubt if most of their projects of that sort had similar performance.
The difficulty is in acting alone. If IE6 support was widely dropped in that manner, then it would become obvious to most people that the nature of the problem is with their software, not the rest of the internet.
So a storefront should, by extension, just be stacks of items sorted alphabetically on plain shelves?

I've only watched gameplay videos from a guy doing a playthrough on somethingawful's forums, so I didn't have much to go on besides the discussion in that thread and the videos.
It does LOOK amazing to be sure, but yeah I agree with some of your points; the plot and constant "now go fix THIS thing" tasks got a little boring
Yep. Along the same vein, it amuses, and saddens me to no end that there are still 'dry' counties in the US, along with piles of blue laws regulating when alcohol can be sold.
The source is the same, back in whenthefuckever the moral upstanding rulers of the community decided the average working people needed protecting from the horrible sins they'd commit otherwise.

Out of curiosity, what did you think of Deadspace?
News flash: You are not elite because you've conditioned yourself to use a clunky GUI. The point of one is to make interfacing with the computer easier.
Their obvious retort is "If you had a decent window manager the UI wouldn't BE bad"
But I'm right there with you. I got fed up and bought Lightroom and now use it for about 95% of my photo work. I fire gimp up when i have to, for certain tasks.
As was said many times in the original article, the issue is the country the business is based in and the laws there. It doesn't matter one ounce where the servers are located.
I don't think it's necessarily the emasculation part. Between the type and hours of work, and the co workers described to me by a nurse i was acquainted with, you likely couldn't pay me enough to take on that kind of job.
Amen to that. It's true what the OP said about people in positions of power, but there is a shit ton of area in the US where people are appalled to the core of their being by these things.
There's still a lot of backwards shithole to clear out, and there's really NOT a lot of difference between the good old boys club in rural north carolina or the same that runs an elite college or convenes at an exclusive country club.
Read up a bit at all the paranoiacs freaking out, there may be the significance if you tend to be a suspicious dude.
On the other hand, if your personal tinfoil cranium coating is sufficiently loose as to not restrict circulation, it's just a notice of google being slightly clever with a domain name.
informal is an interesting choice of word :)

Why would I devote man hours to fixing something that isn't broken [right now] when those developers could be doing billable work?
(Is the question most management will ask you upon suggesting that)
My bank (State level credit union) and both of my credit card providers (one large, one relatively small) work beautifully in firefox

Even if management DOES understand, the sales guy has more clout than your manager because THIS IS AN IMPORTANT CLIENT GUYS. /bitter

The typical car's starter battery isn't. The traction battery in a hybrid is, and I'm guessing so is the battery pack in a full electric.
I think even Mr. Tesla would have had trouble with this really...
