actually SIP is simply a handshaking protocol and has absolutely nothing to do with video streaming. However, it allows for the handshaking of voice and video communication among other things. The reason it is not supported by any other clients is because they are not likely using a open standard for the communication of the stream after the sip connection is made. SIP is not the issue, it is the communication means that they are using that is the problem.

It's not as if an opteron box can be had for a tremendously low price, HP's quad processor opteron box starts at approx $20K. I don't really consider that "commodity". Compare that to a quad Xeon box for $26K. And finally compare that to a quad box from sun, for approx $34K. None of those are what I would consider commodity. So what is commodity pricing?

In both cases you are looking a mobile version of these cards which means you are getting a somewhat underpowered card to begin with.

This in my opinion is one of the greatest benefits of the open source community. You see with both Windows and OS X, if you want all the security patches you need to pay for the latest version of the software. 10. Speed Speed Speed on A Power Users Look at Linux on the Mac · · Score: 5, Interesting

One of the things that people have been saying with each iteration of OS X is that it is getting faster and faster. While this may be true, they still have a long way to go. I recently tried out a gentoo live cd on a friends 600MHz G3 iBook, and I was blown away. In OS X 10.3 the iBook feels responsive, but it is clear that a fast G4 or G5 would fair a great deal better. Under Gentoo running gnome 2.4 this computer was sickeningly fast. It felt almost as fast as my Athlon XP 2500. I was amazed at how much this little 600MHz G3 was capable of. If you are looking for a reason to use Linux over Mac OS X, look no further than getting to utilize the performance your system is capable of.

I know I know OS X is a more modern os blah blah blah. People used to say (maybe they still do and I just ignore them) the same thing about java, it is a more modern language and all of it's advanced capabilities are too much for todays computers. The end result? Very few modern GUI apps are written in java. I say the same thing for OS X, just because it uses a somewhat new concept for GUI (pdf-based) doesn't justify it's cripplingly slow speeds. I for one would rather have a fully functional GUI that doesn't make a decent processor suck wind every time I try to resize a browser window, than have the prettiest antialised interface. 18. Thoughts on why *nix is stable on Why Do Computers Still Crash? · · Score: 2, Interesting

There are a lot of moving parts in a working linux system (I'm talking CLI here), however, it seems to be less prone to crashing. As someone previously mentioned, software that is larger and more complex is more likely to have a bug. The point I'm getting at is that the design priciples of *nix dictate many small programs to create a large working system. When a program is small it can be designed and developed with care. This leads me to my final though, modern Operating Systems with GUIs are less stable because they are generally designed as large monolithic systems.

I'm going to claim that the prime reason systems with GUIs (and I'm including everyone) are unstable is because noone has come up with a rock solid base for such a system. X is not solid, windows explorer, mac os x's application manager, no one has it right.

The one thing I am leaving out, is that drivers also tend to be a major cause of instability. I cannot run the nvidia driver on my gentoo box, certain usb events can bring a system to a screetching halt. What needs to happen is better design around the unstable interfaces, such that in the worst case scenario, things can still be recovered.
