    Yeah...Finacially strapped...HEY EVERYONE WAKE UP!!! Guess what, they are in no way finacially strapped! In fact they were faced with the question recently about what they are going to do with their > $900 million dollar surplus from this year. I love how "public service" corporations don't have "profits" they have "surplus". Why is the MTA held to some sort of double standard, just because they server the public does not mean they are owned and operated by the government. They are a private entity with the same goals as every other private entity, to make money without pissing off it's customers too much. And oh yeah, they want to raise our fares, in New York the MTA is the brightest beacon of corruption.

    I am not an expert on radio waves or shielding. However, I am an owner of a portable cd player, crappy old mp3 player (iRock) and a 20GB iPod. From my own experiences the ipod + headphones is the only one of these devices that doesn't play the obnoxious galloping horses interference sound whenever my GSM phone rings. I assume that this is because of proper shielding on either the headphones or ipod or both. Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't that same shielding have a negative impact on picking up radio stations? Or, is it possible to cheaply shield against GSM and not AM/FM frequencies? Also, it seems like this would be really annoying on the ROKR phone...anyone know how it receives a clear signal without making you want to rip your ears out of your head every time someone calls you while you are listening to music?

    Tethered:

    So does a tether imply a physical restraint...that's a tough call. I think a similar example would be bumper cars? I personally classify them as tethered despite not being physically "tied" to anything. If you are restricted to a surface to provide the power and control then you are still tethered to said surface, it is restricting where you can move.

    Very true, I wasn't thinking about it that way. As an asside there is actually another programming language being worked on which compiles for the CLR. Nemerle - I haven't taken the time to evaluate it yet, but this is another interesting project resulting from the creation of mono. The other thing worth mentioning is that C++ vs C# both running in the managed runtime where C# is compiled for the CLR should have extremely similar performance numbers.

  10. Re:Anyone Have Actual Experience With Mono? on Miguel de Icaza Explains How To "Get" Mono · · Score: 5, Informative

    I'm sure I know less than most, but here are my general experiences with it.

    Mono Vs C++ - this is not a normal comparison due to one being a byte-code language and the other being compiled. That being said, I'm continuously impressed with mono's speed (especially compared to Java). It's current downside is an increase in memory utilization (compared to c, c++).

    Mono Vs. .Net C# - The only major difference is mono's lack of complete support for windows.forms. This is windows primary API for building C# gui apps under windows. Mono is working on an implementation of windows.forms, but I personally prefer gtk# which is portable (at least to windows afaik). Also, they have and ASP.net implementation which is suppose to have great compatability but I can not speak from experience here

    Mono compatability claims - here's the shocker, it really is very compatable with microsoft's C# .net platform. We're talking about ECMA specifications here, so they really can strive for compatability, it's less of (though not completely) a moving target than the WINE people have to deal with. They use to have a page listing package status, I can't seem to find the link anymore.

    Disclaimer: I've been working on various small personal projects using mono for the last 6 months and have been using various apps centerend around mono for about the same.

    Preferences->Advanced->Software Update

    Before you throw a tantrum about it being hidden, just remember it does this periodically so if you (the alleged power user) wants to forceably check you can click around, or go to the website. So it's there, we haven't really had a chance to see it in use since there have be no updates since 1.0PR1.

    As for an increase in exploits, well, we need to cross that bridge when we get to it. It seems like people are more concious of it now, so this should be something they are thinking about whenever code is written.

I would guess that it is highly unlikely that you will see these features encorporated into VoiceXML, and sadly CCXML is pretty much a single vendor open standard. What should be done is to add CCXML support to one of the preexisting open source VXML projects that way vendors are encouraged to adopt it as a standard. Unfortunately Oktopus is really not a viable CCXML open source product, but it is a good start.
