As someone who proofreads engineering and medical papers for a living, MS Word is unfortunately the standard format (authors insert little images of complex typography into the main text; it's as bad as it sounds). Some equation-heavy papers use LaTeX, but they account for maybe 1% of the total.
I've been proofreading engineering/medical papers for universities in Taiwan for over 7 years and this is not surprising in the least. There is almost no stigma regarding plagiarism in this region (I've done work for Malaysian, Vietnamese, Indonesian, etc. authors). When I alert an author about copy/pasted text, their reaction is one you would get if you told someone that their reference format needs to be change. "Oh, ok. I guess I'll change it.". The universities here never seriously investigate plagiarism because all the big fish at the top did it themselves to get to the top.
Those numbers for Taiwan are incorrect. Children go to government funded school from 7am until about 4pm, but then they shuffle off to various "cram" schools until 9pm (some of these schools stay open until midnight). What do they do during summer "vacation"? That's right, all day cram schools. How about weekends? Cram schools. You get the idea.
In short, that 1,050 hours is more like 3,000 hours. I'm sure other Asian countries are similar.
If you need a DNA test to tell you the difference between cheap sashimi and expensive sashimi, perhaps
you're better off ordering the cheap stuff in the first place.

Asians eat carbs with almost every meal (rice, noodles). They are thinner than us. End of story.
Well, not quite. I've been living in Taiwan for 4 years. Asians do eat rice or noodles with every meal, but the portions are much smaller. A bowl of noodles with a few chunks of beef is considered "dinner". To most Americans, it would be the soup before the steak and potatoes.
I had a conversation with a native Chinese speaker and a native Slovenian speaker. Both agreed that English was *incredibly* easy to learn, mostly because it has comparatively rules.
As someone who actually teaches English in a Chinese speaking country, I must disagree. Having had to learn English as a child, and now Chinese as an adult, the latter is easier. English just has too many idiomatic expressions, exceptions to rules, and subtleties. Some people have an easier time learning languages than others, so one anecdote about learning English is meaningless. You really don't appreciate how difficult English is until you have to teach it.
You obviously have not learned from history... as you seem doomed to repeat it.
Remember, the U.S. will allow the Chinese to "join" with us in our space ventures when they stop oppressing their own people for both political and religion reasons... and stop oppressing the free, democratic people of Taiwan by letting them have their own seat at the U.N.
It seems that YOU have not studied history enough. Read a good book on Chinese history before you open your mouth. And before telling others what to do, how about you get rid of oppresion in the US of people who hold different political and religious opinions than the gov't.
I remember seeing a show on TLC that featured a blind mechanic for a racing team. He would listen to the engine and find problems that were impossible to detect visually. Interesting stuff.
Ultimately, the solution is not to pick one party over another but to reject the concept of political party membership outright.
That sounds nice, until you realize that nothing will ever happen if 200 "individuals" try to pass a law. Everybody knows that you can't have 2 captains on a ship, so why is 200 such a good idea? Before calling for change, try to think through the consequences. I can think of a few other things that are great in theory.
In fact, the noise margin of the binary number system is consistently 50% better than the noise margin of the base-3 number system.
Consistently? From what I remember, half of something is
ALWAYS 50% more than a third of the same thing.
So much fancy language to state something so obvious. The more levels of logic you have the less room between the levels.
What exactly did you have to think about?
1. pop psych mumbo jumbo
2. naked chicks in the dance scene
3. Keanu "finishing" in bullet time
4. fight scenes
Come on, it's just Matrix 1 with a shinier wrapper.
From the article:
"The better the I/O, the better the kernel for all of us," said the programmer, who requested anonymity. "We are thrilled with what we've seen of the 2.5 development tree so far, which will find its way into the 2.6 kernel."
Don't people usually request anonymity when they say something....er, controversial. Maybe his boss doesn't like him playing with linux.
By your logic...The US has weapons of mass destruction, so if China wants to point nukes at the US, that's fine, cause China is just detering the Americans. Also, we should set up an international alliance against the US, and have UN weapons inspectors allowed to see everything the pentegon is doing. Sounds crazy? It sure is, so why do so many agree with it when it's done against Iraq. Oh yeah, Sadam eats babies.

How about not making nightmares that cause nightmares in the first place. But I'm just talking crazy.... Adam

I think you want cavalry. Calvary is where Jesus was crucified.

A computer game isn't as difficult to make as
military spec software. If the game crashes or
has backdoors or exploits, PEOPLE DON'T DIE.
Actually, if military spec software works, PEOPLE WILL DIE. People die no matter what.
I find it odd that the legislation on internet filters means "pussy" in Polish.
Sorry to ruin your prof love-in, but this idea has appeared before.
Look up "The day the Earth screamed" by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Good read.

You are of course assuming that rich males don't bang their secretaries and babysitters, thereby passing on their genes.
