  1. There ARE lanes in the sky... on The Coming Air Age · · Score: 1

The simple fact is that there ARE lanes in the air. They are defined by paths between radio navigation stations (VOR or VHF Omni-directional Ranging) or using a GPS. The pilot knows their location in relation to the airway with an indicator that tells them on which side of the airway they are on. Traffic in opposite directions is separated using altitude. Eastbound traffic (headings 001 - 179) fly at odd numbered altitudes and westbound traffic (180-360) flys at even numbered altitudes.

You missed the point. Obviously this phone is designed for use in the office environment. It isn't designed to used in the middle of grand central station. If you want that get voice dial from Sprint PCS. That will work there.

  4. not one of a kind on Handheld Dispatches From (Towards) The North Pole · · Score: 1

This system is not one of a kind, and it has been implemented since several months before the iPAQ was available commercially. The iPAQ/Iridium combination is fairly standard. In case you are wondering....yes there are iPAQs in hardened/waterproof green cases with break-resistent screens.

  5. why even bother?? on Turnitin.com - Placebo for Plagiarism or Worse? · · Score: 2, Insightful

Plagarism it not some undefined thing that is hard to understand. It is clear cut...taking someone elses words or ideas and labeling them as your own without crediting them. There is a simple rule, don't use someone else's words or ideas without giving them credit, and you haven't plagarised anything. Now there is no need to submit your paper to any website. You can't accidently plagarise someone's words. You have to willfully copy someone else's words or ideas to commit the crime. The basis for the website in the article is absurd and not even worth wasting the Slashdot community's time with.

  8. searches are necessary! on Unreasonable Searches When Going to Work? · · Score: 1

It is all about tactics. For lack of a better word, 'terrorists' prey upon the every day routines and lack of scrutiny. The only way to combat that tactic is to implement measures that give you multiple chances of finding that one thing out of the ordinary that alerts you to an attack. Searches and checkpoints give security forces that ability. How much time does a search take out of your day? Five minutes, maybe a max of ten? I think that is a small price to pay for increased security to allow you to carry out your important research. Consider the bigger picture and stop whining.

  9. Using RF on Wanted - 45 Mile Wireless Broadband? · · Score: 1

RF over a 45 mile distance will be difficult. A lot of people mentioned that having clearance in the fresnel zones would be a hardship. This is true, but the curvature of the earth is a bigger problem. You would have to have some very tall towers (probably in the 200 ft range) to overcome the loses you would get from the curvature of the earth. Also, you would have to have your transmitters pumping out a lot of power, which is more than you will get out of 802.11 transmitters.

  10. Re:10 billion fooey. on Virus Cost Estimate For 2001 Tops $10 Billion · · Score: 1

You have to look at the value lost in terms of lost productivity. While you are out cleaning the virus off of someone's workstation, that is time that the workstation is being unproductive and as a result costing the company money. The same goes for websites when they are vandalized. The time spent repairing the website is costs money in terms of the productivity lost. However, I agree with you that it is a numbers game. Remember who is working to create these numbers....more than likely someone associated in some way with the marketing department. Need I say more?

  11. getting shocked.... on A Hidden Threat To Handhelds · · Score: 2, Informative

Partly wrong....you can become an electrical conductor at any voltage if the conditions are right. Besides, it takes a combination of the right voltage pushing a high enough current to hurt or kill you. 100mA conducted through the body is enough current to kill the average person. When you get zapped by static electricity, there is a potential there of about 13kV....but there is a very small amount of current....that is way you don't get hurt.

  12. Re:Why not a bootable CD? on Why We Can't Just Get Along: The Bootloader · · Score: 1

The problem with the bootable CD idea goes along with one of the points in the article. The author says that it is statistically unlikely that someone will change the OS on their system. Meaning that most people who buy a computer want to be able to take it home, unpack it, turn it on and connect to AOL or drop a CD in the tray and have a program install itself. The vast majority of people would never even consider changing the OS on their machine. One, they don't care, and two even if they did they would be too afraid of "messing something up" to even try (have you ever seen how much CompUSA charges for their computer services??) The only way a different OS is going to break Microsoft's hold on the OS market is if an OEM completely dumps microsoft and starts shipping Linux/BeOS/Whatever as its only option....not likely to happen.
