    So here is the text...

Dotcom Scoop first reported earlier today that it appeared that file-sharing service KaZaA had been sold after the company's website was mysteriously changed early this morning and then reverted back to its original form.

The company issued the following statement this morning:

"Jan. 21, 2002 -- Sharman Networks Limited, a privately held company, has purchased certain assets of KaZaA BV, including the popular consumer site KaZaA.com, distributor of KaZaA Media Desktop software. KaZaA BV is the Netherlands-based software and products company that founded KaZaA.com. The transaction was announced by Sharman CEO Nikki Hemming.

KaZaA Media Desktop is a full-featured peer-to-peer file sharing software that allows users to search, download, organize and play media files. Included in Sharman's purchase of assets are the license for the FastTrack P2P Stack, the KaZaA.com Web site, name, and logos.

"We are thrilled at our opportunity to resume the KaZaA service and further develop the KaZaA brand,'' stated Sharman CEO Nikki Hemming. "We value the millions of users of KaZaA's software and will continue to enhance and grow our core offerings."

KaZaA BV will continue to operate its remaining assets. Terms of the deal were not disclosed."

No further information was provided about Sharman Network Services. As we reported earlier, the company appears to be based in Australia due to information contained in KaZaA's new terms of use agreement.

A search for Sharman CEO Nikki Hemming reveals that she was the CEO of Sega World, an electronic theme park in Sydney, Australia that closed in late 2000. If that is indeed the same Nikki Hemming.

I dig AMD. But I'm not a fan of their megahertz-doesn't-equal-performance marketing, because it just seems designed to mislead consumers.

How exactly does their "marketing ploy" mislead consumers, when it happens to be true? In fact, they don't just slap the number on there. They discuss it on the packaging material, on their website, and are pushing for a benchmark based standard to be used across the board. Now, if they completely obfuscated the actual clockspeed of their processor, I could see where you're coming from. But that's not the case. Instead, they're straightforward about saying "don't be a dufus!"

    1.3GHz AMD Duron Arrives

A mere two weeks after releasing the Athlon XP 2000+, AMD today announced the 1.3GHz AMD Duron processor for the "mainstream PC market." AMD says the new Duron processor is optimized for Windows XP Home and Professional OSs and supports DDR memory. It'll be priced at $118 in 1,000-unit quantities. The 1.3GHz Duron has 192KB of total on-chip cache, a 200MHz front-side bus, a superscalar floating point unit with 3DNow! Professional technology, and hardware data pre-fetch. Durons are manufactured on AMD's 0.18 micron process. I know I haven't griped about this in a while, but if AMD switched to its new "MHz doesn't equal performance" naming scheme for its higher end Athlons (where one would assume that the users probably look at benchmarks) why is it sticking with GHz for "mainstream PC" chips (where you would imagine that users are less likely to look at benchmarks)?

The objection that most American taxpayers have to massive Mass-Transport infrastructure projects is not the presence of an alternative, but rather the fact of 100% of taxpayers being forced to pay insane amounts of money for a project that will benefit roughly 5% of the state's population. For example, Minneapolis/St. Paul is currently involved in a $Billion project to build a LRT system which is roughly 5 miles long, running between the airport, mall, and an impoverished neighborhood. When the DOT comes back the same year a $Billion was just dropped on LRT and says that many upgrades to conventional roads have been tabled because of a $Billion budget shortfall, the 95% who don't get to ride the golden train get upset.
