    Sorry to agree with an AC, but it's right. I tried honestly to use the GIMP, and found its canvas-less way of laying out toolbars and images to be less than easy to work with.

    As for porting GIMP to Windows, why bother? Photoshop and Paint Shop Pro are competiting with each other enough to provide 2 great drawing programs, depending on your taste.

    The names between Windows apps and their Linux counterparts are radically different. They are as poorly named(could we just have a few more apps that have X at the beginning) as console emulators(Nosefart being the worst)

    If I was making a home gaming console, I'd try to shoot for licensing of all the classic games I could get ahold of. Imagine the fun potential of MAME on the X-Box, with over 500 games to choose from, many being totally obscure arcade titles that never really saw light of day.

    I have to agree with you there. That's one reason why I don't want to have full-time linux boxes running in my little efficiency apartment. I'd rather have it at some office where it can make as much noise as it wants.

    As for the lights? I have that same problem. With the lights off it looks like there's a bunch of woodland creatures looking at me.

    Let's see what i have to cover-up/power down when i go to bed.

    4. laptop power supply(2 lights! I just disconnect the main power cord)
    5. VCR
    6. ZIP drive; this one annoys me. mostly stays powered off and I gotta reboot to use it

    Dammit, I just want it to be absolutley dark when I sleep!

    I'm betting most of the broken links that need to be fixed are geocities pages. I've never visited a geocities page without at least 1 404 on them.

    If you want to make MNG files from scratch, use Animation Shop, which is included with Paint Shop Pro. They've supported it for a while. Beware though, the file sizes are huge, but hey, at least you did your part against UNISYS.

    I just got a set of Kodak rechargables for my DC-215(mill. edition), and I have taken a lot more than 31, and I still have battery juice.

    Just remembber though, do NOT cover up the flash with a piece of paper. You will hear a weird popping sound and a burning smell.

    i remember seeing some pre-production photos for a Dark Side Lego mindstorms kit. One of the featured items was, you guessed it, an AT-AT. Wonder how hard an AT-ST would be.

    Nonono not at all. I'm 24 and I still play with Lego(boy that Destroyer Droid's a bitch to transform).

    This is strange. I am checking my web logs, and normally my most popular page is my webcam(for obvious reasons).

    Now for the whole month I have over twice as many hits to my Lego Technic transmission page at http://british.nerp.net/lego/auto/tranny/index.htm l. I just don't get it. No outstanding referrers or anything. Hmm.

    Great, now with bulk ordering I can finally build that life-size android I've been sketching. heh.

    I am surprised. With all the hate-press Courtney Love gets, she sure can write. Just to amuse myself, I read her article, and liked it. SHe was honest and blunt like Chris Rock's stand-up routine.

    It was wordy, but not a "put you to sleep digital revolution is coming" sleep like all JonKatz articles.

    C'mon Taco, let Courntey Love take over as columnist for Slashdot instead of Katz. Just look out for Bikini Kill.

    They'll just have to come up with some sort of fuzzy-logic Bryce Lynch AI whatever to match up the altered names to their real artist, check the artists' standing with the record companies(I doubt they will go after people who pirate Soul Asylum, for instance), and sue accordingly with the MS Lawsuit Wizard.

    This reminds me what happened last week. Wanted to download RealPlayer to play some streaming video files(for some reason ANY streaming .rm video seems to make me wait with "buffering"), and i ended up downloading RealDownload instead. This is supposed to make downloads easier blah blah blah. I was presented with 30 file types, and had to uncheck each box. Nope, there was no "deselect all", but there was a "select all"(great QA work guys).

    Remember when RealPlayer used to just stream audio? Now they have to have promotions, "sign me up" opt-in mailing lists, and 20 other things. I just want to play the friggin' audio/video!

    With Windows Media PLayer? 0 ads. 0 toolbars to listen to Whitney Houston, NOTHING. MS swallowing up their techology and putting RealNetworks away would be doing me a favor.

    And how do you expect to read that when its whizzing by your screen in 80x25 text mode? What about if you have some sort of crude accessibilty options turned on to 40x25 text mode?

    Or worse yet, what if the computer speaks it out to you?

    There used to be a cofee shop around here that had Elvira's "Scared Stiff" machine(her 2nd!) that NEVER saw a minute of idle time. I saw people play the hell out of that machine, and knew almost every sound byte and easter egg to that game("a cow?!?!?"). i only got to level 4 on the stiff-o-meter tho.

    My ex-girlfriend got me into pinball in 1991, and I've been hooked ever since. We used to play some game(forgot the name) whre you have to knock a mini-pinball on the backglass up and up.

    I got hooked on T2, and looking back, that was a simplistic playing field(1 level), but hey! it had the led screen.

    Then I got into Fun House, sworn to destroy Rudie. Think my record was 12 million. Still a fun game to play.

    Never mastered Star Trek:The Next Generation.(can anybody?)

    Played Hook and left the machine with 5 credits. easy as hell. Got a free game on the first play of Demolition Man.

    My take on pinball machines? That's ALL I play when i get to an arcade. MInd you, arcades seem to be on their way out much like drive-in theaters, but the pinball machines will always be the sauce to me. The machines got a lot more fun and challenging since the advent of the LED screen.

    Mind you, the WORST pinball machine ever( from '86) was Dungeons and Dragons. Funky side drains and awful sounds.

    I noticed that Sega and Data East made the WORST pinball machines ever. Williams games are always fun to play. They being the MS of pinball? Heh

    The "agent" idea reminds me of numerous self-protection iRC scripts. There are literally thousdands of "me too" irc scripts that op/deop/kickban/etc people faster than humans can do. pretty much the human element of IRC can be taken out.

    Now let's ponder this. You ever see people riding in netsplits? I've seen all too many irc scripts interpret a ride in on a netsplit as an "attack" and HUGE chain reactions of mode changes occur between these scripts. It quickly turns to hell.

    I think it's great that my company has given me at least 4 shirts with the company logo proudly on it. That means I don't have to buy shirts for myself. now only if there were company-branded jeans, slacks, socks, boxers and shoes available. I wouldn't have to buy clothes anymore!

    Getting free company-branded clothes is like NetZero. You don't have to pay for it, but you have to put up with their ads.
