If the machines are permitted to make all their own decisions, we can't make any conjectures as to the results, because it is impossible to guess how such machines might behave. We only point out that the fate of the human race would be at the mercy of the machines.
Just because we may allow machines the ability to make thier own decisions and possible influence some of ours, doesn't mean we're headed down the food chain. For starters there will always be a resistance to any new technology, and humans consider independance an admiral, and desirable trait. For example there are many average people who will never want to, and arguably never need to, use the Internet.
While intelligent machines could improve the standard of living world-wide, we'll balance them to extract hopefully the most personal gain.
Considering Firfox still has a fairly tech-savvy userbase (who in theory patch often), it'd be interesting to see what percentage of security exploits actually happen when using to two browers in the real world.
I believe that Firefox would have a significantly lower security breach rate than IE, but further compared with Opera or Safari?
The few users that do actually hear about this will, in the majority of cases, not care.
All of them know they are stealing already. The fact that the software they are using is also stealing from others wont faze them in the slightest.
BTW the mentioning of 'a charity' in the article was cheap as almost all affiliates will be merchants. It was mentioned to draw emotion, when the reality is different. Poor form.

He's not suggesting that the OS is hard to install. I think he's not confident that linux (proabably KDE) can stand up to a quick play by the consumer, especially with staff that are not pros to guide them and answer they're questions properly.

Even though they are clearly in Linux for a buck, that is the ideal situation for retailers. IBM, Sun and the rest, should and do support us technically, Walmart and hopefully soon others by portraying linux as a viable option at the POS.

They are only allowed to block the songs that contain 100% definately copyrighted material. If they blocked the name of the track then all kinds of non-eminem files would be blocked as well and therefore it would be an illegal DOS AFAIK.

All this is promising but they still have a hurdle to overcome before they gain the 95%coverage they are after. As their service gains in popularity people will start to notice the access points and object to them for similiar reasons as mobile phone towers, looks and perceived health effects. Soon enough the complaints will roll in making getting the coverage an issue.
I will start celebrating if (not necessarily when) the service provides better value than the current Australian standard of 3 gig per month caps for $75.

Firstly, this kind of thing will very quickly make its way across all racquet/bat/glove/sword/anything sports if it's proven a worthwhile advantage. Just as quickly it will cost your average club level player the extra cost to keep up.
The Australian Football League allowed the use of gloves 7 or so years back. The AFL has been in existance over 100 years without them but that perceived advantage lead to half of the players (at least) playing the game using them. Juniors at the local clubs naturally followed suit, and the sport as a whole suffered because of fewer numbers participating due to the cost.
I love technology, but the advantages and disadvantages of somthing like this have got to looked at carefully before this should be permitted at any level.
