Ive actually seen a couple articles in msnbc that dont shed a good light on Microsoft. I was pretty suprised myself, but generally you are very correct..
IMHO Wired is a much better place to get news from, I don't know much about who they are owned by or anything, but their paper mag is great, and the online site has news updates quite a bit..
I must say though, it makes me feel a little sick that the first thing the Afghans will see when they brush the soil from the TVs will be Jerry Springer, Temptation Island and MTV...
Its probably better then watching mass death and destruction every day while hiding from the Taliban =)
Yea, it seems to me if someone really wanted some information that would be on that network, they could possibly be willing to pay millions of dollars for something.. more then enough to turn a straight and narrow military worker into a spy of sorts for the other side..
Ya, id agree, those 2 definately make the show, I think why I like drew so much is that those 2 make some good fun of him sometimes when they are doing their skits, I find it hillarious.
I think that Whose line is it anyway is probably the funnies show on television. Ive watch both versions, from England, and then the US version, and I think I like the US version better, mostly because of Drew Carey being the host.
I have listened to a little bit of this on the news, I know what its about, the state and federal governements want some money from the purchases made over the internet..
I am just wondering how they want to go about this. What if I live in England, and buy something from an online store based in California?
What happens if I live in, lets say, Oregon, I connect to a machine in England, then have that machine connect to the online store and buy something, how would they know about that. Could they look at the shipping info, and base it off of that?
Im just glad to hear they put another ban on starting the tax, I don't feel we are ready for something like that yet, as the only way I can really see them basing who gets taxed and how much, is by a shipping address or billing address. If its a shipping address, what if I am buying something as a gift to someone else..
Just to let you know I know very little about taxes, the whole system needs to be overhauled..
Well, here is an intereting tidbit of info about that..
I live in Idaho, and I work in Washington. The taxes on cigarettes in Washington is extremely high, its about four and a half bucks a pack.
In Idaho, its much lower, less then 3 bucks usually.
Well, about a year ago or so, they passed a law or something that raised the taxes on cigarettes in Washington. If you live around this area (spokane/coeurd'alene) then you'll know that a lot of people come to Idaho to buy their cigarettes. After that last tax was put in place, they had put state patrol cars at the smoke shops near the washington/idaho border (on the idaho side). Anyone with a Washington plate, they would write down the plate number, call it in to the Washington State Patrol, and the car would be pulled over, and the person would get warned/ticketed for tax evasion. It was on the front page of the paper even.
This did not last for long, maybe a week or so, now they really don't do it anymore as far as I know. It seemed to me as a way to just scare people. I guess now they just carry this little sheet of paper that they can declare what they bought in a different state, and when they do their taxes for the year, they have to pay the extra money to the state.
So ya, I would say that states have some good power over 'state tax'. Problem is, how do they enforce it on the internet?
The ps2 is backward compatable with the ps1, so you really cant say that it is a benefit of using an off the shelf cpu.
I agree with most of what you say, BUT, I still think that they would have been better off making something from the ground up. Its not like microsoft doens't have the money to do so =).
Also, you say that these cpu's are not slouches for games, I agree, we all use them to play games everyday. There are also a lot of 'stuff' that is associated with x86 that we are trying to get away from (like I said im not a hardware guru, but this is what I gather). I mean you take an x86 based processor, lets say a 733mhz chip, and put it against a similar G4 733mhz chip, who wins?
Only if Heineken had a cool top like Grolsh does then it might be better..
And btw, I have a Heineken bottle that has a stamp on it that says "For military use only". My grandfather got it when he was in the Korean War.. I think my little brother recently opened it and drank it though, probably pretty nasty
And I think it's quite clear that the Xbox was designed (hardware-wise) specifically as a gaming system.
Are you trying to tell me that a Pentium 3 chip is designed for gaming?
In my opinion, the Pentium 3 was probably a bad choice for this, the only good thing about it is the portability between pcs and xbox. The bad thing about it is that the processor is designed for a desktop pc, not a console. It seems to me that you would get much better performance by designing a processor specifically for what you are trying to do, not use off the shelf hardware.
I am not a programmer or hardware guru in any way, but I have read a lot about x86, and the drawbacks that we are facing today. I then look at the specially designed cpu's in the gamecube and ps2, and I have to wonder how good this is really going to be.
I think maybe he meant dvdrw drives, they are counting on the fact that people aren't going to pirate xbox games because a dvdrw drive is too expensive..
I think it had something to do with the power going thru the usb ports, I THINK it was juiced up you could say, to provide better support for force feedback joysticks or something like that.
It was a while ago I was reading about it though so it may have just been a fragment of info from something else I was thinking of.
Im curious to know if you can use a keyboard/mouse with this, one that is made for a pc (similar to how you can use them on ps2), or if you are going to have to buy XBOX(TM) only stuff. From what I can remember, the usb ports on the front for the controllers were a little bit different size then a standard usb port, but only someone who has one is going to be able to tell us.
I myself am going to wait for the gamecube. For only 199 bucks, its quite a bargain, and nintendo usually has very solid 1rst party games, and with the change to a cd type of format, I hope more 3rd party developers jump on board, I hear that one of the main things they tried to do when making the gamecube was to make it easy on developers when making games.
I recieved a similar letter from Adelphia. Luckily they said that the infrastructure of their cable network was not owned or ran by @home at all, and that Adelphia would change their product name to Powerlink from Powerlink@home.
Pretty much it came down to telling us of the name change, and that nothing else should change at all.
I was fairly sure that ftp.exe in windows was taken right from BSD. I remember seeing some sort of copyright from Berkeley when I typed ftp/? or something like that, but its not working now.
It is strange that when you fire up ftp in windows, it uses all unix commands You would think they would replace all the antiqutated unix commands with 'superior windows commands' like DIR and such.
Thats really not the point I was making. Slashdot forums aren't exactly the place to get information such as this, as really anything posted on here has to be taken with a grain of salt.
And yes, I do work, on my 6th and half year in the tech industry (pretty much supporting stuff, im not trying to make it sound fancy or anything). Anyway, I hope my little joke didn't go over your head, I'll try to use elementary humor next time.
I used to work for Worldcom, and they are such a good company, I retired after only 2 years of working there, and im only 25 years old! I had 3 secretaries that were more then willing to provide me with personal 'fringe benefits' as well as a full wetbar right in my office. In fact, they didn't use cubes there, everyone had an office, all 5000 employees. We all got Lamborgini's too. Just make sure you talk to Joe Smith at the front desk, give him that magic handshake, and you'll be setup.

Well thats pretty slick, I love the thing, but I don't have a mac, so it looks like im sorta out of luck for a while.
I guess if santa also wants to bring me a brand new titanium g4 powerbook then it wouldn't be too bad =). (dont forget the apple cinema display!)
Panasonic 50" Plasma Display - $7999 at Best Buy (hey only 192 bucks a month!!)
Yea it is, this same AC has posted that Steven King has died, he uses the same sentence and everything, just changes the name..
Ya, im pretty amazed at the size of it, much much smaller then the nomad.
You can boot off of the ipod?
If they aren't that expensive i think i might try to get one of these myself..
Anyone know if it has any mic inputs so you can record directly to the device and save the file as mp3/wave? Be great for concerts =)
Zeno
Yea, it seems to me if someone really wanted some information that would be on that network, they could possibly be willing to pay millions of dollars for something.. more then enough to turn a straight and narrow military worker into a spy of sorts for the other side..
Maybe im reading too many Robert Ludlam books =)
I've heard that Halo has a year contract to be only available on the Xbox(tm).
Ya, id agree, those 2 definately make the show, I think why I like drew so much is that those 2 make some good fun of him sometimes when they are doing their skits, I find it hillarious.

I got my ps2 the day it came out, not any problems with heat and dvd playback.
My brother got one about a month later, it wont even read any disks anymore, and sony wants him to pay 120 bucks to fix it..
Gotta love it!

This site is sold out of the audrey, they point you to tigerdirect.com and say to search on something from Compaq, which is a similar device I guess.
Ya I hear ya, I think i fell in a hole =( Only tech related anything around this whole area is contracted support =(
*looks for a rope to get him out of this hole*

Umm.. ya, and I can make up stuff too:
I used to work for Worldcom, and they are such a good company, I retired after only 2 years of working there, and im only 25 years old!
