  2. In other news... on UK Royalty Group Wants ISPs To Pay For Pirating Customers · · Score: 1

Insurance companies are calling for a levy on city councils to compensate for claims from thefts in cities. They are arguing that since cities provide the infrastructure where thefts happen, they should pay for it. They claim that New York has agreed to pay 50 billion dollars a year for various criminal acts being engaged in by criminals in the city.

  3. Paying customers - pay more!! on DRM vs. Unfinished Games · · Score: 1

Looks like he is suggesting that paying customers be made to pay more while restricting non paying customers from playing the game. That is the only way revenues can increase. But collect more money in small amounts rather than one large transaction.

I am not sure this will "convert" non paying customers to paying customers.

The piracy argument cannot be confused with more revenues. There are arguments for piracy (not me) that it increases the exposure to the game and actually leads to more revenues. If more of your friends are playing pirated Quake, some of you will buy it.

  4. Commercial software WITH source code on SugarCRM 6 Released, But Is It Open Source? · · Score: 3, Informative

Many commercial software developers provide their software along with the source code. But they do not qualify as "open source". If there is a restriction on forking the source code or maintaining it yourself, it is not open source.

"Open Source" Software is different from "Source Available" software.

  5. It happens everywhere on Chinese Companies Rent White Foreigners · · Score: 1

How is hiring pretty looking hostesses any different than this. I hear that some companies in the US prefer people with blonde hair and white skin to be their representatives, especially public representatives. If that isnt face what is? Sometimes event organizers "rent" pretty looking models as ushers for their events. So everyone around the world uses 'pretty faces' (depends on what you mean by pretty) to show a different "face" to the world.

  6. We are asking the same in India on China Luring Scientists Back Home · · Score: 2, Insightful

India invests a lot of money in training grad students in the prestigious IITs (premier engineering colleges in India). 50% plus students travel to US, do their MS/PhD and work in the US and become US citizens eventually. We call this "brain drain" in India. We will be glad if the "reverse brain drain" helps us regain some of the losses.

As a leader, it is the responsibility of a country like US to help everyone grow. If the US does not demonstrate leadership traits, someone else will. Leadership is not simply about more money/resources/power. It is about being a "leader" and behaving like one.

Red Hat charges money for "support" rather than "license". As a user (I am talking lay user, not a slashdot geek), that will mean 're-labeling' of software costs. Of course they will get open source software, better software etc. but they will need to pay - someone. Make that $1 Trillion in support costs rather than license costs. Net-net no reduction. And the ones on FOSS are already not paying anything.

  11. Do scientists make more money? on How To Make Science Popular Again? · · Score: 1

And today most people aspire for lots of money which means unless there are rich scientists, science will not become popular.

  14. People buy hardware not software on Why the Google Android Phone Isn't Taking Off · · Score: 1

Phone buyers buy the hardware. Computer buyers care more about software. On slashdot, users talk more about the phone's software but general users do not differentiate.
That is why buyers are not queuing up to buy "android" phones. Maybe Google should have a reference architecture and work with manufacturers to sell the Google Phone. It might work then and all the marketing dollars will go to build the "Gphone" brand.

  18. AV-Test better than VB100 and Checkmark on AV-Test Deems Windows Security Essentials "Very Good" · · Score: 1

AV-Test uses a really large sample size for testing against real viruses. Unlike VB100 or Checkmark that focus on a sample size of around 1000 to check "in-the-wild" viruses.

To be fair, in-the-wild viruses cause about 98% of the attacks and AV organizations catching them have demonstrated their capability of catching the others.

AV companies catch viruses a few hours to few days after a virus has been released. So, even the best AV company cannot save you from getting infected by that brand new virus which has been released just a few minutes ago.

When a lay user is also the administrator on a system, they can inadvertently install/click on exe files and answer yes to threatening questions about security. For a really secure OS, the user needs to be upgraded to an administrator, preferably a NetBSD admin. But then who would do the rest of the work in the world!

  19. HCL looking for a freebie on Indian CEO Says Most US Tech Grads "Unemployable" · · Score: 1

Software services companies like HCL look for specific technical skills to fill needs in specific projects, especially when hiring in the US.
Grads come with generic programming skills that needs to be honed. Comp Sci grads in India are trained to program for 4 months on an average after they graduate by companies like HCL. But the training costs about $3000 dollars for 4 months including the salary of the graduate during the period.
Grads in the US can be trained in about 30-60 days but that is still expensive when compared to what it costs back in India. It would be great if HCL could give the univ a list of technology skills they are hiring next quarter and the university does the training for free. That way HCL can lower their training costs.
Of course, as a person who believes in free as in beer software, I think HCL is trying to be cheap but then, hey I am cheap too!

    Indian Work Permit

In India, work permits, often referred to as employment visas can be issued either to skilled professionals or to people immigrating to India to fill a specific position for a named company.

Working permits in India are less defined than work permits in many other countries in that the Indian immigration structure does not present detailed requirements for obtaining one.

Work permits are a very subjective area of Indian visa services, however in order to live and work in India all candidates must secure one.
