Duh, um...I know let's port Linux to it!...duh that's brilliant..bet nobody's thought of that yet...especially not on slashdot...and then we could port FreeBSD, and OpenBSD, and of course NetBSD...duh, that'd be really cool...wow, I'd be king of the geeks...that's so far out...
That's funny...the original BASIC WAS compiled...in fact MS BASIC was one of the first interpreted BASICs which leaves most people with the impression that BASIC is ONLY an interpreted language.
Okay..so you learned C++ right out of the gate?

Do you really expect people who have never seen a computer program in their life to suddenly start programming good code in C++? I don't think so. BASIC certainly has it's place...Hell, it's what I learned on.
This is the best thang since that there DMCA thangy...
A brilliant idea (*SARCASM*), we haven't killed enough technology companies yet...let's give people yet another reason not to use the internet.
Duh, part of the reason the net's so popular is because it's free...it's been proven that the only sites that can successfully charge for content are news and porn
You make it sound like choice is bad. In fact, choice is what Linux is all about. If you don't want choice, use windows, or MacOS, or even a commercial UNIX. I personally like the idea of being able to try KDE, GNOME, WindowMaker, Blackbox, FVWM, Enlightenment, etc.
Also, contrary to popular opinion, 2.4 ain't perfect, so it's good to be able to choose 2.2 if you need it.
Somehow, I don't think the GNU folks give a rat's ass about binary compatibility. With free software, really all you need is POSIX compliance. (If you want binary compatibility out the yinyang use BSD.) Also, the HURD team can theoretically port Linux and BSD device drivers, the source code is all there. In fact, the OSKit from the University of Utah does just that. The number of users is actually less important for long term survival than the number of maintainers, which as far as I can see is the only real problem the HURD team will run into.
This sounds like it would be a *HUGE* step forward for the *NIX community as a whole. Unfortunately, it will probably fail because our community is so stubborn. If X is so great how come Apple chose to go their own way and implement Aqua? X certainly would seem more advantageous for them...just port X-Free and you've got thousands applications instantly supported on OS X...the problem is that it takes a lot of hard work to make X pretty. Look at KDE, Enlightenment, and Gnome. These projects have taken years trying to make a square round when reinventing the wheel would have been much easier.
If Linux is ever to be a player on the desktop, we will have to abandon X. X and DirectFB are not mutually exclusive and there should be a relatively painless transition. X just doesn't make sense anymore for a PC dominated world. When was the last time any of you used a dumb terminal? I've never used X on anything other than PCs and I'm sure that most of my generation can say the same.
You have to ask yourself if you would really want a plugin for IVM anyhow...
It appears to have security that is far too weak for purposes of web applets. (No sandbox.) In fact, if the above mentioned browsers DID include IVM support I would most likely disable it for security reasons.
Notice that this lovely post comes straight from an Anonymous Coward...hmm...anybody else smell the irony of that?
you might wanna try the HTML Formatted option next time...DUH!
No just the quality of the moderators
GET A LIFE!
Wow slashdot's gone downhill
MOD THIS GUY UP!!! Seriously.

Hey, it had to be asked!
Besides...they don't charge for everything on the site do they?

that's something best left to opinion
2> Will Hurd have an Xfree port soon? Will existing drivers be easily portable?
Read the article...they already have XFree working on HURD...XFree runs on OS/2, of course it will run on a POSIX system
3> What about window managers and environments. How hard would it be to bring KDE/Gnome and some window managers to hurd?
Gnome will obviously get ported...think about it...Gnome has RMS endorsement...besides window managers are generally portable across UNIXes

Crypto is like the law...it's made to be broken!
So wait...did Al Gore or Bill Gates invent the internet?
giving the boys acid and letting them jump out of windows...

In short we need a new king for a new generation.

Censorship has to stop before we are left listening to polka and bluegrass!!!
All songs are offensive in their own way, you will never please everyone.
Sorry for the ranting...it's just that when people start banning my favorite song of all time from the radio I get slightly pissed off.
As fast as the government works, this should be no inconvenience at all!!! (snicker)
Oh yes that's the timid voices of cowardly trolls, too afraid to reveal their identities! Anonymous Cowards, reveal thyselves or SHUT THE HELL UP!!!
