linux just isnt as user friendly as some other OS's....

Sure you can do all of these things (flash etc) under linux but is sure isnt as simple...Compare the flash plugin installation process of ie with any linux browser...

Windows hits the os for the masses target reasonably well, Linux hits the os for tech's reasonably well

It is moving towards being more friendly but at the moment it is just not intutative enough...When I first started using windows (95 after finally discarding my Amiga) I could install apps so much easier than I could when I started using Mandrake 7....

I hope linux carries on its path and I hope that it will become easier to use but its been my experience that is simply not there yet...

how do they force you to buy a new os?

if you want to keep using it it will work fine for you and the software you have been using will continue to work. There might be some questions about new software but hey thats evolution of computers (no body complains quake 3 doesnt run on thier DX33)

and of course you never have to buy an os there are plenty of free alternatives.

You seem to answer your own question

Which is precisely why I question the quality of the upgrade. Why would it hurt MicroSoft to release Win95 for free if 98, ME and XP are so wonderful? 98 was 95 with USB, ME was 98 with new icons, which leaves XP as the first major upgrade to the home user's version of Windows since 1995.

you realise that even though the os's werent marketed as similar to the previous (for obvisous marketing reasons) that they are infact similar to be detriment to sales....

We have a perfectly good freely downloadable os anyway - we dont want to confuse things with a free ms os...

Yes - but Apple make apples...dont think (but not 100% sure) that you can by an apple without mac os.

Microsoft dont have a monopoly on intel based hardware, so giving older OS's away for free wouldnt be good business sense...

Most (bar modern games) apps install and run fine on 95...in fact it might even be one of the 'faster' os's released by ms....

there is a difference between consoles and PC's.

A pc sits on/under a desk plugs into your monitor and is usually at a 1 person desk.

A Console however is small plugs into a tv and can be operated while sitting on the couch with a couple of mates.

Think of it as comparing a dvd player with a dvd drive - both devices are similar in function but have very obvious differences....

I guess to sum it up a console is more sociable than a computer....

I'm in a similar position... I knew when I took the position the objective was to get the site out as fast as possible to maximise the profit. The better I do this the more favourable my pay review. It would be nice to spend longer and develop more elegant methods of doing things and allow for future expansion of the site and clients business. But I knew not to expect that when I came on board... If you do not like your job, and you think you can find another, better position (there have been a lot of posts on /. about the unemployed latly) take the high road, but do it tactfully, it pays not to burn your bridges... just my 2 cents anyway....
