    Where's the situation where it isn't preferable to just walk over to the couch and use the TV and controller?

    When one of your spawn is crying that they can't play [whatever PS4 game] because the slightly-smaller-spawn is watching [some inane childrens video on Netflix] on the one TV that the PS4 is hooked up to

    Now the kid can just take the tablet to its room and play on a smaller screen

    Because who the fuck has a cellphone with the sim chip removed? Itâ(TM)s like complaining your emergency radio wonâ(TM)t work if youâ(TM)re using it to store your forks.

    Children who aren't yet old enough to have a fully-functional cellphone, but for their parents it was cheaper just to give them their old cellphone sans-SIM when they upgraded, than it was to buy them a tablet, perhaps?

    The added benefit of the above is that your kid can still make emergency calls to 911, which they wouldn't be able to do with a tablet that doesn't have a GPRS/LTE radio in it

    The kid did the equivalent of look on a bulletin board in an arena/community center, and instead of tunnel-vision to the flyer he was told he could look at, looked 2 inches to the left.
    He then asked someone else (his computer) to continue moving two inches to the left until there was no more 'bulletin board' to look at.
    There was neither fraud nor lack of right, as it was posted on a public board.

    That's why prosecutors dropped the case, as they knew it was the server-owner's (read: government's) fault, not the kid's.

    Though, in this initial experiment, it was limited to pulses of a "mere" 0.3 PW or 300,000 gigawatts.

    Does this mean they can travel through time approximately 250,000 times faster than Doc Brown could? Or is the conversion from gigawatts to jiggawatts nonlinear?

    In this day and age, you'd have to be stupid or insane to do what you do.

    Or have an older vehicle that only has a CD player and no USB/Line-in (perhaps it's even integrated into the other functions of the car, so can't easily/cheaply be replaced)

    You don't need to have your entire collection always available to you
    Many players (especially those that support FLAC) support user-changeable MicroSD cards


    The FIIO X5 supports 2x128GB, so you can have a quarter terabyte of music instantly available to you, and keep the other 1.75TB in your pocket/smoke pack/whatever

    I don't have a smartphone. Are there places in the world where people pay for smartphones without any sort of data plan whatsoever?

    Smartphones still can do a lot with just WiFi, and there are a lot of places with "free" wifi in generic metropolitan areas.
    I know quite a few people with little-to-no data plan; i.e. many with no data-plan at all, and a significant number of people with very little (a few hundred MB)
    Even the "small" data plans are used only for apps like Maps or Mass-Transit info (stuff that you may need while not near wifi); for all of their browsing and such while out of the house, they'll stop in at a Starbucks or something and do it there over wifi.

    A planetary system is a set of gravitationally bound non-stellar objects in orbit around a star or star system.

    Those limits were imposed by modifications to the copyright act 2 years ago. What was there excuse before then?

    Most US companies (particularly the major networks) have distribution deals in Canada (i.e. Canadian broadcasters pay the networks to air the US content, but with their own Canadian ads)
    If US networks started airing their shows online and allowed Canadians to watch on their .com (instead of through their cable-company; with US Networks getting the ad $$$ and not Rogers/Bell), then those companies in Canada would sue the US networks for loss of revenue and breach of contract.

    Such a machine to read brain signals would cost a lot more than this kid's prototype.
    Training the machine to read each individual's brain signals and teaching the affected individual (who can't talk to you easily, remember) would take a lot more time than teaching the affected individual morse code

    Finally, fMRI machines (non-invasive way of reading the brain signals) are really expensive, and brain surgery to implant electrodes to read the signals directly is both incredibly expensive and incredibly dangerous

    This kid plugged a specific microphone into an arduino, wrote some basic software, all for $80 in parts, and came up with a solution that is quick to train and (with even a small-run mass production) would be very inexpensive to build, that would give these people at least the possibility of communication with the outside world without having to have the bankroll of a well respected and successful astrophysics career.

    I think it was more intended as a way of narrowing the field in an investigation

    If you have a gunshot in an area with 1,000 people, 50 of whom wear bracelets (ankle or wrist), but 2 were out of the area (according to GPS), then 48 are "top-suspect"

    If, of those 48, 40 of them don't have any signature even remotely gunshot-related, they can be dropped to a lower priority suspect list, and now the cops only have to find 8, instead of 40.

    The easiest way to find the blue ball with yellow polka-dots in a pit full of blue balls with red polka-dots is not to search for the yellow, but to throw out the red, and whatever's left will (should) be yellow.
