  3. Volcanco - heat capacity on Alton Brown Answers, At Last · · Score: 2, Insightful

The primary reason it works is that lava has high temperature, but low heat capacity. Steam et. al. would not help if the lava was at 2000 degrees and high heat capacity. Lava walkers (walking across glowing coals) use very specific types of rock, for precisely this reason, their feet would be burnt to a crisp if you substituted a different type of rock. A more common example is aluminum foil in the oven. You can unwrap a baked potato with bare hands, but it is too hot to simply hold the unwrapped potato, even though they were both at 400 degrees.

  4. Re:Volcano question - heat capacity on Alton Brown Answers, At Last · · Score: 1

From chemistry, you need to know an important difference between temperature and heat capacity. If lava has a low heat capacity, it can have a high temperature but still not provide a high overall temperature. I believe that this is why/how people can walk across glowing hot lava rocks - they have a high temperture but low heat capacity. Another example, an aluminum foil placed in an oven compared to a cast iron frying pan. Both may come out of the over at 400 degrees, but you can grab the foil with a bare hand (you can grab the frying pan with a bare hand as well, if you want to get burned).

The point taken by Verizon et. al. is right on the mark, the RIAA is not allowing due process; but they are protecting their shareholders, not intentionally "fighting the good fight". The problem is, that now you make good computer generated graphics, but they still stink, because the story is terrible.... Personally, that is why I liked LOTR, but hated AOTC. 22. Free speech vs. Commercial speech on Two New Spam Laws in Japan · · Score: 1

The law in the US distinguishes between different types of speech, and places limits on different types of speech.

Free speech does not allow you to yell "Fire" in a crowded place. If you try it, and you are prosecuted, you are going to loose if you attempt to claim that your actions were legal speech.

Generally, telemarketers, door to door solicitors, and spam are trying to sell you something - this is known as "commercial" speech, and is much more regulated than other sorts of speech on topics like religion or politics. This is why, ultimately, religious and political groups, appeal and usually win, restrictions on non-commercial speech - telemarketers don't. In Colorado, they just started a statewide no-call list. All telephone solicitors are required to purchase the list and NOT call the numbers on the list, fines of up to $10,000 per offense are possible. The big loophole however, is that charitable, political, and established business relationships are excluded. The limits on charitable and politcal groups were added, knowing that they would be struck out on appeal if they had been included.

In your door-to-door example, I believe that you have it backwards - the law was struck down because the religious group had a right to express their beliefs. If the law had been challenged by a salesman, it might/probably would have been different. Commercial speech is not afforded the same rights as protected forms of speech.
