The Union only has power with its Positions. If they let people take those positions then they would have no more power over bargaining for those positions.
Take for example Beer.
I am Qualified to buy Beer. The brewery would like me to have beer(They like selling beer). The bar has a contract with the brewery and have so many beers. If the Bar decided to give me the choice to pay for the beer then it would have no money, becuase no one will pay for something they can get for free. The brewery and Myself still want me to have the beer, though the bar that is under contract with selling the beer will not.
The Unions are under contract with the Businesses for various positions, if they gave them away they wouldn't have any positions to bargain for. Hence the problem. As I said before you are not FORCED into being in a Union. No one is going to kill you for not being in the Union.
Unions let the works decide they would have no power becuase they couldn't setup a contract for any positions. It isn't that you are fired, it is you are let go becuase you dont meet the requirements of a predefined contract.
It seems like a bad contract if it prevents qualified workers from working jobs.
If the Union did let them it would destory the value/power of the Union. States that have laws preventing Unions from "forcing" people into Unions have really Weak Unions and hence no benefits from Unions. Also, I will remind you that Unions dont force people to join. People always have the choice to not work the position. You dont have to have a job.
It is a vaild suggestion to prevent Unions from giving to politcal causes, but wouldn't this single out Unions from a lot of other groups. Why should Unions be special in this way.
That's fine. Why not let them work there and they can work out their benefits on their own? Without the union? I think it is silly to mandate union "benefits" to non-union members anyway.
They are in contract with the employer. Why would the Union let people work in positions under its contract without being paid for its services (or having them be apart of the Union).
It has nothing to do with the job, but there are a lot of things you deal with that have nothing to do with the qualifications of the job. Such as getting a pay check, or getting vacation time.
union also spends a huge amount of money on political causes that you might not agree with.
If the union didn't provide large amounts of money to political causes would unions be ok? Businesses provide large amount of money to political causes all the time and you dont seem to mention that.
Your missing the point, currently the Game Industry is not working and something needs to change. You can't have people work 80 hours a week for extend periods of time and expect them to produce a good product(time after time). It just wont work. One of the suggestions is to Unionize, with out Unionization what motivations does the Industry have to prevent this horrible situation. (clearly poor product hasn't prevented them in the past).
I Clearly dont see how people can be happy with the fact the games they played required people to destory there lifes. We are talking about GAMES here, they are not required for life. 50 Million dollars and destoring a few developers lives just to be able to waste 3 hours of your life in some virtual world. Think of the things you can do with 50 Million dollars. I bet that money could feed a lot of hungry people in Africa. You might say it is the developers fault for making games that cost 50 Million dollars. I dont blame them one bit, why?, becuase I dont think most of them want to be dealing with numbers so big. I think it is the Market that is pushing them into that.
Think about that next time you play a game or watch a movie.
It is stolen money for those who do not want these services
If they dont want the services they can find a job somewhere else. The Union and the Employer are in Contract. If they do want the job then they need to pay for the services of Union.
Why force anyone at all into an organization that has nothing to do with your ability to do the job or not? It makes just as much sense to force workers to join the Southern Baptist Church or the ACLU.
The Southern Baptist Church or ACLU doesn't bargain for you wage, benefits, work hours.
It is not stolen money, they are paying for the services associated with the Union. Is it fair for them to gain extra wages and benifits with out being in the Union. In certain cases there can't be a choice to be part of the Union becuase you do end up gaining so much for being part of the Union. (If you want a choice, move to Florida, they have "Right to work" laws that prevent you from being forced to join Unions).
I had a friend that was forced to be in a Union for a part-time summer temp job. The real crime wasn't that fact he had to pay in most of wages to the Union, but the fact the Union didn't do anything to help him with issues related to his boss and how he was being paid. I agree there should be limitations on who is forced into the Union, but then again you should have to pay for the services of being represented by the Union.
Unions are interested in keeping the company in businesss just as much as the company. If there was no company, there would be no Union. Unions are interested in paying people a living wage and working on getting benefits that allow the employee to focus on work. A Happy employee is a productive(with High Quality) employee, and Unions provide a means for employees to discuss what will make the employees happy. Unions in the past few years have been really mismanged, and the concept of what Unions are have been destoryed.
Now what you said about making games on your own is just not going to happen. It can take a team of 50 people more then a few years just to make one game. Do you have enough money to spend a few years without pay and can you find a large group of people willing to do same thing. This doesn't even include the cost of Tools (Maya, PS dev kits, computers, etc).
I've done my share of working as a tech on random old hardware in a position where I could not easily refuse. I would not force that upon any person working in a already bad enough position (I am guessing children can be hard on computers). Some of my horror stories cannot be easily described but you should consider a 486 with Windows 3.11 for Workgroups (and a random no name nic of the same age) was the least of my worries.
I am not donating anything unless I know the person actually has a use for it, and knows how to use it/fix it.
The operating system can access more then 2 GBs ram, but the applications cannot easily do the same. Personally I haven't tried to go over 2 GBs, but I have seen programs (helping friends), that have run into the 2GB limit.
Another trick I failed to mention is the fact you can now do tricks with mapping files into virtual ram(since the address space is so big), and doing random access on them just as ram. Since the address space is so large, you can put whatever you want into the virtual memory and let the operating system deal with wether or not it should be placed in ram. I just wonder how much of a speed up this could mean for loading files, and how much easier it would be to program without all those damn file loaders.
Fews apps can gain much from using over 2 gigs of memory currently, I know there are special cases, but really I dont think it is a issue (yet).
Most apps dont gain from the extra processing of using 64-bit from 32 bit math. When are you really maxing out an INT, or needing to use a double?
So what do you really gain from having a 64bit processor?
Extra Registers are key to the performance gains with 64 bit with most applications. They should speed up everything by having so many extra places to place variables.
The problem being that in order to use extra registers you need to recompile the application. Hopefully all those developers are out there doing that.
I've already thrown out all my 486, Cryix(s) and Pentiums. I'm about ready to throw out a BH6 with Celeron 366 (Runs at 550 stable), not to mention I have another ageing p3 700mhz. There is really nothing you can do with them, and they are not worth the time to sell on Ebay. If I am going to spend the time setting up a computer it is atleast going to be a slower athlon with DDR ram. There is no reason for me to waste my time with anything slower.
I am willing to accept suggestions.
TV resolution doesn't effect quality that much considering the current state of graphics. Much can be still be done even at normal TV resolutions. Sure HD is going to help quality, but resolution is only part of the graphics rendering problem, there are a lot of things (like lighting, bumpmapping, reflection) that developers are just now jumping into.
The P3 is going to offer a lot more processing power in order to add new AI, new Physics, new levels of graphic detail, bigger worlds, better sound, more realistic sound. With more memory, faster processors, and better development tools(Cell Programming). Developers will hopefully not need to spend so much time tweaky every single last bit of performance out of the rather complicated PS2 system. If you really play games, the $300-$500 dollars is going to be completely worth it.
And Yes, I am waiting for the p3 to have good surround sound for in game audio.
If you watched the news lately you would know that your lack of a right of a feeding tube is the most dangerous thing in America. The President even flew back a week early to sign the bill into law to secure you right, Not to mention Congress having a late session. You need to get your head screwed on straight, and look at the important things in life and stop listening to Science. Science is too busy messing with something called FACTS.
I have seen Aliens of the Deep, and I know that they focus mainly on deep sea underwater ecosystem. They clearly did dodge around the facts related to creation of such ecosystems on Earth or other Planets (or Even Moons in the film). They also seemed to make everything sound like speculation. For me it seemed just like a lot of pretty pictures, with little information.
It makes if wonder if Disney attempted to remake a converstial film without all the BAD stuff in it. The bad stuff being actual science.
I think this is the problem, that it is so easy to cause so much harm to the US It infrastructure. I am not saying that Islamic terrorist would have more of an ablity to cause harm, but they definately would have more of an interest and drive to do something really harmful then just some kid messing around with a Script, or writing a simple Virus.
If Terrorist can learn how to fly a plane, I am forsure they can go to Topcoder.com and learn how to program enough to be able to write worm/virii/attack. If they wait for the right time and place they could really do a lot damage.
Clearly you dont know anything about the your own taxes, or education system. The United States Federal government provides very little of the operating income for the public schools. Almost all of the income for Education comes from local property taxes. So saying bush raises federal education funding 33% says little about the total health of the education system, becuase Federal funding only makes up a small percentage. Currently in my area fuding is dropping, many schools are closing down or reducing staff. Luckily number of students are also dropping.
The fact the State and Local goverments have so much control over education makes the No Child Left Behind Act look stupid. Why would a Rebulican (Smaller Goverment, right?) make new Laws to deal with something that they normally wouldn't deal with?(To make you feel nice while they screw over a entire generation).
I know no one will read this.. But who cares.
I went to every AI session at GDC I could go to. I came to one conculsion which is Game AI is just as weak as it has been the past few years. No one is really working on a new type of AI, they have just finding ways to manage complex state based AI. I hate to tell you this, but AI in games is going to continue to be pretty bad for the next few years.
There have already been Viruses that go out and use the Networks mail server by looking the address in outlook (most of the time you can just guess). They even go to the point where they get a username and password. Though blocking the port would help, it is not the final solution.

When I think of small computer, I think of the Small Form Factor PC developed by Shuttle. I do not think about Mac Mini, or the G4 Cube. The only reason there is a Mac Mini is becuase PC makers showed there was a market for such computers, if they didn't, I feel Apple would just keep on making Imacs.
