there is a stereotype of the American geek as small, weak, beaten up, no girlfriend etc, but I've wondered if this is accurate.
Alot of times it's true. It's the rare case which it isn't. I was/am a geek and am built like a linebacker and played football. I hung out w/ the jocks and the geeks. The biggest problem is that geeks tend to spend most of their time learning/getting better at the intellectual(or whetever) side of things. And believe it or not I think this is the problem. I found that I got lucky and was ok because I worked at the stuff I was bad at, and not what I was good at. I hit the football field, hit the weight room, got to be sociable and know the other side. As a result I was respected by them. The typical geek (and i may get flamed for this but oh well) is somewhat scared/timid, and will retreat to that which they know best and get better at it, and shrink from the rest of the world. In order to change the stereo type, we need to fit in and get better at what we're not good at...
This was done by a friend of mine, so I take no credit. First off there are 14 of us in a cubicle farm in a large office room. There is one set of lights (about 6-7 in a row). the night before April Fools, he came in and switched all of the lights around. Now, when you work in a room, you get to know where your light switch is. So, for a few days we all thought we were insane. After everyone got used to their "new" light location, he switched hem back. I thought it was a great prank, because it was basically harmless, but it did make you question your sanity for a few days...
I work with people that work for NASA. They work 30 minutes a day and take 3 hour lunch breaks...
I work for NASA myself, and I don't know who you work with, but the people who belong at NASA put in long hours. I put in 10 hour days on a regular basis. Admittedly I don't work at one of the major centers, but I find your generalization to be rather unfair to us folks who care. Sure there are poeple who do what you say, but I'd argue that's not the norm. Maybe it is for the pencil pushers, but the engineers and scientists I know work their asses off.
Now I find out those slackers are making more than me? WTF!!!!
I feel the same way about the buisness degree friends I had. They work less, aren't as smart, and now make more. Kinda makes you wonder, who really was smarter?

...Mutually Assured Destruction. Microsoft isn't going to try to bludgeon IBM with a patent suit, because they know IBM has just as many silly patents to bludgeon them back with.
That's true for the big boys, but it still leaves the problem, that a smaller/newer company which doesn't have the patent portfolio will get sued out of existence if they try to do something using some frivolous patent one of the big boys have.
Say for instance using XML as the basis for your word processor?
Personally I prefer a good side kick. It leaves you with space to hop out of the way, and if done right will get you several items and some spare change

What a total joke. If schools cannot teach reading and algebra, "teaching computers" (whatever that means) is pointless.
Damn right. when I went through high school my use of computers was about nil. In the last few years of HS I had access to one, but before that, I had to type out every paper of a type-writer.
Now let me tell you something. If you want to teach a kid good english and spelling, make them work on a typewriter. After about the 5th time you make a mistake near the end, I guaran-damn-tee you will be very careful about how you write something and your spelling.
The computer is a tool, a means to an end, and my personal feeling is that for 90% of the material covered in HS, a computer is entirely unnecessary. But no one seeems to understand this anymore. Hell, most of the kids wouldn't know how to even find a decent source of information in a library if they had to.
Wake up people, computers do not solve your problems all by themselves.
yeah, I know, I can be a bit freakish in the morning when coffee is scarce...
The problem w/ slashdot is most of the times the serious useful comments don't even get noticed... at least that's what I find. I get modded WAY higher when I post in jest (or the occasional troll) than those times when I discuss the serious topic.
not that I do more of one or the other, but that's just what I find.
I feel so....conflicted.
They say IE is bad, which is good, but they're big brother which is bad. My brain 'splode now, thank you.
