So wouldn't it be possible to block chinese ip ranges to stop spam?
Yes. And a lot of people do just that (as well as blocking Koria, South America, etc).
Unfortunately, if you or any of your clients has relationship with somebody in Asia, this is not viable.
Remember how a lot of stuff is manufactured there? If one of your customers is, say, an importer, you can't block it (short of telling him to take is business elsewhere).
did yum specifically have some 'upgrade to FC2' option?
None that I know. I changed "/etc/yum.conf" so it would point to the new repository and erased/var/cache/yum. Then did a "yum check-updates" and then "yum upgrade" and rebooted.
Worked on the first try. The only bump was an error message in the X windows because of the change to the new x server. Nothing crippling, just a message on startup that didn't prevent me from using the system right away.
A quick search on bugzilla did away with the message.
Shoot, they nearly asked for everything but the birth certificates of FSF members.
They are essentially asking for *anything* that might be related to the GPL, the companies that use it, people that write under it, enforcement, etc, including written communications, memo, documentation, etc.
I've never been thrilled seeing SlashDot and other sites like the EFF accepting PayPal
"Me too!" *ducks*
Seriously, I used to use Paypal for auctions and donation to certain sites, but then, one day they decided they didn't like my country, so I'm now unable to use them. Now I cannot subscribe to Slashdot nor patronize other sites that take only Paypal.
I realize that it's very convenient for webmasters and Paypal probably offer ease of use or somesuch, but for potential customers from unsuported countries, we are SOL.
Nor do they seem to have plans to support my country any time soon.
They obviously feel they are doing the world a favor by offering sexual deficiency drugs, pain-killers of questionable legality and mortgages for those with bad credit.
They probably don't. They are simply making (or trying to make) a buck out of people ingenuity. I doubt they are so self deluded as to believe in a weight loss method that involves neither drugs, surgery, diet or exercise (must be magic, I guess), or similar products.
My favorite is the one where they offer to erase my bad credit history. Will they give me a new identity as well? How about a criminal record? Can they make those go away too?

So I still wonder how accepted an open sourced codec will be in the short run, since 95% of desktop users run Windows, without requiring someone to manually install a codec
Depends on what you mean by "manually install".
Windows Media Player tries to download the codec if the media is in a format it doesn't recognize, but divx (last time I tried) is not recognized nor downloaded automatically.
So people simply go to the divx site, download the installer and execute it. All that is required for xvid to be used by windows users is for someone to make an installer for it (and there already is one).
That said, I haven't seen many xvid videos around in the newsgroups or on p2p networks.
In order for the scammer to claim that he was the victim of a fraud, he'd end up confessing to the original scam
Actually, he doesn't need to confess anything. Unless there's evidence that he's behind the fake escrow site, he could claim good intentions and pass himself as another victim of said site.
Of course, his claims of previous business with said escrow site would probably bring him down.
I just made them a root-user which was typically nick-root
That would be the reason why Nick was fired after the last time the system went down...... but seriously... if the have root access, can't they create themselves additional root accounts, tamper with system logs, etc?
it's great not having to worry about signing up for some service and forgetting to cancel after the end of the month then having them hit the card again and again
I'm not sure it is an entirely good idea... forgetting to cancel subscriptions, that is.
I also use "disposable" credit card numbers that my bank provide me, but always cancel anything I'm not interested in renewing. The reason for this is that I don't want it coming back in the future to bite me.
Suppose that 10 years from now I'm applying for a loan or for credit or somesuch and it turns out I'm listed as delinquent on some institution for a bunch of $10.00 websites subscriptions.
3. Assuming that our population merely doubles, and we make spaceships that will take just half of the people away, each capable of 10,000 people (which is quite a reasonably high estimate) - we will need 500,000 ships. Thats an awful lot of resources that will be needed, both energy and material.
Of course, we don't have to save *everyone*. We just need to preserve a small kernel whence humankind will rise again once danger is past.
In this "Noah's Ark", an appropiate cross-section of humans, plus animals/plants will live for years bidding their time.
Such plan exists already. It was tought out during the cold war for fear of nuking by the superpowers.
Oh, really... well according to this article, we only have four more years before the end of the world! (Never mind the fact that the article is part of the entertainment section of Yahoo).
Hell, yeah! I have found, however that if I wait six months, I can get today's $50+ games for about $19 - $25 in Amazon or other online retailers, 100% legal.
I was told that I would be considered if I agreed to quit college and to never attempt to get a degree.

A hiring practice that asks college students to quit school just seems like a bad practice to me.
At first I was like "WTF?!" when I read your post. But it does make sense. They were looking for someone who could dedicate themselves full time to work and they believed that someone still going thru college wasn't going to be able to, so the only way they would have considered (not even accepted yet) you was if you agreed to quit college.
I believe you made the right choice. You can always apply with them later on.
Anybody can tell what it's like working for Microsoft? I'm just curious about the "environment" not anything that would violate any NDA.
There are exceptions, of course, as in everything.
My dad is 64 and I got him a computer last year (his very first one). He loves it. He likes to experiment so much, that I resorted to giving him a restricted account just in case.
He enrolled in a couple of courses and now does photo editing (got started almost by himself taking pictures of the grandkids) and does most of his paperwork on the computer.
There is a middle ground--like female characters that are competent without only being sex objects. It really isn't such an impossible thing to wish for.
How about April Ryan?. I'll admit that this game was the first time I identified myself with a female character in any medium (games, books, movies, etc).

Be warned, tho, that my system had no exotic hardware at all, so everything was working right away. YMMV.

When being an anti-zealot, just make sure the facts on your side.
I'm not 100% sure but I believe he was being funny (or trying to be).
I always assumed it was pretty much common knowledge that Windows install procedures overwrite the MBR and does away with any other bootloader.
That said, I upgraded with "yum" to FC2, and didn't notice anything strange with grub, but then again, I don't dual boot in that machine.
If I had to keep a permanent archive of my customers' e-mail, spam would drive us into bankruptcy.

Doesn't it have a "None of the Above" choice?
You can always not show up, tho it probably will be counted as apathy instead of protest.
EA should license "Pretty Fly" by Offspring as Opening Theme.
Seriously, add some of the game mechanics of Vice City plus character developement and I'm there!
The title has nothing to do this. It's about white collar workers in general.
Oddly, it also includes funeral directors and embalmers.

Symbiosis can be defined as mutual parasitism.
Sorry to nitpick, but, don't you mean dual commensalism? Parasitism implies that one party benefits while the other is adversely affected.
Myself, I'll just buy some more hard drives and make a RAID
What about archival and historical purposes? If tomorrow your system is compromised, what will you roll back to?
I like to keep historical backups because I always (at least twice a month) have to restore a file somebody deleted by mistake.
