I'd switch if OSx ran on an x86. But it doesn't, and I don't like dealing with the PPC architecture... It's costly, and difficult to get hardware for (since the BIOS code on such things as PCI cards, needs to be in PPC opcode format, not x86 opcode format).
How is hardware not currently open? Do you mean open hardware specs once the hardware is created and sold? This will not fly, since competition would destroy any chance at the company making profits... (China not abiding by copyright laws 'n all)...
Better specs on how to write drivers for the hardware sounds like a great idea, but not full hardware specs in the public domain for new hardware, that just won't work...
hmm, a proxy server in hiding, eh? What will they think of next?
Seriously though, could the technology used to view the content, not be used by the very entity trying to prevent it's use to detect and block sites using the technology?
For that reason I'll continue using my NVIDIA card until it burns out (which will be as soon as the fan stops spinning), and then I'll go and buy their latest and greatest. At least their drivers are generously provided and updated, sometimes on a weekly basis.
Umm... granted that Nvidia drivers rock... but doesn't it kinda scare you that they have new drivers every week??? Just a little?
...until John Carmack responds with his take on the card.
I'm serious. How many of us base our video card purchases on the recommendations he makes? He knows the cards in detail, knows what features they support and how well, and he sure as hell knows how well they'll perform with the next id game.
So John, is this card worthy?
What? John said he will port Doom 3 to XBox... Yet he says the 9700 is his new card of choice... I see something horribly wrong here... Either he has gone crazy, or (more likely) is accepting bribes from microsoft. In which case, I wouldn't put it past him to accept bribes from nvidia in the future, which would make his recommendations not hold much water.
There are games for WINCE, why the hell aren't there embedded games being developed for Linux? Take a look at http://infosync.no, they have news on the latest apps for the embedded world, including games... NOTHING for Linux... what gives?
I hate to say it, but a PC is a lot more flexible than a consumer DVD player... I'd go with the PC on this one... I doubt you will find too many DVD players that will allow you to skip the warnings... heck, even on the PC, you have to get hacked software to do it...
check out mcdonalds as well (or any other fast food place). There is no such thing as a small.. They start at medium and go all the way up to super size.
Has anyone else noticed that there is no longer a 'small' pizza at pizzahut? They start at medium... but the size has become smaller, and now they have extralarge... which is as large as their old 'large' size...
Well, at least here in Canada... Don't know about the US franchise...
For NBC, ABC and fox generate revenue (and a hell of a lot of it) based on viewers... in your analogy, linux should be generating lots of revenue since a lot of people have it installed.
The problem is that Microsoft gets money upfront for their OS sales, while tv stations generate money based on views (or 'use' if we push the analogy a bit.)
Now if we could get advertisers to buy 30 second commercial breaks in your linux productivity software and/or games, then perhaps we could get those revenues up a bit... But I don't want commercials poping up while I work, it's bad enough while I'm surfing the web...
At some point in time Nvidia was making one tenth of a percent of 3DFx... I don't see Nvidia doing too badly right now...
Just because Microsoft is making a lot of money, doesn't mean that this will always be true. Their business plan is fundamentally flawed... who in their right mind will rent software? And who in their right mind actually agrees with Microsoft's EULA? Right now they make way more money than Linux, but if Linux wasn't a product line that was profitable, then companies like IBM and Corel would not have put any energy into it...

Microsoft was told about this flaw when it was first discovered 7 years ago. They still haven't fixed it.
In other news, microsoft is sueing the cnet for making a flaw public news. They claim they needed more time to fix it, 7 years just isn't enough time to fix the bug and test the patch...
With the price of WinXP, even though I do like it, it's way too prohibitive to run throughout an entire business.
The functionality is pretty close to that of WinXP, so why pay $300 a copy? Sure it requires a bit more elbow grease to get configured just right, but it works great, and with distro's like Mandrake, it's almost easier than Windows to install...

Forget USB, I want a KVM that doesn't make my video cards output look like crap on my LCD... Why don't the manufacturers care about video quality at 1600x1200??? Just because I want to run multiple machines from one keyboard / LCD, doesn't mean that I'm running at VGA resolutions...
I was going to suggest that it be water cooled instead of air cooled (via a vent), but the chances of the water becomming contaminated with salt is just too much of a risk in my books... Anyone care to guess which is safer? Water cooled or air cooled in a salt-air filled environment?
Ummm, not that I ever used a MAC, but they have had a neat little bomb pop-up when something went bad. And I didn't see people trying to crash the system just to see the bomb animation.
What will make it happen is if there is money to be made by doing it. Otherwise no amount of lobbying and whining will make it happen.
The old saying, show me the money... that's what'll work.
And as for developing the moon? The first question that comes to mind is will the telco's have a flat rate for evening and weekend calls? Cuz I sure as hell ain't payin' $9.95 a minute to talk to my relatives on the moon, and I don't wanna sign up MCI MOON friends and family either...
But the average user doesn't have a clue as to what TweakUI is or even how to hide an icon (believe it or not). This move on MS's not only promotes competition, but it promotes their right to use integrated DHTML/Media components in their apps and third party apps.
Oh, I believe that the average user may not know how to use tweak UI. But how does that promote competition?
I know exactly what registry settings tweak UI changes when it does its thing. So would it not make sense for those companies (or individuals) who wish to compete to do the same thing that tweak UI does, in their application, or during their applications installation?
Businesses could have done this long ago (back in the ol' 98 days), so I fail to see how this promotes competition.
