  1. How long before soldiers with "HS" appear? on Scientific Research Encountering More Restrictions · · Score: 3, Insightful

I mean, it's only a matter of time before our version of Hitler's 'SS' show up here...with 'HS' (Homeland Security) on their lapels. Think it can't happen? I'll bet that the citizens of Germany in the 1930's thought that too. We have unchecked paranoia in this country..and that's very dangerous, especially when the Government is using it to control its citizens.

  2. Now..watch the MPAA, RIAA and Congress GUT this! on More Details About HDTV Pact · · Score: 2

Think this is a done deal? Think again. It's Congress who controls everything..and they're firmly in the back pocket of the MPAA..who (by the way) reported another record year at the box office (2002 was up over 12% from 2001's record year!). Hmmm...I guess that piracy is ruining the industry, huh? That's why they only earned over 9 BILLION last year!

One year? Two years? Certainly not more then that! This is another law like the seat belt law. They slide it in under the voter's nose by saying: "It's only 15 bucks and we won't enforce it unless you get stopped for something else" Well, guess what? Here in CA that lasted about 3 years. Now it's 35 bucks and they CAN pull you over just for not wearing a set belt! This is how Govt. works. Crack the door open an inch for them and the next thing you know there IS no door!

"Unfortunately, we have responsibilities to our shareholders and our industry colleagues that make action on Bhopal impossible. And being clear about this has been a very big step." This Parker guy is truly evil. He has no conflict whatsoever about what he's doing . He even admits it within his comments. "Many others" might be outraged that Dow is responsible for the deaths and suffering of thousands and thousands of people, but not Mr. Parker! The fact then Dow is (then) able to use the DMCA to cut off discussion of their nightmarish deeds gives the perfect example of why this evil law needs to be overturned.... NOW!!!

  7. Get your heads out of the ground people! on India's Bargain Supercomputer · · Score: 4, Insightful

This perfectly illustrates how bad things have gotten technology wise in the U.S. People stick their heads in the sand and say over and over like a mantra: "The U.S. leads the world in technology". Well, bucko, it hasn't been so for quite a while!....AND let me clue you into something: Unless the education system and the corporate structures change here in the U.S. of A, it's gonna get worse. Much worse. Right now, Americans have one of the worst education systems in the world. Even Canada, who we like to put down as being scrawny, kicks our ass in terms of the numbers of literate people coming out of schools today. The same is true in most European countries and Japan, and yes even in places like India. Add to this the corporate attitude here that the next quarter's 'guidance' is all the matters, and you have the recipe for failure. And failure is what's happening. Look at the examples. The U.S. developed the Internet, yet who has more computers per capita and a better infrascructure? South Korea. What country has had computers and the net in all their schools for years? Canada. Yet here we pat each other on the back because we might have half the schools wired by 2005. We're pathetic. Another big problem here is the politics here. We truly believe that we're the world's Police Department, so we spend large fortunes on military hardware instead of food and health care and education for our kids. All the Patriot missles and bombs in the world won't help us in the future. Our future is our children and we'd better well start worrying about feeding, clothing, keeping them healthy and educating them well then making more bombs.

Fact is, he just got too cocky...but you notice that it took Bush a long time and a lot of hot water before he distanced himself from Lotto. Besides, daddy Bush is running the country, with help from old buddy: "dickie boy" Cheney.

This means if it coast $80,000 for one of these diversions and there's one a day, then for these 10,000 flights it cost 8 bucks a flight. This is hardly a major expense for the airlines; we're talking pocket change here.

After all, if they didn't sell food to pirates and criminals, they'd starve to death! OH..and arresting the food managers will have an unexpected bonus...we'll starve terrorists to death at the same time! Does this sound ridiculous? Seems to me that it's exactly what's going on! 17. They call this VALUE! on Phish to Sell Downloads of Concerts · · Score: 2

They call this value. Phish is using a marketing philosophy that literally goes back to the beginning of time: Treat your customers with respect and they'll contine to be your customers. See, despite what Hilary Rosen would have you believe, music fans WANT to support musicians. See, people make music for the following reasons (in order): 1. Because they love to. 2. Because they love others to enjoy their music. and finally, 3 To make a living. This is why there's so many garage bands; most of them are happy to make a few bucks playing a wedding, and they have real jobs during the week....like writing code for example. Phish realizes this and says to their fans: for short money we'll give you honest VALUE. Putting it simply, they treat their fans (customers) with respect. Also, consider that most of the 10 bucks you pay goes straight to Phish. Everybody wins...well almost everybody. The music INDUSTRY doesn't win. But remember, they don't make music all they do is distribute it. Their motivation is ONLY #3: to make money. Also, they don't respect their customers. In fact, they publically call their customers THIEVES. Is it no wonder that nobody likes them back?

LPFM was adopted by the FCC in 1999 and looked to completely change the radio landscape, which by then was dominated by a few companies. What happened? Those companies along with the NAB (National Association of Broadcasters) lobbied Congress, who responded with: (get this) "The Radio Preservation Act of 2001". This Act, in the interest of "preserving radio" essentially KILLED 90% of the LPFM's that could have been. It ordered the FCC to neuter LPFM to virtually nothing. If you don't think that Congress wouldn't do this to HDTV, think again. The MPAA and RIAA have OUR lawmakers in their back pockets!
