I work in TV. TV broadcasters frequently SUE some companies to force them to put their over the air signals over wires so anyone that's connected to those wires can see their picture. In fact,in the USA there's laws REQUIRING the owners of the wires to do it. The wires are called cable TV and the laws are called MUST CARRY. Now..it seems to me that the broadcasters want it both ways. They want to have total control over what's done with their over the air signal. They want to be able to force companies to carry their signals when it benefits THEM and yet force other companies to NOT carry their signals when it benefits THEM! This isn't fair, nor is it right, nor is it moral. Now, I know what many will say..that the cable companies don't modify the signals at all.. BULL! Many cable systems re-modulate over the air TV signals onto other channels and digital cable systems digitize the TV stations' signal. How is this any different then converting their signals to TCP/IP? It isn't. Period. Yet one is legal and the other isn't. This law is wrong. Pure and simple.

  8. EXACTLY! Look at voting laws in the '60's! on DMCA Invoked Against Garage Door Openers · · Score: 1

In the 1960's, many states passed laws that basically banned black people from voting. Many fought and even died protesting and fighting to overturn these BAD laws! Following some people's logic here, we all should have passively just obeyed those laws. I'm sure that Rosa Parks should have been flogged for deciding to sit in front of the bus too, right? Look, laws are passed by people, not gods. Since people are not gods, they can be motivated by - how can I put this - less them ethical principles (These are called LOBBYISTS for the unitiated). A democracy needs, no rather DEMANDS that it's citizens keep its lawmakers honest, BUT THIS IS NOT HAPPENING!. Apathy by the voters is the problem, and it's caused by the lawmakers themselves! They employ psychologists, press agents, publicists, ad agencies and other 'spin meisters' to keep the voters in line (and out of the ballot box). That way their re-election is assured, and the ability for their pockets to be 'greased' as well. Until the people speak at the ballot box (and based on the pathetically small turnouts these days it's not likely to happen) things will not change, they'll just continue getting worse.

  10. Where do they get it? They're BORROWING it! on Internet Taxation May Be Imminent · · Score: 5, Insightful

and when the govt. borrows, that puts them in competition with me for borrowing that money. If I want to buy a house or car, and the govt. wants to buy guns and airplanes to use in Iraq or North Korea, we're both borrowers. If there's only so much money available that means that according to supply and demand, the COST for borrowing that money goes up. In other words, we both pay a higher interest rate. This means that the govt. has to either borrow more money or raise taxes to make the payments (something like 18-20% of the federal budget goes just to pay the INTEREST on the loans the U.S. already has (AKA the deficit)). It means that my monthly mortgage payments go up (if I can still afford to buy, that is). It also means that I have a larger mortgage deduction which means that I pay less income tax which forces the federal govt. to borrow more $$ to pay for next year's guns and airplanes. See how it's interrelated? It isn't an easy problem that has an easy solution. The only way to really help the deficit is for the federal govt. to SPEND LESS MONEY.

Nor can Hilary Rosen, or Jack Valenti or any of those pinhead types. See, they probably have never heard 99.9% of the music they represent, nor seen 99.9 % of the movies. They're a perfect example of the cancer that's killing innovation (and with it, the economy) in the U.S. Today.

    Here's an even better example:

    E-Books:
My wife loves E-books, they're cheap and she can buy and download them online (read: Impulse buy for instant gratification). What does drive her crazy though is that she can't print most of them. She has to be tied to a computer to read them. So, she winds up buying a mix of books or goes to the library.
Enter Elcomsoft...a Russian company that can fix this...which will make my wife happy so she'll buy even MORE e-books. Another thing that Elcomsoft's product can do is open up an entire NEW MARKET..the blind book market. See, the millions of blind people in the world can't USE
E-books, but with Elcomsoft's program these books can be read on a standard text reader that many of these blind people use. Instead of JUMPING FOR JOY at this innovative product that can result in MILLIONS MORE E-books being sold, the industry sues it out of existance. Now, explain to me how THAT made any sense? Like I'm a six year old.

If we had am AMCA in force, we'd all still be driving Model T's, with AM radios in them because every time someone proposed an imrovement, the AMCA would be brought out to stop it.

  22. For now, telco owns the "last mile"..... on Customer-owned Networks: ZapMail & Telecoms · · Score: 5, Interesting

For now, someone (telco, cable company, etc.) owns the 'last mile' of the circuit. My ISP tells me that about 2/3 of my monthly DSL bill goes direct to the ILEC (telco). They get 1/3 to fill the line with Internet. That means that they get 17 bucks a month out of the 50 and the telco gets 34 just for providing the last mile. To add insult to injury, to get ADSL I must also have an analog telephone line, (at 20 bucks a month) which means that the telco actually gets paid TWICE for the last mile.

It seems to me that the telco's are committing highway robbery. They're getting over 50 bucks a month for providing a single copper pair about five blocks. Cable's pricing is no better, and all the cable companies are capping upload limits which limits your ability to use VOIP (the reason is clear here too; cable wants to charge you for THEIR OWN VOIP).

Seems to me that a community could make a small fortune by running fiber and charging even half what the telco's and cable companies charge for that last mile.

Finally, I have Vonage VOIP service. Had it for over a year now and I love it. I use it with DSL.
My wife talks to her mother over 10 hours a week. I call all my friends and my kids constantly. The bill is always the same: 39.99 plus tax. Also, their international calls sound better then AT&T and you can't beat calling most of Europe for 5 cents a minute. Plus it's great having a 617 (downtown Boston) incoming phone number that is a local call for all my friends there, yet rings at my condo in Los Angeles.

  25. You've struck a nerve here... on Discovering New Music? · · Score: 2

I live in Los Angeles, home of the record business...and music on the radio here here is pathetic! I like alternative and AAA (adult album alternative) and neither are played here. We have KROQ (AKA Hype radio) but that's about it. There's a bunch of hip hop and top 40 stations, a couple of classic rock stations, one country station and the rest is Spanish. I find it pathetic that I have to go to websites of stations in other parts of the country to find the titles of music that otherwise I might not have even heard of! Then I have to break the law by downloading the stuff so I can sample it. THEN if I find something I like and want to buy, it's likely that I won't find it at a local record store. If the RIAA wants to know why music sales are down, just look at me. They've gone out of their way to alienate me as a buyer! Hilary Rosen would do more of a service to her industry if she figured out how to court the 25-54 demographic (you know..the baby boomers who represent the largest single group of people in the U.S. right now - and the ones with most of the $$ too!), instead of working her panties into a froth about p2p.
