Try to understand (what I believe) he is trying to say. The news media is NOT about news any more, it's entertainment. Have you seen the movie Network? THIS is where the news media is going. Though it's not as extreme as that movie (yet?) it is driven by revenue and revenue is driven by entertainment value. Even CNN has had a facelift in the past few weeks...just look at the "New" Connie Chung show!
Personally, I see it this way...if a company wants to provide entertainment, that's fine....just don't (attempt to) pass it off as hard news. I believe that the big news orginizations do just that....pass off fluff as news, then whine when someone calls them on it. After all, they have "tradition"...RIGHT?
I used to work for a TV station and something that a friend who worked in an ENG (mobile news) van said is most approriate here: "You're only as good as your last live shot". In other words: SCREW TRADITION....you should be judged on what you're putting out now..as opposed to the good stuff you did then....
Also...consider this: If the public didn't tune in to this crap, they wouldn't be broadcasting it.
But the security patch trashed a friend of Mine's computer. Internet Explorer 6 began crashing every 30 seconds until I told him how to use system restore to restore his computer to the point before he installed the patch. Now it's fine again....
I had hoped to see them play this summer....I do hope that the remaining two stick together though...
Godspeed, John Entwistle.
You, Elvis, John Lennon, George Harrison and Roy Orbison will make up one hell of a band up there.....
The FBI is not in the business of protecting citizens any more. They haven't been for years. Want proof? Look at what happened in Arizona last summer. An FBI agent there thought it was a bit strange that Arabs were paying cash to take 757/767 flying lessons but only were interested in learning to fly the plane once it was in the air.
In other words, they didn't need to learn how to take off and land. His supervisors not only weren't interested, they moved him (and many other agents) to an arson case involving luxury homes on the outskirts of Phoenix.
WHY was the FBI involved in what was clearly a local police matter? Because $$$ was involved. Same reason here.
When you view a videotape of DVD there's always this "FBI warning" at the beginning warning of copyright infringement. Apparently the FBI has read too many of these as they truly believe that their only job now is to protect the money!
It's the Government de-regulating all these companies that's the problem! These assholes feel like there's NO regulations now...so they can be as greedy as they want to be..and the hell with the 17,000 who are about to suffer because of their massive greed by losing their jobs.
That would be the law that they pawned off on us about 10 years ago by saying: "This is for YOU...besides, we'll only cite someone $15.00 for not wearing their seatbelt if we've pulled them over for another infraction". Based upon these safeguards, the voters in California approved a seatbelt law...
WELL GUESS WHAT??
Seems a couple of years ago, the CA legislature changed the law...without telling or involving the voters. Now they CAN pull you over JUST for not wearing your seatbelt..and the fine is now more then doubled too...
This is how government works...they get the citizens to allow the door to be cracked open...next thing you know the door has been removed from its hinges!
Look at the DMCA and the 2600 case. The lawmakers and judges here are just as clueless....

The communicator license is code free and allows voice/data/code operation on any ham band over
50 Mhz. This includes 6 meters (50-54 Mhz) During a good sunspot cycle, you can talk thousands of miles on six. It also includes 2 meters, which is filled with repeaters and digipeaters (packet repeaters), 3/4 meters (same), 1.2 Ghz and even 2 Ghz (want a high powered 802.11 b?).
Also, many repeaters work crossband, and the FCC allows licensees with this class of license to use repeaters that crossband into the 10 meter band (Big time distance here!).
Radio Shack even sells a study guide for this license (along with quite a few radios).
I've worked in radio and the music industry for over thirty years. Today I'm embarrassed to admit it. This is yet another exapmle of the big fish swallowing up the little ones. The broadcast industry DOES NOT HAVE to pay these rates for over the air treansmission. All they pay is ASCAP and BMI fees, which are a percentage of their gross billing. Noncommercials pay a flat rate of about $1500-$2000 per year. Also, these fees go to the composers....NOT the RIAA as the new fees will. This fee does not benefit the musician one single bit...all it does is fatten the coffers if the 'big five' record companies.
The irony is that this fee is likely to result in less music purchased, and less music broken into the marketplace...again hurting the smaller, independent companies and artists NOT the RIAA and it's ilk!
Finally, here's the total arrogance of the RIAA for you:
Comment of Cary Sherman, President, Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) On Librarian's Decision On Internet Radio Royalty Rates June 20, 2002"The import of this decision is that artists and record labels will subsidize the webcasting businesses of multi-billion dollar companies like Yahoo, AOL, RealNetworks and Viacom. The rate, which cannot be squared with the decision of the arbitration panel, simply does not reflect the fair market value of the music as promised by the law. This decision will certainly reinforce the steadfast opposition of copyright owners to compulsory licensing."
These assholes STILL aren't happy!!!
They've trashed Internet broadcasting and they STILL want more!
I don't know about you, but I've purchased my LAST CD from the 'big five' record companies!
I suggest that you do the same...
"Pepole who are willing to give up their freedoms for security and/or convenience deserve neither".
I truly wonder what the people who started our country would do today if they saw what we have become...
Probably they would have stayed with England.....
It works by using a huge capacitor bank to create an EMP pulse inside a cavity. You open up a door and put in your medium (tape, hard drive, etc.) close the door and push the button. The EMP produced erases the item to the highest security level the Govt has. Needless to say, these devices are quite expensive and the US Govt. is their largest customer.
no two record/erase heads are in exact alignment with those on other machines therefore, it's almost impossible to completely erase an analog tape by recording over it unless you're using the same machine it was recorded on . Some small part of that oxide still has some tiny part of the original recording. For example, In the early 70's I had an important full track mono tape that someone had recorded over in quarter track stereo.
By changing the height of the playback head on my quarter track machine, I was able to find an area on the tape that hadn't been erased. Sure it didn't sound too good, but what I wanted was the content more then the fidelity. Of course, when I was done I then had to re-align the head to make it compatible with the rest of the world.
This is what Vonage gives their subs....I've had it for about 3 months and the quality is indistinguishable from a normal phone...

Never take a counter offer...99.9% of the time you'll get burned.
That said, I actually took one once...but I liked and trusted my boss, he had given me fair raises (without me asking) throughout my three years there...and the new job would have involved an hour's commute each way from my home (as opposed to 15 minutes).
A year later they transferred my boss, and the counter offer was the last raise I ever got there (I worked there for two more years)...even though during that time my responsibilities doubled (more $$ = more work?).
SEE? It doesn't work!
Back in January, I got recruited for a new job. In the year there at my old one, they had doubled my responsibility and workload, with no increase in salary ("it's not in the budget"). I liked my old boss and gave him a month's notice (we were in the middle of a major construction project). I was thanked by them refusing to pay me my accrued vacation! The guy they hired to replace me (at a $20 K raise; they couldn't find anyone who would work for them at my salary...and ain't it amazing that more $$ suddenly "appeared in the budget" all by itself?) has another 50% more work then I had...he's been there two months and is ready to quit.

This is what copyright SHOULD be about for CD's...but is Congress and the courts have their way, it'll disappear forever.
