  2. This has been available in Tucson for years on Cable Without Cables · · Score: 1

It's called People's Choice there, though it (was) a 36 channel analog service that used ITFS and MDS channels in the 2500 MHZ range. One by one, the channels were being removed to be used by Sprint Broadband Direct, a high speed wireless Internet service. This stopped late last year, when Sprint discontinued allowing new customers to sign up for Broadband Direct (though existing subs still have the service). To my knowlege, People's Choice still exists with about 20 or so channels, though I have no idea how many subscribe to its service. It's my understanding that 10 or more digital channels can exist in the space of one analog channel, so this means that if people's Choice went digital then 200 channels wouldn't be out of the question....

Ms. Rosen really needs to get a clue. Steal one, buy one, do something Hilary! At this point your presence HURTS your cause! Hilary, you personally represent everything EVIL about the music industry. I now re-post an open letter I wrote the other day: Hilary: I live in Los Angeles, having been transplanted from Boston. Radio here purely SUCKS...there's the usual Britney Spears stuff on five stations, a couple of old rock stations and most of the rest is spanish. To keep my sanity, I frequent the websites of stations I used to listen to in Boston (to be specific: wbos.com and wxrv.com). I look over their playlists, download many of the songs and listen. If I hear an artist I like, I buy their CD. I've probably bought a dozen or more CD's so far this year due to the ability to preview the songs off the 'net. These tunes are ones I'd NEVER HEAR on the radio here in LA!Hilary, I buy CD's BECAUSE I can hear them on the net! Are you listening Hilary? Let me repeat in case you missed: I buy music because I have the ability to download songs and listen to them from off the 'net. If I didn't have that ability I would have bought quite a few LESS CD's then I have! Why? because I wouldn't have KNOWN about the artists! I CAN'T LISTEN to them on LA radio because they don't PLAY them on LA radio! Now, I know that you claim that sales are down because of downloading. I have another reason why sales might be down: Your product sucks! I'm in the 25-54 prime money earning/spending demographic you ache to serve. Why then aren't you serving ME? I HATE whiney girls like Mary J. Blige. I HATE guy groups like n'sync! Yet, this and classic rock are all I hear on the radio in the second biggest city in the country! If I were you, I'd be kneeling down and THANKING GOD that people like me have the ability to preview music from an alternative source like the Internet. Instead, you bitch and whine about it while trying to sue every site out of existance. It doesn't make sense, Hilary. I'll admit that some that download music from the Internet don't buy the CD. Let me say to you that a good percentage of these people might not have bought the CD anyway. So, what do you lose by exposing the music to them? You lose nothing....In fact, you might well GAIN by this. How? Some of them might play the songs to their friends and THEY might buy the CD! Hilary, I'm in the radio business. There's a saying in this business that goes: The only bad press is no press at all. It seems to me, Hilary that this applies to the music business as well. In other words, the more a song gets out there (ie: is heard, by whatever means), the better off the music business is. I only wish you and your industry would get a clue, Hilary. I've worked in business for over 30 years Hilary. When I was 15, I worked in an ice cream parlor. On the back of the bathroom door there was a poster of a lion with a caption that read: "In our business, the customer is king". It's too bad that the music business considers it's customers to be criminals, Hilary.

  23. Don't get me started! on I STILL Want My HDTV · · Score: 1

First off, the only people who want HDTV are the receiver manufacturers and a few TV broadcasters. I used to work in TV for a major company and network and let me assure you, all the networks are looking forward to is the multiple 'standard' pictures they will be able to transmit on the digital channel. Second of all, the FCC BLEW IT with HDTV. How? They had a chance to AGAIN fix all the problems with TV channel allocations (the first time was when color was adopted), expanding the FM radio band, having an FM (as opposed to the current AM) modulation scheme, and having a robust, ghost free system that didn't need an outdoor antenna, a preamp & a mile of coax to work. They fixed NONE of this! The HDTV system adopted in this country is 8-VSB. What is this? Yet another AM modulated quadrature system, just like the one now used for color (and with all it's problems too!). Have any of you ever watched TV in England? It's FM modulated and PAL..and for the past quarter century has been 'near HDTV' quality. Guess what? The HDTV adopted by the REST of the world is COFDM. The F stands for FM. Why did they do this? Because FM transmission is superior to AM! I was at the NAB convention a few years ago where both 8-VSB and COFDM were being shown in different booths. The 8-VSB TV had an outdoor antenna and the signal was cabled into the TV. It had to be for it to work well. The COFDM one had a Radio Shack bow tie antenna atop the set. People were moving the antenna while watching the picture and you could turn it almost 90 degrees before the picture degraded. Remember, this was INSIDE the Vegas Convention center! In the seventies, Europe forced broadcasters to move to UHF to broadcast in color. They shut down the last VHF black and white TV transmitter in the early eighties. The U.S. was supposed to do the same with HDTV. Guess what? The 'core spectrum' used for HDTV starts at channel 2! Channels 5 and 6 (right below the U.S. FM band) were supposed to be reserved for the eventual expansion of the FM band. They would have increased the FM band by over 50%. Guess what? The FCC is allocating HDTV stations on channels 5 and 6. Why did all this happen? Because the Government allowed it to! They let the BROADCASTERS choose what they want to do as opposed to doing what's best for the CONSUMERS! Let me assure all of you, all the broadcasters care about is themselves. They could care about the rest of us! There's an old saying: "If you don't learn from your former mistakes then you're destined to repeat them". Problem is, the government never learns anything. Until they do, fiascos like HDTV will happen over and over and over!

  24. To my knowlege... on Do You Like Your Job? · · Score: 1

The only tax the employer is required to pay is the matching FICA tax, which is about 7% of wages. The employee gets stuck with the rest of them. Of course, many employers also offer fringe benefits such as health insurance, etc. But as I said, this is dropping at an alarming rate. The company I work for (an NYSE stock company) not only has doubled the number of facilities I'm responsible for (thus forcing me to work over 60 hours a week with no increase in salary), they also reduced the number of holidays by two this year (down to 7), reduced their contribution to my health insurance, forced me to pay for my own disability insurance, and reduced company paid life insurance from two times salary to one. The net result is that I now have almost 200 bucks more per month in deductions. So, I'm working more days per year and more hours per day in 2002 for about $2000 LESS take home pay then I made in 2001! My friend, this ain't progress... It's greed. Pure and simple.

  25. Right now, employees are considered liabilities... on Do You Like Your Job? · · Score: 1

There has been a paradigm shift that has taken place the past few years. Most companies now consider employees liabilities instead of assets. Automation has replaced many jobs. Many companies simply do with fewer employees by making the ones left work harder and longer and having them do multiple jobs. People are commodities now. What's really amazing is that companies demand loyalty from their employees, but it's seldom returned by them. The irony is that most employees are now against unions...yet it was unions that got many employees a decent living wage and better working conditions..and now both are dropping at an alarming rate.
