  1. The RIAA is cutting off their nose...... on Webcasting and the DMCA · · Score: 1

...to spite their face. Most commercially successful records are first played by college stations. Also, many niche genres get their start on college radio! Those stations, mostly independent and with no commercial axe to grind benefit the record companies much more then I think they truly realize. To bite the hand that feeds you is pure stupidity! But then again when I see the arrogance of Hilary Rosen and her ilk I'm not surprised at all.

  3. I work in the radio business... on Satellite Radio: Tune In or Turn Off? · · Score: 1

Satellite radio has endless possibilities. Already the customer base exists just in trucks and rentals to make it a success. I look at it this way.... TV is available for free. A certain number of people have antennas and watch free TV. Next there's broadcast basic cable which is cheap (around 10 bucks a month). For this you get perfect local TV and usually a community channel or two. A certain number of people get this. Then there's basic cable, which has satellite channels in addition to over the air and costs 35 bucks or so. A certain number of people sign up for this (this is the most popular cable choice by the way). Then there's basic satellite TV which has no local stations (usually), offset by more satellite networks for generally the same price as basic cable. Some people opt for this option. Next there's Digital cable. THEN there's 1001 pay TV options (HBO, TMC, Showtime, etc.). Finally there's pay per view which offers even more choices. Where am I going with all of this you ask? Simple. The same business model that's been applied to TV can work just as well for radio. XM and Sirus simply are trying it. It'll eventually wind up with just as many choices as one has for TV. For example, though I'd not pay 5 bucks a month to hear an uncensored Howard Strern show, I'll bet that other people happily would. Or some people would happily pay for a station programming music and news from their homeland. Others might be willing to pay for a radio station that plays just heavy metal or beautiful music or classical. Get the picture? (pun intended)

Also, his examples were right on point...especially the one about Novell.

Frankly, the same lessons could/should be learned by Linux.....a GUI (that's easy for the masses to use) is absolutely ESSENTIAL for Linux to be anything other then a niche OS!

  7. See? what I said the other day (and only got a 1) on DOJ Already Monitoring Cable Internet Traffic · · Score: 1

The govt. will do whatever they want. Period. Laws and Constitution/Bill of rights be damned! In the past few years (and yes, Clinton is guilty of starting this) the govt. has become less for the people and more against the people. This 'them vs us' attitude of elected officials towards the very people who voted them into office is troubling. In the past few months I've faxed both my senators and congressman in Washington and told them that their recent votes do not represent my view, the view of one who voted for them and whose interests they're supposed to represent. One of the three sent me a boilerplate response, the other two...nothing. These people are more concerned with feathering their own nests then any of us. It's going to take a major shift in voters' attitudes to change this and it's not likely based on the fact that the majority of voters simply don't vote any more. The ones who do vote usually stumble into the booth and vote for the incumbent. In other words: We have found the enemy and it is us!

The irony isn't lost on me....that Russia is becoming more free while at the same time the USA is looking more and more like a police state.
All this to do about homeland security is a bunch of crap! The way I see it, the terrorism was done by no more then 100 - 500 or so people in total.
Is it right for our govt. to then take away the rights of 250 million people? Remember there's over three billion people in the world. 500 people represents .000000017 of this total.

Why wasn't this so obvious before? Daddy Bush is pulling the strings behind the scenes. Look at the appointments G.W. has made..every one one of his daddy's cronies from Cheney on down! Not a single one of them under 60 either...doesn't this seem strange for a 'young' president? Add to this the fact that Daddy Bush used to head the CIA, and the administration's terrorist policy becomes crystal clear. It's DADDY BUSH'S policy we're seeing here.

These law enforcement republican zealots are using the worst thing to ever happen to the United States to further erode the freedoms that we hold dear. They wave the flag, and Congress says "yup yup yup" and passes things that they've been rejecting for years as major invasions of our privacy. Want to know the really scary thing? Sen. Leahy of Vermont is now speaking up on how: "all our liberies have been taken away"... Uhm excuse me Senator but DIDN'T YOU VOTE FOR THIS BILL??? That's the scary part...these clowns (obviously) vote for things they have no clue about...then they say: "oops" once they realize that their constituents are pissed at them for doing so. Maybe we need to make a new movie: "Mr. Moron goes to Washington"!

  15. This whole argument is simple math... on BMG Backs Down Over Copy-Protected CD · · Score: 1

When I buy a CD I pay for 100% of the music. When a record company deliberately puts errors on the CD so my player is in error concealment when I'm playing a pristine CD, they are robbing me of my $$ and MY MUSIC! Unlike error correction, error concealment TAKES AWAY DATA (read: MUSIC) THAT CAN NOT BE RECOVERED!! Now, let's say that I get a scratch on my (formerly pristine) CD. NOW there are NEW errors in addition to the ones PUT THERE by the record company. NOW my CD won't play at all...but a CD without THEIR (added) errors would. Therefore, the math is this: I pay 18 bucks for a CD and get about half of the data that's supposed to be on said CD. Also, I'm getting a CD that isn't nearly as tolerant of scratches as the older ones. Also, I'm getting a CD whose songs I can't put on my Rio...or play at my computer..or on the DVD player in my living room...I can only play it on the stereo in the den... Finally, I'm getting a CD that just might blow up the amp and/or speakers of said stereo in my den.... In other (simpler) words, I'm being RIPPED OFF!

It shows how truly clueless so many of us can be...software designed for children being trashed by adults.

  22. Correct. on RIAA, Music Unions Agree On Payments For Digital Play · · Score: 1

The one who owns the song's publishing rights owns the song. ASCAP, BMI and SESAC collect the performance royalties (primarly from Radio stations, TV stations, Broadway shows, circuses, etc. etc. and distributes them directly to the rights holder (minus a processing fee of course). Obviously, the RIAA wants their 'cut' (not being happy with the just a cut of each record sold).

  23. The irony of all of this is... on RIAA, Music Unions Agree On Payments For Digital Play · · Score: 4, Interesting

That the artists already have an orginization called The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP). Unlike that one, this 'new' one has partial RIAA control. The final irony is that the BBC used a graphic for WorldClassRock.com, a web site that I set the streaming up for (15 different streams)and is now down to a single mono 20k stream (in other words is practically defunct).

  24. Re:Why only digital play? on RIAA, Music Unions Agree On Payments For Digital Play · · Score: 3, Interesting
